Stray supports gamepads on PC, and its listed minimum operating system is Windows 10, so Windows 11 is not identified as an unsupported platform. If your controller works in Windows or another game but not in Stray, start with the game’s Steam Input setting: test it both on and off, because the right choice depends on the controller and setup. These steps focus on the Steam edition; other launchers do not use Steam’s per-game controller override.
Work through the fixes in order. First check whether Windows receives the controller’s inputs; that separates a connection problem from a Steam or game configuration problem.
- Test the controller in Windows with
joy.cpl. - Change Stray’s per-game Steam Input setting and test both modes.
- Restart Steam and reconnect the controller.
- Temporarily remove extra devices and remapping software.
- Use the controller’s PC/XInput mode and a standard layout.
- Check firmware, Windows, Bluetooth, and device drivers.
1. Check whether Windows detects the controller
Press Windows + R, enter joy.cpl, and press Enter. Select the controller, choose Properties, then open the Test tab. Press buttons and move the sticks to see whether Windows registers them. Microsoft also documents searching Windows for “USB game controllers” to reach controller settings; wording can vary by Windows 11 build. See Microsoft’s Windows controller guide.
- Not listed: troubleshoot the cable, USB port, Bluetooth pairing, receiver, driver, or controller before changing Steam settings.
- Listed and responding: Windows is probably receiving input; continue to the Steam-specific checks.
- Listed but unresponsive: check battery charge and controller mode, then try a different cable or connection. A listed device does not prove that its buttons are sending usable input.
For USB, connect directly to the PC rather than through a hub, try another port, and test a known data-capable cable; some cables charge without carrying data. For Bluetooth, charge the controller, remove and pair it again in Settings > Bluetooth & devices, and make sure it is not reconnecting to a console, phone, or another nearby device. 2. Test both Steam Input settings for Stray
Steam can translate or remap a controller before the game receives its input. That helps some setups and interferes with others, so neither “always enable” nor “always disable” is a reliable rule.
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Stray and choose Properties.
- Open Controller and find the per-game Steam Input override. The exact wording can vary between Steam client versions.
- Choose one setting—Disable Steam Input, Enable Steam Input, or Use default settings—then close and relaunch the game to test it.
- If it fails, exit the game and try a different setting. Change only one thing per test.
Xbox controllers
Start with Disable Steam Input or Use default settings, then try Enable Steam Input if there is still no input. Xbox controllers generally have a straightforward XInput-compatible path, so an extra remapping layer may not be needed.
PlayStation controllers
Start with Enable Steam Input for the Steam edition. If input is missing or duplicated, test Disable Steam Input. If you try DS4Windows, use it as the one translation layer rather than running it alongside Steam Input by default.
Reports in a Stray controller discussion describe disabling Steam Input fixing one gamepad setup; another community discussion describes success with Steam Input and an official layout. These are individual user reports, not a universal developer fix. If a setting seems not to take effect, fully restart Steam before judging it.

3. Restart Steam and reconnect in a clean order
A full restart can clear a stale connection or input selection more effectively than returning to the game’s main menu. Steam recommends restarting the client and isolating controllers when troubleshooting unresponsive or unusual input in its controller support guide.
- Exit Stray.
- In Steam, choose Steam > Exit so the client closes fully.
- Turn off or disconnect the controller.
- Reconnect it by USB or pair it through Bluetooth, then start Steam.
- Wait for Steam to detect the controller and launch Stray.
If the game appears to have selected keyboard and mouse instead, try the lower-confidence workaround of launching Stray first and connecting the controller afterward. A user describes that approach in a Stray technical discussion; treat it as a fallback, not the normal startup sequence.
4. Remove input conflicts and duplicate devices
Several physical controllers or software-created virtual controllers can confuse device selection or produce duplicate commands. Disconnect extra gamepads, steering wheels, fight sticks, HOTAS devices, and other input hardware temporarily. Close remappers and overlays for the test, including DS4Windows, reWASD, controller emulators, and third-party game overlays.
Steam’s controller troubleshooting guidance lists potential conflicts including XInput emulators, Razer Synapse, screen-capture software, MSI Afterburner, ASUS AI Suite, and ZoneAlarm. Close only what you can safely exit, then restart Steam and test with one controller connected.

For PlayStation pads, avoid running native input, Steam Input, DS4Windows, and another remapper together without a specific reason. The DS4Windows Steam troubleshooting documentation explains that Steam may ignore a physical DualShock or DualSense while DS4Windows is running as part of preventing double input. If presses register twice or inputs behave erratically, close the extra translation layers and test again.
5. Select the controller’s PC/XInput mode and a standard layout
Some third-party controllers can switch among XInput, DirectInput, Switch, Android, or legacy modes. Check the controller’s manual for a PC or XInput mode, switch before launching Steam, then reconnect the controller. Steam explains that games can treat XInput and DirectInput devices differently in its multiple-controller support notes.
Begin with the official gamepad layout or a simple standard mapping rather than a community layout. For a Logitech, 8BitDo, or generic controller, confirm that its selected mode is intended for Windows/PC before adding custom mappings.
- No input: the game is not receiving usable controls; continue isolating the device and input path.
- Xbox prompts on a PlayStation controller: often a sign that Steam Input or another layer is presenting an Xbox-compatible controller, not necessarily a fault.
- Double input: suspect simultaneous physical and virtual devices or multiple remappers.
- Only some controls work: check the selected mode and layout.
Do not assume that ordinary DualSense input means Stray supports its advanced Windows features. A Stray community discussion about DualSense does not establish support for specialized haptics or adaptive triggers on Windows.

6. Update firmware and relevant Windows drivers
Updates are worth checking after the connection and Steam configuration tests, especially if the controller fails in Windows as well as the game. Avoid unofficial driver-download sites or broad driver reinstalls when Windows already registers the controller correctly.
Xbox controller firmware
Connect the controller by USB and use the official Xbox Accessories app to check its settings and available firmware. Microsoft describes the app in its Windows controller guide; Steam also documents an Xbox controller firmware update path using the app in its support instructions.
Windows and Bluetooth
- Install pending Windows updates.
- For persistent Bluetooth issues, check for Bluetooth and chipset drivers from your PC or motherboard manufacturer.
- Remove the controller under Settings > Bluetooth & devices, then pair it again.
- Test USB to distinguish a wireless problem from a game or input-layer problem. If built-in Bluetooth remains unreliable, try the controller’s supported wireless receiver or a different adapter.
Controller-specific checks
Xbox
Test the controller’s native XInput-compatible path before adding software translation. If it is detected but still fails in Stray, run the per-game Steam Input test in both directions, and check firmware with Xbox Accessories.
DualShock 4 and DualSense
For the Steam edition, begin with Steam Input enabled. If that does not work, test it disabled; DS4Windows is another option when the game needs an Xbox-compatible virtual controller, particularly outside Steam. Choose one translation route at a time. Xbox button prompts can appear when a PlayStation pad is translated to XInput.

Generic, Logitech, and 8BitDo controllers
Check the manual for the Windows/PC or XInput mode and test over USB if possible. Get the standard gamepad layout working before trying community mappings.
If none of the fixes work
If the controller works in joy.cpl and other games but still fails only in Stray, the problem is more likely to involve the game’s Steam configuration or device selection than a general Windows connection failure; this is a useful inference, not a guaranteed diagnosis. Before contacting support, note the controller model, connection type, whether it responds in joy.cpl, whether it works in other games, the Steam Input setting tested, and any remapper that was running.
Steam lists Windows 10 as Stray’s minimum OS, so its requirements do not identify Windows 11 as unsupported; that requirement alone does not rule out a controller-specific issue. For unresolved technical problems, use Steam’s Stray technical-support page, which directs players to Annapurna Interactive support.
If you are using an Epic or other non-Steam copy, the per-game Steam Input steps do not apply directly. Test the controller in native PC/XInput mode first; PlayStation controllers may need a single translation tool such as DS4Windows. Do not run the game through multiple launcher overlays while diagnosing it.
