Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOBS Studio, XSplit Broadcaster, and Streamlabs Desktop all support capture cards. OBS is the cross-platform choice, XSplit Broadcaster is a Windows option with a documented dual-PC setup, and Streamlabs publishes capture-card setup and troubleshooting guidance. Compatibility depends on the exact card, operating system, connection, and video format—confirm those details before choosing software.
Which streaming software supports capture cards?
| Software | Operating system | Capture-card guidance | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Windows, macOS, and Linux; check current requirements for your system. | OBS lists capture cards among the sources you can add to a scene. It also maintains a certified-device list, which is useful but does not guarantee compatibility for every model and configuration. OBS Studio · system requirements · certified devices | People who want a free, open-source option or need software across different operating systems. |
| XSplit Broadcaster | Windows only; its requirements page lists Windows 10/11 64-bit. | XSplit documents adding a capture card as a video device in a dual-PC workflow. Dual-PC setup guide · requirements | Windows users following a two-computer setup who prefer XSplit’s workflow. |
| Streamlabs Desktop | Check current system requirements for your operating system and hardware. | Streamlabs provides capture-card setup and troubleshooting guidance, including device selection, conflicts, and device-specific setup. Capture-card setup and troubleshooting | Users who want Streamlabs’ documented setup and troubleshooting path. |
There is no universal winner established by these compatibility details alone. Check the exact card and your intended workload, then choose software that fits your operating system and workflow.
Check compatibility before installing or buying
Match the exact capture card to your system
Look up the full model name on the card maker’s current support page and check its required drivers, operating systems, ports, and supported input formats. A device appearing in OBS’s certified-device list is one useful signal; it is not an exhaustive guarantee that every combination of card, software, and computer will work. Elgato notes, for example, that using its 4K S with third-party programs such as OBS, XSplit, or Streamlabs can have different requirements from using Elgato Studio. Elgato downloads and support
Compare the whole video and audio path
- Source output: Confirm the console, camera, or second computer can output the resolution, frame rate, and format you want to capture.
- Computer connection: Check that the streaming computer has the required USB or other connection and that its operating system is supported.
- Audio: Determine whether sound travels through the capture card, a separate audio connection, or another supported route. Test it separately from video.
- Passthrough and latency: If you play through the card’s passthrough, verify the exact model’s passthrough formats and whether its latency suits your setup.
- Performance: Software, encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and computer hardware all affect load. OBS cautions that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a particular stream or recording will run well. OBS system requirements
Do not assume that a generic USB HDMI capture card supports a particular resolution or frame rate just because it appears as a video device. Verify the exact model’s specifications and software instructions.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add a capture card as a source
- Install the streaming software on the computer that will stream. For a dual-PC setup, this is the streaming PC, not necessarily the computer or console producing the video. Follow the capture-card maker’s current driver and setup instructions; the correct path varies by model.
- Connect the video source to the card. Connect the source’s video output to the capture card’s input, then connect the card to the streaming computer as described in its manual. Use ports and formats supported by that card.
- Add the card in your streaming application.
- XSplit Broadcaster: Select Add Source > Devices > Video, then choose the capture card from the device list. This is the path in XSplit’s documented dual-PC workflow.
- OBS Studio: Add a video-capture source to your scene and select the device. Refer to the current OBS guide and your card’s manual for the controls available with your model.
- Streamlabs Desktop: Follow Streamlabs’ capture-card setup guide; device-specific software or drivers may be required.
- Check picture and sound before going live. Confirm the expected image appears, select the intended audio source, and make a short test recording or private test stream if available.
- Set the stream to what your full setup can handle. Choose resolution and frame rate based on the source, card, computer, software, and internet connection together. Do not promise a specific output based on the capture card alone.
Troubleshoot a capture card that does not work
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Card is missing from the device list | Connection, driver, or device setup issue. | Check the cable and port, follow the card maker’s driver/setup instructions, and restart the software after connecting the card. |
| Card is listed but unavailable or black | Another program or an existing scene/source may already be using the device; the source connection or format may also be wrong. | Close other camera or capture applications, check other scenes for an active source using the card, and verify the source output and supported format. Streamlabs specifically identifies device conflicts as a troubleshooting issue. Streamlabs capture-card guidance |
| Video appears but audio does not | Audio may use a separate route or the wrong source may be selected. | Inspect the card’s audio instructions and your software’s selected audio source; test sound independently from the picture. |
| Video stutters or the stream drops frames | The chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene load, hardware, or network may exceed what the setup can sustain. | Compare the workload with current software and device requirements. Reduce output demands or scene complexity and test again; meeting minimum software requirements alone does not establish streaming performance. |
| Setup works in the card maker’s utility but not in streaming software | Third-party software may have different requirements or a different setup path. | Check the card maker’s current instructions for the specific third-party application and operating system. |
Keep a YouTube stream live without leaving a PC on
A capture card and streaming application are for bringing live video from a console, camera, or second computer into a scene. If instead you want a YouTube channel to loop uploaded recordings continuously, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed, and it streams to YouTube only. Learn more at StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay on at home; the service loops your uploaded video from the cloud. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
