For most creators running a continuous YouTube encoder stream, OBS Studio is the better starting point if you want a configurable setup and are comfortable arranging scenes and audio yourself. Streamlabs Desktop may suit you better if its guided onboarding and integrated presentation tools matter more and your PC has enough headroom. Neither app has a documented 24/7 reliability advantage in the available official guidance, and neither can compensate for an unstable connection, overloaded computer or power interruption. For either choice, plan a local recording: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its archive.
What is actually different between OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop?
Both are desktop encoder applications: your computer runs the software, encodes your scene and sends the stream to YouTube. The choice is mainly about setup style, your PC and the sources or presentation elements you need—not a proven difference in continuous-stream uptime.
| Decision point | OBS Studio | Streamlabs Desktop |
|---|---|---|
| Setup approach | Includes an Auto-Configuration Wizard that considers intended use, hardware and network conditions, followed by hands-on scene and output setup. OBS quick start guide | May suit creators who prefer guided onboarding and integrated presentation tools. The available official material does not establish a comparative 24/7 reliability advantage. |
| PC guidance | OBS publishes compatibility requirements, but warns that meeting them does not guarantee a system can stream or record at a particular load. Actual demands depend on encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. OBS system requirements | Streamlabs publishes minimum and recommended specifications, with 16 GB or more RAM, an SSD of 512 GB or more and Ethernet among its recommendations. These are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Streamlabs Desktop system requirements |
| Long-run evidence | No cited source establishes guaranteed uptime for a 24/7 run. | No cited source establishes guaranteed uptime for a 24/7 run. |
| Best fit | A creator who wants control over a configurable encoder workflow and can test their own setup. | A creator who values its guided and integrated workflow and whose PC can handle the chosen scenes and encoder. |
For gaming, animated overlays or several active sources, scene complexity can increase the workload in either app. Pick the workflow that fits your content, then test it on the actual machine you plan to leave running. Do not treat a listed operating-system or component requirement as proof that the PC can sustain your chosen stream settings.
Does either app work better on Indian internet?
The official guidance cited here does not compare Indian ISPs, regions, power reliability or OBS and Streamlabs performance on Indian connections. There is no supported universal “India bitrate.” Measure the upload speed where the streaming PC will sit and choose settings that your connection can sustain consistently, rather than choosing a bitrate from a peak-speed result.

YouTube recommends testing upload speed, checking audio and representative movement before going live, and monitoring stream health and messages during a broadcast. It also transcodes the incoming stream for viewers on different devices and networks, so sending a higher-quality feed does not mean every viewer receives that exact rendition. Use YouTube’s settings as a starting point—not a promise
YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrates vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed delivery quality or a substitute for testing stable upload headroom. For a continuous broadcast, a modest setting that stays healthy is more useful than a higher setting that repeatedly drops frames.

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are the recommended values in YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. The same guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264/H.265/AV1 video options, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data through Google’s servers. Use the codec your chosen encoder and workflow support, and set the resolution, frame rate and bitrate consistently in the encoder and Live Control Room.
How to choose and test your setup before a 24/7 run
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its live-streaming guidance says streamers must be at least 16 years old. Check the current requirements before scheduling your first broadcast. YouTube live-streaming requirements
- Choose the encoder to match your workflow. Start with OBS if you want its configurable workflow and Auto-Configuration Wizard. Choose Streamlabs Desktop if its guided onboarding and integrated presentation tools suit your production needs and the PC meets the vendor’s recommendations.
- Run a speed test at the streaming location. Use sustained upload performance as your guide, not your ISP plan’s advertised peak. Leave headroom for normal variation and other activity on the connection; reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate if the connection cannot reliably support your target.
- Set up the YouTube encoder connection. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream key for the broadcast and enter it in the encoder’s YouTube connection settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if it is exposed. When using Live Control Room, YouTube identifies resolution, frame rate and bitrate as encoder settings to specify.
- Configure the video output. Select a resolution and frame rate your machine and connection can sustain. Set the selected codec’s bitrate using YouTube’s guidance as a starting point, choose CBR, use a two-second keyframe interval, and use RTMPS where available.
- Build a representative scene and check audio. Add the sources you actually plan to use, confirm that the intended microphone or other audio devices are selected, and watch the audio meters. Test movement and sound similar to the real content; a static scene alone will not reveal every encoding or audio problem.
- Do a short private or otherwise non-public test before committing. OBS’s quick-start workflow recommends a test rather than immediately beginning a real broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health and encoder messages, confirm audio and motion, and adjust settings before leaving the system unattended.
- Keep monitoring and plan local capture. YouTube advises monitoring stream health while live. If the stream is meant to stay up continuously, decide in advance who will notice a problem and how the system will be checked; software compatibility does not remove the need to monitor the machine, connection and broadcast.
PC and operating-system requirements to check
OBS Studio
OBS’s published requirements list Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X or Wayland. The requirements page is dated 2021, so treat it as published baseline guidance rather than a promise about every current operating-system build or OBS release. OBS also stresses that compatibility alone does not guarantee streaming or recording performance. Check OBS’s system requirements

Streamlabs Desktop
In a system-requirements article dated April 25, 2025, Streamlabs lists Windows 10 or macOS 12 or later and 8 GB RAM as minimums. Its recommended setup includes an Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or AMD Ryzen 5000 series or higher, an Nvidia RTX 20/30 or AMD RX 5000/6000 series GPU, 16 GB or more RAM, at least a 512 GB SSD and an Ethernet connection. Streamlabs notes that needs vary with content, other running software and hardware, particularly for resource-intensive games, digital art, animated overlays or advanced plugins. Plan your archive: YouTube’s 12-hour limit matters
YouTube says a stream can be automatically archived when it is less than 12 hours long, recommends recording a local archive as backup, and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A true 24-hour broadcast therefore should not rely on YouTube retaining the whole stream. Plan a local recording or another deliberate archive workflow, and make sure the recording destination has enough available storage for the length and quality you choose. YouTube archive guidance

Copyright and channel-policy checks for a continuous broadcast
Before looping gameplay, music, video or other material, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the content and any audio included in it. Encoder choice does not change YouTube’s live-stream eligibility rules or make content permissible. Check YouTube’s current channel requirements and restrictions before starting; the cited live guidance specifies verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and a minimum streamer age of 16. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely cause to investigate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed drops | The chosen bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the connection may be varying. | Run another upload test from the streaming location, lower bitrate or output quality, and monitor stream health during a representative test. |
| Frames drop or the encoder struggles | The chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder or scene load may be too demanding for the PC. | Reduce scene complexity or output settings, close unnecessary workloads, and test again. Meeting minimum system requirements alone does not prove the computer can handle the selected load. |
| Viewers report missing or incorrect sound | The wrong audio device may be selected, levels may be muted, or the test may not have included representative audio. | Check the encoder’s audio meters and selected devices, then test the microphone and other sound sources before the public stream. |
| The 24-hour stream is not fully available as a YouTube archive | YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. | Use a local recording or another planned archive workflow instead of relying on YouTube’s archive for a stream of that length. |
| The stream cannot start | The channel may not meet YouTube’s live requirements, or the encoder may not be using the intended stream key. | Check channel eligibility in YouTube’s live guidance and verify that the encoder is configured with the correct private stream key. |
