streamreader.dll Missing: Restore the Correct DVB Application

streamreader.dll is a third-party application DLL, not a normal Windows system file. The most reliable repair is to identify the DVB program that requested it and repair or reinstall that exact program rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Identify the file before repairing it

The filename alone does not identify one universal binary. The strongest available identification is a legacy 32-bit streamreader.dll associated with DVB Workshop and attributed in reported file metadata to DVinGena. That metadata lists the internal name StreamReader, reported version 1.0.1.3, and a reported size of 36,864 bytes, but those details are not confirmed specifications from an active DVB Workshop vendor archive.

The filename is also used by newer DVB tuner components called StreamReaderEx-BDA. Those libraries are associated with applications such as CrazyScan, DVB Dream, EBSPro and TSReader. They are separate components and are not automatically compatible with the older DVB Workshop file.

A 32-bit application normally needs its 32-bit DLL even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Do not replace an old application’s file with a newer file that happens to have the same name.

Find which program produced the error

Before changing Windows, determine what actually requested streamreader.dll.

If the error appears when opening a program

Note the application name shown in the error or window title. Check whether the message appears when launching a DVB recorder, tuner utility, channel scanner, or scheduling program.

Then locate the program:

1. Press Windows + S.
2. Search for the application name.
3. Right-click it and select Open file location.
4. In File Explorer, right-click the shortcut and select Open file location again if it points to a shortcut.
5. Inspect the folder containing the program’s .exe file.

An application-private DLL normally belongs beside the executable or in one of the application’s own subfolders. Its absence there is a strong indication that the installation is incomplete.

If the error appears at Windows startup

The original DVB program may have been removed while its startup entry remained.

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
2. Select Startup apps.
3. Look for the removed DVB application or an unknown entry connected with it.
4. Select the entry and click Disable.
5. Restart Windows.

If the program is still installed, repair or uninstall it properly instead of deleting random files from startup folders.

If the message says “The specified module could not be found”

That wording does not always mean that streamreader.dll itself is missing. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load a dependency required by it.

The missing item could be:

• Another application DLL
• A Microsoft runtime named separately in the error
• A tuner or BDA driver
• A configuration file
• A library with the wrong architecture
• A file blocked by antivirus or permissions

Keep the complete message and check the application’s own log folder before replacing anything.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the exact DVB application

For this file, repairing the owning application is the safest and most likely solution.

Try the Windows repair option first

1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
2. Select Apps.
3. Select Installed apps.
4. Search for the DVB application named in the error.
5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
7. Select Repair.
8. Start the application again.

The Repair option may preserve settings while restoring missing program files. If there is no repair option, continue with a reinstall.

Reinstall from the original source

1. Close the DVB application.
2. Disconnect or stop any recording session.
3. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
4. Select the affected application.
5. Choose Uninstall.
6. Restart Windows if prompted.
7. Obtain the installer from the application’s original vendor, project, or legitimate archive.
8. Run the installer using the release intended for that application.
9. Install it into the normal application folder.
10. Restart Windows.
11. Launch the program and test the operation that previously failed.

Do not copy streamreader.dll manually into a random folder. The installer may also need to restore .ini files, tuner definitions, codecs, registry settings, or other private dependencies.

If the application is old, install the same release family that created the original configuration. A current-looking replacement may use a different tuner interface or configuration format.

Run the installer with administrator rights when needed

If setup fails to write its own installation folder:

1. Right-click the installer.
2. Select Properties.
3. Open the Compatibility tab.
4. Select Run this program as an administrator only if required by the installer.
5. Click Apply, then OK.
6. Run the installer again.

Do not use administrator mode as a substitute for identifying the correct application. It cannot make an incompatible DLL work.

How to tell whether this fix worked

The repair succeeded when:

• The application opens without the streamreader.dll message.
• The affected recording, scanning, or playback function starts.
• The program’s installation folder contains the files installed by the correct package.
• The same error does not return after restarting Windows.

If the file disappears again immediately, investigate antivirus quarantine before reinstalling repeatedly.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove an old or uncommon application DLL after installation. This is especially important if the file existed previously and vanished without an uninstall.

In Windows Security:

1. Open Start.
2. Search for Windows Security.
3. Open it.
4. Select Virus & threat protection.
5. Select Protection history.
6. Review recent detections.
7. Open any detection connected with the DVB application or streamreader.dll.

Fix 3: Check the DLL path and architecture

The reported legacy DVB Workshop file is 32-bit, but not every file with this name is necessarily that file. The correct architecture is determined by the application that loads it.

To inspect the existing file:

1. Open the application’s installation folder.
2. Right-click streamreader.dll.
3. Select Properties.
4. Open the Details tab.
5. Compare the description, product name, version, and publisher with the application you installed.
6. Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
7. Check the General tab for the file location and size.

A 32-bit application may be installed under C:Program Files (x86), although the folder location alone is not proof of architecture. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit DVB applications through its compatibility subsystem.

Do not put the file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 merely because a download page recommends it. Those folders are not general-purpose storage locations for application DLLs. Installing the wrong architecture globally can create harder-to-diagnose conflicts.

The correct destination is normally the folder selected by the application installer. Follow a specific vendor instruction only when it identifies the exact release and destination.

Fix 4: Repair a missing Microsoft runtime only when named

Installing Visual C++ is not the primary fix for a missing streamreader.dll. It is appropriate when the error also names a Microsoft runtime such as:

• VCRUNTIME140.dll
• MSVCP140.dll
• api-ms-win-crt-*.dll

Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable packages and match the package to the application’s architecture. An older 32-bit DVB application may require the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows.

If the application is 32-bit, install the Microsoft x86 package from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. If the application is 64-bit, use the x64 package. ARM64 packages apply only to compatible ARM devices.

After installation:

1. Restart Windows.
2. Launch the DVB application.
3. Check whether the error now identifies another missing component.
4. If streamreader.dll is still absent, return to repairing the application itself.

Installing both architectures does not replace the application DLL and is not a guaranteed repair.

Fix 5: Reinstall or update the DVB tuner driver

A tuner driver problem can look like a DLL problem, particularly when the application starts but fails while scanning, previewing, or recording.

Check Device Manager

1. Press Windows + X.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
4. Expand Network adapters if the tuner is a network device.
5. Look for the DVB tuner, BDA device, or an entry with a warning icon.
6. Right-click the device and select Properties.
7. Open the General tab and read the device status.
8. Open the Driver tab to review the provider, date, and version.
9. Select Update Driver and follow the available search option.

Use the driver supplied for the exact tuner model and Windows version. Do not assume that a generic driver supports every tuner mode.

If the driver was changed just before the error appeared:

1. Open the device’s Properties.
2. Select the Driver tab.
3. Choose Roll Back Driver if Windows makes that option available.
4. Restart Windows.
5. Test the DVB program again.

If the application itself is missing streamreader.dll, a driver reinstall will not recreate that application-private file. Driver repair is relevant when the program opens but cannot access the tuner or reports a dependency failure.

Manually comparing tuner models, BDA support and driver packages can mean hunting through many release pages and guessing which driver is stale. Fix 6: Check Windows components with DISM and SFC

SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party streamreader.dll from a DVB application folder, so use them when Windows itself is unstable or several system components are failing.

First install pending Windows updates:

1. Press Windows + I.
2. Select Windows Update.
3. Select Check for updates.
4. Install available updates.
5. Restart Windows.

Then open an elevated Command Prompt:

1. Open Start.
2. Type Command Prompt.
3. Right-click Command Prompt.
4. Select Run as administrator.
5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
6. Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for the command to finish. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Do not close the window until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows after both commands complete.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the result does not prove that streamreader.dll is healthy. It only means protected Windows files passed the check.

Repeatedly running these commands will not produce a missing third-party DLL. They are the wrong repair when only one DVB application is affected.

Do not enable random Windows features in the hope that one will recreate streamreader.dll. Use Windows Features only when the application documentation or error specifically identifies a missing Windows component.

To inspect optional features:

1. Press Windows + R.
2. Type:

1. Press Enter.
2. Review the available features.
3. Enable only the feature required by the application.
4. Select OK.
5. Restart Windows if prompted.

If the error names a runtime or framework that is not listed there, use the Microsoft-supported installer for that component instead of guessing. If no Windows feature is named, return to the application repair steps.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore may help when the file disappeared after a recent application installation, driver change, cleanup operation, or Windows update. It can revert system settings, installed programs and drivers to an earlier restore point while preserving personal files.

1. Press Windows + R.
2. Type:

rstrui.exe

1. Press Enter.
2. Select Next.
3. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
5. Review the programs and drivers that will be affected.
6. Select Next, then Finish.
7. Allow Windows to restart and complete the restoration.

You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore.

System Restore is not a substitute for reinstalling a damaged DVB application. If the restore succeeds but the application is still missing its files, reinstall the application from its original installer.

What not to do

Do not download an arbitrary DLL

Random DLL download sites may provide:

• The wrong DVB product’s file
• The wrong architecture
• A different version with incompatible exports
• A file missing required dependencies
• A modified or unsafe binary
• A file that does not match the application’s configuration

Even a clean file with the correct name may not fix the underlying installation. Use the original application installer or a legitimate vendor or project archive instead.

Do not copy the DLL into System32

A DLL loaded privately by an application should remain in that application’s installation directory unless its installer explicitly says otherwise. Copying it into a Windows system folder can cause Windows or another program to load the wrong binary.

Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a missing-file repair command.

A stream-processing or tuner library loaded privately by a DVB application generally does not need COM registration. Running:

regsvr32 streamreader.dll

may produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found, and it will not restore a missing dependency.

Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official instructions explicitly require registration for that exact DLL. If the file is 32-bit, registration from a 64-bit command environment can also be incorrect, but registration should not be attempted without evidence that it applies.

Do not substitute StreamReaderEx-BDA

A modern StreamReaderEx-BDA file may have different exports, dependencies, hardware support and configuration files. The shared filename does not make it a safe replacement for the legacy DVB Workshop DLL.

If the error returns after reinstalling

A recurring error usually means the cause was not the installer alone. Check these items in order:

1. Antivirus history: confirm whether the new file was quarantined immediately.
2. Installation path: verify that the application can read its folder.
3. Permissions: right-click the folder, select Properties > Security, and confirm that the user account has read and execute access.
4. Configuration files: check whether the application can create its .ini and log files.
5. Tuner driver: verify the device in Device Manager and reinstall the driver supported by the application.
6. Architecture: confirm that the application and DLL belong to the same release and architecture.
7. Dependency wording: read the full error because “module not found” may identify a dependency rather than the named DLL.
8. User profile: test the application from a new Windows user profile if only one account fails.
9. Startup entries: remove stale entries if the original application was uninstalled.
10. Event Viewer: open Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application and review errors recorded at the time of the crash.

If the application was removed but Windows still tries to start it, uninstall the parent program cleanly or disable its stale startup entry. If the file appears in an unexpected folder, has a different product identity, or is repeatedly detected as malicious, stop treating the issue as an ordinary missing-DLL problem and investigate the exact executable and file path.

FAQ

Is streamreader.dll part of Windows?

There is no reliable evidence that this DLL is a standard Windows component. Available records describe it as belonging to third-party DVB software. Windows Update, SFC and DISM normally will not recreate an application DLL that was deleted from a DVB program folder.

Which program installs streamreader.dll?

The strongest available identification associates the legacy file with DVB Workshop. The filename is not unique, however. Modern DVB software may use separate StreamReaderEx-BDA libraries with the same base filename. The calling executable and installation path are more reliable than the filename alone.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
