StreamVoodoo vs FFmpeg for a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Stream

FFmpeg is the more direct choice for sending one prerecorded file to YouTube Live; StreamVoodoo fits productions built around remote feeds and a switcher.

For sending a prerecorded file directly to a YouTube Live event, FFmpeg is the more direct fit. It can read a media file and send an encoded output to YouTube’s ingest server. StreamVoodoo is built around connecting and routing live video feeds; its documented playback path uses OBS Virtual Camera or NDI, with audio routed separately. Choose StreamVoodoo when remote contributors or a multi-feed production are part of the show, not simply to send one file to YouTube.

StreamVoodoo and FFmpeg solve different problems

Tool What it does Fit for one prerecorded file to YouTube
FFmpeg Reads media inputs, selects and processes audio/video streams, and writes output to a destination URL. More direct: configure an encoder output for YouTube’s server URL and stream key. It requires command-line setup and process monitoring.
StreamVoodoo Connects multiple video feeds in a browser and routes them through a switcher such as OBS or vMix. Its FAQ describes playback with OBS Virtual Camera or NDI and separate audio routing. Less direct for a lone file. It can make sense when the clip is one element in a remote-guest or multi-feed production.

This is a comparison of documented functions, not a hands-on test. The available product documentation does not establish a head-to-head reliability, quality, or cost result. FFmpeg documentation · StreamVoodoo FAQ

Choose based on the production you need

Choose FFmpeg for a direct file-to-stream workflow

  • The source is a video file and you want an encoder to send it to YouTube.
  • You are comfortable configuring a command line, codecs, destination details, and monitoring a running process.
  • You do not need browser-based guest feeds or a production switcher for the clip.

Choose StreamVoodoo when the clip is part of a live production

  • You need remote participants, separate live feeds, or browser-based contribution.
  • You plan to route sources through a switcher such as OBS or vMix.
  • You can configure the playback source using OBS Virtual Camera or NDI and handle its audio routing separately, as described in StreamVoodoo’s FAQ.

How to send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is the software encoder in this workflow. YouTube supplies the event’s ingest server URL and stream key; Live Control Room is where you create or schedule the event, preview the incoming feed, and start the scheduled broadcast.

  1. Prepare the video and audio. Confirm that the file plays correctly, has the intended audio track, and is the version you have permission to stream. Keep the source file accessible for the entire broadcast. FFmpeg’s documentation covers reading inputs, selecting streams, processing media, and writing outputs; the exact encoding options depend on your file and desired output.
  2. Create or schedule the YouTube event. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. Do not substitute an ingest address copied from an unrelated example.
  3. Configure FFmpeg to read the file and send output to YouTube. Select the needed video and audio streams, set the encoding and output options appropriate to the source, and use the event’s ingest details as the destination. FFmpeg supports this general input-to-output workflow, but there is no single command that is correct for every file, encoder build, YouTube event, and quality target. Consult the FFmpeg full documentation for the options your setup requires.
  4. Start FFmpeg and check the incoming preview. Run the command on a computer that will remain powered and connected for the stream. In Live Control Room, confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that picture and sound are correct. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview, then start the event in Live Control Room, following YouTube’s encoder workflow.
  5. Monitor the broadcast. Keep an eye on FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s Live Control Room while the event is running. If the encoder process stops or the connection is lost, the stream may stop; the cited documentation does not establish automatic recovery for this FFmpeg setup.

Use YouTube’s supplied ingest details

YouTube’s encoder workflow is to create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder, and start sending the output. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview before starting the event in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guide also says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to be enabled. These are platform workflow details, not guarantees about an individual broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder help.

YouTube’s RTMPS guide describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through an SSL connection. It requires the correct RTMPS protocol and endpoint, a valid application path, and a connection to port 443. Use the ingest details supplied for your own event, and consult the YouTube RTMPS guide if configuring that protocol.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Having permission to use an encoder does not grant permission to stream the video or its audio. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the necessary rights to every included element, including music, footage, and other people’s content. Check that the stream complies with YouTube’s applicable rules and your channel’s obligations. A prerecorded format does not by itself establish that content is authorized or eligible for a particular YouTube feature.

Troubleshooting common problems

YouTube does not show an incoming preview

  • Check that FFmpeg is still running and that its output reports no input, encoding, or connection failure.
  • Recheck the server URL and stream key against the specific event in Live Control Room. If you replace or reset the key, update the encoder configuration too.
  • If you are using RTMPS, verify the protocol, endpoint, application path, and port 443 requirements in the RTMPS guide.

There is video but no sound, or the wrong audio plays

  • Confirm the file contains the audio track you expect and that FFmpeg selects it for output.
  • If routing prerecorded playback through StreamVoodoo, its FAQ calls for separate audio routing alongside OBS Virtual Camera or NDI; check both the selected source and the switcher’s audio path.

The scheduled event is not live after the encoder connects

  • For a scheduled stream, check that the preview has arrived, then start the event in Live Control Room as YouTube’s workflow specifies.
  • If this is the first time the channel is going live, YouTube says enablement may take up to 24 hours; allow for that before the planned broadcast.

The stream stops when the computer or process stops

An FFmpeg workflow running on a computer depends on that computer, its network connection, and the encoder process remaining available. The cited FFmpeg and YouTube documentation does not establish automatic restart for a local command. If a broadcast must continue unattended, plan how you will monitor and restart the process, or use a cloud service designed to keep an uploaded-video stream running.
