Chun-Li’s Street Fighter 6 toolkit is built around a charged fireball, rapid Lightning Kicks, charge-based Spinning Bird Kick, and a stance that expands her advanced combo routes. Her three Super Arts are Kikosho, Hoyoku-sen and Soten Ranka. Classic controls retain every traditional motion, while Modern controls replace several motions with directional button shortcuts.
This guide gives the complete move notation, explains when each special move is useful, and teaches a practical combo progression: first a reliable normal confirm, then an Overdrive extension, and only afterward Drive Rush, Serenity Stream and Super routes.

How to read Chun-Li’s commands
Numerical notation describes the direction held or tapped on a standard eight-way layout. The numbers assume Chun-Li is facing right:

|---|---|
| 5 | Neutral or standing position |
| 2 | Down or crouching position |
| 4 | Back |
| 6 | Forward |
| 8 | Up |
| 236 | Quarter-circle forward |
| 214 | Quarter-circle back |
| 623 | Dragon-punch motion |
| [4] or [2] | Hold back or down to charge, then complete the motion |
Letters identify attack buttons: P means Punch and K means Kick. Light, Medium and Heavy specify strength. OD means Overdrive, performed with two attack buttons of the same type rather than one. For example, 236K is a regular Hundred Lightning Kicks input, while pressing two kick buttons produces its OD version.

When Chun-Li faces left, the horizontal directions reverse. A command written as 236 from the right-facing side is entered as 214 from the left-facing side relative to your controller. The move itself does not change; only the direction you input does.
Chun-Li’s control types
Street Fighter 6 has Classic, Modern and Dynamic control types. Classic uses the traditional six-button layout and complete motion inputs. Modern assigns attacks to a smaller set of buttons and provides directional shortcuts for many specials and Super Arts. Dynamic is intended for quick offline play and is restricted to certain Fighting Ground modes, so it is not a general replacement for Classic or Modern in every mode.
| Control type | Execution | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | Full six-button layout and traditional motions such as 236, 214, 623 and charge commands | Maximum command precision and access to the complete traditional input scheme | Requires learning quarter-circles, dragon-punch motions and charge timing |
| Modern | Simplified combinations using Special, Heavy and directional inputs | Starting quickly, executing specials consistently and learning match decisions before difficult motions | Damage or scaling trade-offs can depend on the current game version; no universal numerical penalty should be assumed |
| Dynamic | Context-sensitive quick-play controls | Limited offline Fighting Ground activities | Unavailable in many modes and not designed as a full competitive command set |
Modern does not remove Chun-Li’s core game plan. You still need to understand spacing, charge management, anti-air timing and Drive Gauge usage. It simply changes how several moves are called.
Chun-Li special-move list
Kikoken
Classic input: [4]6P.
Hold back to build charge, then press forward and Punch. Kikoken is Chun-Li’s projectile. The Punch strength changes its speed and travel behavior, allowing you to vary the timing at which it reaches the opponent. Do not release the back charge before the forward-plus-Punch input is ready; pressing forward too early turns the attempt into a normal movement input instead of a fireball.
Charge can be accumulated while crouching, walking backward or waiting at a distance. In neutral, the threat of Kikoken can make an opponent block or jump, giving Chun-Li a chance to advance or prepare an anti-air. Because the move is charge-based, plan the next charge while the current fireball is traveling rather than treating it as a purely reactionary special.
Hundred Lightning Kicks
Classic input: 236K.
Perform a quarter-circle forward and press a Kick button. The Kick strength selects the regular version, changing its timing and behavior. Press two Kick buttons together for the OD version. Hundred Lightning Kicks is one of Chun-Li’s most recognizable combo tools: it converts a confirmed normal into a multi-hit special and can help finish a route when you do not have a down charge available for Spinning Bird Kick.
Use the strength that fits your distance and combo timing rather than always choosing Heavy. In training mode, check whether the final hit connects from the normal you are using, because a route that works at point-blank range may leave the opponent too far away after a different button or spacing situation.
Aerial Hundred Lightning Kicks
Classic input: 236K during a vertical or forward jump.
The input is performed in the air during a neutral jump or forward jump. It gives Chun-Li an active airborne attack that can alter the timing of her approach and punish an opponent who expects a normal jump-in. Because the move is performed after leaving the ground, it cannot replace grounded anti-airs; use it as an approach or jump-timing option.
Spinning Bird Kick
Classic input: [2]8K.
Hold down to charge, then press up and Kick. Spinning Bird Kick is a core combo ender and an important anti-air tool. The strength of the Kick button changes the version. Its OD form opens stronger follow-up routes, which is why it appears in Chun-Li’s more advanced conversions.
The difficult part is not the up-plus-Kick motion; it is preserving the down charge while confirming a hit. After a crouching normal, keep holding down during the confirm, then complete the charge only when the combo is ready. If you are blocking or walking forward, you may not have enough charge time, so choose another ender instead of forcing a missed input.

Hazanshu
Classic input: 214K.
Quarter-circle back plus Kick makes Hazanshu, a forward-moving overhead-style approach attack. Its version changes speed and frame properties, so the button choice affects how quickly Chun-Li reaches the opponent and what happens when the move is blocked or connects.
Hazanshu is useful when an opponent is waiting for a low attack or a straightforward Kikoken approach. It should not be used automatically: vary it with grounded normals, throws and movement so the opponent cannot simply react to the same forward-moving attack every time.
Tensho Kicks
Classic input: 623K.
Use a dragon-punch motion followed by Kick. Tensho Kicks rises vertically and serves as a dedicated anti-air and a common combo ender. The move is especially valuable when an opponent jumps at a range where a normal anti-air would be late or out of position.
Practice the 623 motion from both sides. A clean diagonal sequence is more reliable than attempting to press forward, release the stick and then search for down-forward after the fact. Tensho Kicks can also close a combo after another special, but confirm that the opponent is still in range before spending the ender.

Serenity Stream
Serenity Stream is Chun-Li’s stance and the gateway to her more advanced attack routes. In Classic notation, the command reference accesses it with a quarter-circle-back Kick input, after which attack buttons select stance follow-ups. Because Hazanshu also uses a 214K notation, the exact Kick strength, button assignment or stance-entry distinction should be checked in the current in-game command list after patches.
Stance routes are powerful because they let Chun-Li continue pressure or convert a Drive Rush into additional attacks, but they add timing and branching decisions. Learn the normal-confirm routes below before trying to improvise Serenity Stream follow-ups in a live match.
Super Arts
| Super Art | Level | Classic input | Modern input | Primary role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kikosho | Level 1 | 236236P | Neutral or forward + Special + Heavy | Fast Level 1 Super used after a confirmed opening or as a resource-efficient ender |
| Hoyoku-sen | Level 2 | 236236K | Back + Special + Heavy | Level 2 Super for larger conversions when the route and Drive Gauge plan justify the cost |
| Soten Ranka | Level 3/Critical Art | 214214K | Down + Special + Heavy | Highest-level Super Art, available for major confirms and Critical Art situations |
Classic players should complete two quarter-circle motions cleanly before pressing the attack button. Modern players still need to choose the correct direction: neutral or forward for Kikosho, back for Hoyoku-sen and down for Soten Ranka. Save a Super cancel for a confirmed hit or a practiced combo route; spending meter on a blocked normal leaves Chun-Li without the payoff.
Modern-control command reference
Modern controls replace several motion inputs with directional shortcuts. The following commands are the Chun-Li-specific references:
| Move | Modern shortcut |
|---|---|
| Hundred Lightning Kicks | Neutral + Special |
| Tensho Kicks | Forward + Special |
| Kikoken | Back + Special while charging |
| Hazanshu | Down + Special |
| Aerial Hundred Lightning Kicks | Special during a vertical or forward jump |
| Kikosho | Neutral or forward + Special + Heavy |
| Hoyoku-sen | Back + Special + Heavy |
| Soten Ranka | Down + Special + Heavy |
The Kikoken shortcut still requires a back charge. Modern simplifies the final command, but it does not turn the projectile into an immediate button press with no charge requirement. Likewise, Aerial Hundred Lightning Kicks remains an airborne action and must be performed during a vertical or forward jump.
A practical Chun-Li combo progression
1. Build a simple confirm first
Start with standing Medium Punch > crouching Medium Punch. The goal is to recognize whether the first normal connected and then complete the second normal without mashing. Once the crouching Medium Punch confirms, finish with a safe special. Spinning Bird Kick is the natural example when you have held the required down charge.
- Begin in training mode at a range where standing Medium Punch reaches.
- Hold down after the first normal so the charge for Spinning Bird Kick is available while you confirm.
- Press crouching Medium Punch.
- On hit, complete [2]8K with the Kick strength you have practiced.
- On block, stop rather than automatically spending the special if your chosen route is not safe in the situation.
This route teaches the essential Chun-Li habit: charge during the normal sequence, not after the confirm has already passed.
Rank #3
- Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
- Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
- Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
- In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
- Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.
2. Add the documented OD extension
A published SF6 Lab route is st.MP > cr.MP > OD Spinning Bird Kick > Light Hundred Lightning Kicks > Heavy Tensho Kicks. It demonstrates how an OD special can extend a confirm into multiple follow-ups.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm standing Medium Punch into crouching Medium Punch while maintaining the down charge.
- Use the two-Kick OD input for Spinning Bird Kick.
- After the OD move creates the required juggle opportunity, perform Light Hundred Lightning Kicks.
- Finish with Heavy Tensho Kicks using the 623K motion.
Because spacing and timing affect whether every hit connects, record the sequence in training mode and check both sides of the screen. If the final Tensho Kicks misses, verify that you used the Light version of Hundred Lightning Kicks and that the OD Spinning Bird Kick actually connected at the intended distance.
3. Introduce Drive Rush and Serenity Stream
Only add a Drive Rush or stance route after the basic confirm is automatic. SF6 Lab also documents routes that use Serenity Stream and OD Kikoken before a normal and Spinning Bird Kick ender. These routes require more precise charge retention and stance timing than the starter above.
- Keep the original normal confirm consistent before adding another branch.
- Learn the exact Serenity Stream entry and follow-up button from the current command list.
- Practice the OD Kikoken route separately so you know when the charge is available.
- Use the simpler Spinning Bird Kick ender whenever the advanced branch is not fully confirmed.
4. Add Super cancels last
Super Arts should be reserved for confirmed hits and resource-aware enders. Practice the route in the official Combo Trials mode, which is designed to teach practical combinations for real fights. A combo that works only when you guess correctly is not yet a reliable match tool; first make the normal confirm and special ender consistent, then add the Super input at the point where the game confirms the hit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use the move list in a match
At long and mid range
Use Kikoken to control the rhythm, but keep charging while the projectile travels. If the opponent jumps, Tensho Kicks is the rising answer. If they stay grounded and block repeatedly, walk behind the projectile or change the timing rather than throwing the same fireball pattern.
When approaching
Hazanshu gives Chun-Li a forward-moving overhead-style option. Mix it with normal attacks, throws and measured movement. Aerial Hundred Lightning Kicks can alter the timing of a vertical or forward jump, but it does not replace grounded footsies or an anti-air reaction.
After a confirmed normal
Use the route that matches your resources and charge state. Spinning Bird Kick is the basic charge-based ender, Hundred Lightning Kicks is a quarter-circle-forward alternative, and Tensho Kicks is the rising ender or anti-air conversion. OD versions can create stronger follow-ups, but they consume Drive resources that may be needed for Drive Rush, Drive Impact defense or burnout prevention.
When the opponent jumps
Prioritize Tensho Kicks when the range and timing are appropriate. Spinning Bird Kick also functions as an anti-air tool, particularly when you already have the down charge. Choose the move you can execute immediately; a theoretically stronger option that arrives late will lose to the jump-in.
Charge management and troubleshooting
Kikoken does not come out
- Confirm that you held back long enough before pressing forward plus Punch.
- Do not release the charge while walking forward or returning the stick to neutral.
- Remember that the required direction changes when Chun-Li faces left.
- In Modern, hold back before using Back + Special; the shortcut does not remove the charge requirement.
Spinning Bird Kick misses after crouching Medium Punch
- Keep holding down during the normal confirm.
- Complete the up-plus-Kick motion only after the hit is confirmed.
- Check that you did not accidentally press forward, which can erase the down charge.
- Test the route from both sides because reversed facing can make a familiar motion feel different.
The stance route feels inconsistent
Open Chun-Li’s current in-game command list and verify the exact Serenity Stream entry and follow-up labels. Patch updates can change command presentation, and the quarter-circle-back Kick notation overlaps with the notation commonly shown for Hazanshu. Learn one stance follow-up at a time instead of trying to remember every branch.
Recommended Free Tools
Choosing Classic or Modern for Chun-Li
Choose Classic if you want the full six-button layout, traditional charge and motion execution, and the greatest command precision. Choose Modern if simplified specials let you focus on spacing, anti-air decisions and confirms while you build execution confidence. Neither choice removes the need to understand Chun-Li’s charge timing or resource economy.
Do not assume a fixed damage penalty for Modern across every version. Damage and scaling details can change with game updates, and a current authoritative version reference is required before assigning a number. Dynamic controls are a separate offline convenience and are not a substitute for selecting Classic or Modern for regular online play.
