Street Fighter 6 combines its classic cast with a modern presentation rather than treating the veterans as museum pieces. The game launched on June 2, 2023, with 18 starting characters in the Standard Edition. Returning fighters retain recognizable silhouettes, signature techniques and rivalries, but receive new physiques, costumes and circumstances. Later downloadable characters expand the roster, so the launch cast should not be mistaken for the complete current lineup.
The clearest way to encounter the series’ history is to use all three launch modes: meet legendary fighters as masters in World Tour, play Street Fighter II and Final Fight in the Battle Hub Game Center, and study modern commands and presentation in Fighting Ground. Together, these systems make classic references playable instead of leaving them as background decoration.

What “classic characters” means in Street Fighter 6
For this game, “classic cast” means returning Street Fighter veterans who appear in the launch-era roster and subsequent updates. It does not mean that every fighter from the franchise’s history is playable in the base game. The launch package contains 18 characters; downloadable additions arrive separately and can change the roster over time.
Among the launch veterans are foundational World Warriors such as Ryu, Chun-Li, Guile, E. Honda, Dhalsim, Blanka and Zangief, alongside long-running rivals and antagonistic figures including Ken, Cammy, Juri and Dee Jay. Their inclusion matters because players recognize more than names: each brings a familiar silhouette, a characteristic movement language and a set of techniques that can be traced through earlier games.

| How players recognize the veteran | What Street Fighter 6 changes | Where to examine it |
|---|---|---|
| Silhouette and physique | Distinct muscle tones and body proportions were created for the 18 starting characters rather than applying one generic athletic model. | Character select, Fighting Ground matches and World Tour master encounters |
| Signature fighting style | Classic special moves and commands remain identifiable while the modern control, Drive and combo systems alter how they are used. | Fighting Ground tutorials, character guides and Practice |
| Costume and life stage | Clothing and visual details suggest that familiar fighters have moved into new personal or professional phases. | World Tour scenes, versus intros and character stories |
| Historical setting | Arcade history is represented directly through playable cabinets rather than only through visual callbacks. | Battle Hub Game Center |
This approach lets the game preserve continuity without freezing anyone in a 1990s costume. A player who remembers an earlier version can identify the fighter immediately, then notice what has changed in posture, clothing, animation and context.
Where the classic references appear
World Tour: meet veterans as masters
World Tour is an avatar-led, single-player story with role-playing elements. You create a custom fighter, travel through the Street Fighter world and meet legendary characters as “masters.” Training under a master teaches the avatar that character’s techniques and allows moves from different styles to be combined.
This is the most substantial narrative use of the classic cast. A veteran is not merely selected from a menu; the character becomes a mentor with a location, dialogue, missions and a recognizable fighting philosophy. The mode also gives newcomers a practical reason to learn what distinguishes one style from another. You can equip a move associated with a master, test it in the field and then return for further instruction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Create the avatar. Begin World Tour and complete its opening lessons so the basic movement and combat systems are available.
- Travel to new locations. Progress through story objectives and side activities until master encounters become available.
- Enroll with a master. Speak with the veteran and follow the training prompts to unlock that style’s techniques and special moves.
- Build a mixed loadout. Equip compatible normal attacks and special moves from different masters, then test the result against opponents.
- Return for missions and bond events. Additional interactions deepen the character presentation and unlock more of the style.
Because the avatar can combine techniques, World Tour is also a reference guide in playable form: it shows what a veteran’s moves look like while explaining how those moves function inside SF6’s systems.
Battle Hub: the arcade lineage is playable
The Battle Hub is an online social space, but its Game Center gives it a direct historical function. Capcom’s official description specifically includes playable cabinets for Street Fighter II and Final Fight. These are not decorative props. You can sit at a cabinet, launch the older game and experience the arcade material that SF6 is invoking.

Use the Game Center when you want to compare eras rather than simply recognize a reference. Observe how attack buttons, jump arcs, round pacing and special-move inputs differ from SF6. The contrast explains why a returning character can feel familiar while still requiring a different strategy in the modern game.
Fighting Ground: compare the modern implementation
The launch package’s Fighting Ground contains standard Versus matches, tutorials, character guides and practice tools. It is the best place to examine how a veteran’s classic commands have been adapted to SF6. A tutorial identifies the intended functions of key attacks; a character guide demonstrates core combos and special moves; Practice lets you pause, record actions and test spacing without the pressure of a match.
For a useful comparison, first play a veteran in Practice, then use the Game Center cabinet for an older title. Focus on one move at a time: its input, range, recovery, purpose and role in a combo. Avoid assuming that an animation with the same name has the same frame data or tactical value in both games.
How returning fighters were redesigned
Capcom’s classic-cast interview describes a deliberate visual update. The team gave the 18 starting characters distinct muscle tones, so their bodies communicate different training histories instead of sharing one template. That decision is visible before a round begins: posture, shoulder width, leg development and overall mass help separate a grappler from a disciplined martial artist or a character built around speed.
The team also discussed using the Street Fighter II anime movie as a visual reference. This does not make the film a canonical explanation for every costume or animation, but it shows how the developers connected SF6’s new artwork to one of the franchise’s most recognizable visual periods.

Redesigns work on several levels:
- Recognition: Color blocks, hair shapes, stances and signature props preserve immediate identity.
- Function: Clothing is adjusted so attacks read clearly and bodies can move convincingly during modern animation.
- Character progression: New outfits and settings imply that veterans have lives beyond repeating the same tournament.
- System communication: Distinct silhouettes make it easier to read attacks and ranges during a busy match.
The result is not a museum recreation of an older sprite. It is an interpretation that keeps the visual anchors while allowing SF6’s animation, camera work and Drive mechanics to operate on their own terms.

SF6’s references are not limited to returning names. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s interview with Capcom’s design staff explains how newer fighters were developed through the idea of the World Warriors and through their personal backgrounds.
Kimberly
Kimberly’s design connects her fighting identity to her upbringing and interests rather than presenting her as a replacement for an older ninja character. Her visual language, accessories and movement style communicate a specific cultural and personal point of view. Reading those details as intentional design is supported by the Capcom interview; assigning a more specific symbolic meaning requires interpretation, not a stated canon fact.
Manon
Manon’s presentation likewise draws on her cultural background and life as a model and judoka. Her proportions, runway-like posing and grappling techniques make her distinct from the franchise’s older wrestlers. The reference is therefore cultural as well as mechanical: the character’s identity informs how she moves, poses and occupies the screen.
These examples matter because they broaden what a “reference” can be. SF6 can acknowledge Street Fighter history through a returning move or costume, but it can also build continuity by showing how a new World Warrior’s background shapes her design.

A practical guide to finding references yourself
- Start in World Tour. Create an avatar and follow the opening story until the first master becomes available.
- Record each master’s style. Note the stance, normal attacks, special moves and Super Arts introduced during training.
- Visit the Battle Hub Game Center. Locate a cabinet running Street Fighter II or Final Fight and play a few rounds rather than treating it as scenery.
- Open Fighting Ground’s character guides. Choose a veteran and complete the guide sections for movement, specials and basic combos.
- Use Practice for a controlled comparison. Test the same type of attack in SF6, then compare its older counterpart in the cabinet game.
- Check costumes and story scenes. Character stories, World Tour dialogue and versus intros reveal changes that a match-only session can miss.
This route separates confirmed, interactive references from guesses about background objects. A cabinet, master relationship or documented design choice is verifiable in the game or in Capcom’s interviews; an uncredited poster or passing visual resemblance should be treated cautiously.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.SF6 references versus earlier Street Fighter games
When comparing entries, use four questions instead of asking whether one game has “more nostalgia.”
| Comparison question | Street Fighter 6 example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is the character playable? | A launch veteran can be selected in Fighting Ground; another historical figure may appear as a World Tour master or non-player character instead. | Appearance in the story does not automatically mean inclusion in the versus roster. |
| What form does the reference take? | Move, costume, setting, dialogue, master relationship or playable arcade cabinet. | Different reference types serve different purposes: mechanics, story, visual history or direct preservation. |
| Is the presentation preserved or modernized? | Recognizable silhouettes and techniques coexist with updated bodies, clothing, animation and Drive-system interactions. | Familiarity is maintained without reproducing an older game’s exact rules. |
| Is it in the base game or later content? | The Standard Edition launched with 18 characters; later downloadable additions are separate from that starting roster. | Roster claims need a date and edition attached to them. |
This framework also prevents a common error: calling every historical appearance a playable classic character. SF6 deliberately distributes its history across modes, and each mode has a different level of interaction.
Street Fighter’s historical and commercial context
A licensed Street Fighter figure-collection publication dates the franchise’s arcade beginning to 1987 and Street Fighter II to 1991. Those dates provide useful orientation for understanding why the Game Center cabinets matter, although a merchandise publication is not a complete scholarly chronology.

Common misconceptions about the classic cast
“Every old fighter is playable.”
No. The launch roster has 18 characters, while World Tour can present additional legends as masters or story figures. Downloadable content can add playable characters later, so the launch list and the current roster are different questions.
“A new costume means the old identity was discarded.”
The redesign strategy preserves silhouettes, techniques and recognizable visual cues while changing clothing and life circumstances. The purpose is continuity with progression, not replacement.
“A background object is automatically canon.”
Only documented or directly playable material can be stated confidently as an official reference. Treat uncredited environmental similarities as interpretation unless Capcom identifies them.
“The classic moves work exactly as they did before.”
Names and animations may be familiar, but SF6’s controls, Drive mechanics, combo routes and balance alter their practical use. Check the in-game character guide and test the move in Practice before relying on memory.
What to take away
Street Fighter 6 treats its history as something the player can enter, study and play. Returning veterans anchor the launch roster, World Tour turns them into mentors, Battle Hub cabinets preserve landmark arcade titles, and Fighting Ground explains how their techniques function in a modern ruleset. Capcom’s documented attention to distinct physiques and the Street Fighter II anime movie shows that the visual continuity was planned, while Kimberly and Manon demonstrate that cultural identity is part of the series’ present-day design language. The result is a game where classic references are not limited to nostalgia: they are integrated into the roster, story, training tools and playable arcade history.
