Street Fighter 6 Classic vs. Modern vs. Dynamic Controls: What Changes and Which Should You Use?

By VGSources Team 7 min read

Classic keeps Street Fighter’s traditional six-button layout and command inputs. Modern simplifies special-move execution and adds assisted combo routes while remaining legal in online modes. Dynamic uses AI-assisted attacks for quick, casual offline matches, but it is unavailable online and limited to selected Fighting Ground modes.

That makes the choice less about a universal “best” setting and more about the execution burden, learning goal and modes you plan to play. If online play matters, choose Classic or Modern; Dynamic is ruled out by its mode restriction.

What the three control types mean

Street Fighter 6 gives every player three distinct control philosophies rather than three cosmetic layouts. The differences affect how you request attacks, how much of a character’s command vocabulary you operate directly and where that control type can be used.

Classic: the traditional six-button model

Classic is the familiar Street Fighter arrangement: six attack buttons and the command-input language used by earlier games. You directly perform the directional sequences and button combinations that produce special moves. It is available in Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour.

Street Fighter 6 - PS5
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.

Classic is the clearest choice if you want the series’ established control vocabulary, are learning traditional execution deliberately or want the broadest direct control over a character’s attacks. It also avoids having the game translate your intent through an assisted input system. The trade-off is that every motion and button combination is your responsibility.

Modern: simplified specials with assisted routes

Modern compresses the execution required for many special moves. Capcom describes a special move as being performed by combining the “Special Move” button with one directional input. Holding “Assist” while pressing attack buttons can produce simple combo routes.

Capcom introduced the scheme specifically for players who find fighting-game inputs intimidating. In its June 2, 2022 explanation, the company wrote: “For those who are worried that fighting game inputs are too complicated, we would like to introduce you to Street Fighter 6’s Modern Control Type, where a special move can be performed by combining the ‘Special Move’ button with one directional input.”

Modern is not an offline-only training option. It works in Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour, including online modes. That combination—lower execution demand plus online access—is why it is the practical starting point for many newcomers and returning players who do not want to relearn every motion before competing.

Dynamic: AI-assisted attacks for casual offline play

Dynamic is the most automated option. Nintendo labels it “Battle with AI-assisted attacks,” while Capcom positions it for quick casual games with friends and family and for learning a character’s basics.

  • 26 Characters, 20 Stages and Outfit 1 Colors to Choose From – Enjoy your favorite classics and newcomers from the originally launched 18 roster, plus new fighters from the year 1 and year 2 pass such as Mai, Rashid, M. Bison, and Elena.
  • This edition also includes the additional stages and outfit 1 colors 3-10 provided in the year 1 and year 2 passes.
  • Enjoy the Full Street Fighter 6 Experience – Players can enjoy all contented included in the original game including training mode, real time commentary and avatar customization.
  • Supports Cross Platform Play – Play against other fighters from other systems including the Nintendo Switch 2 in smooth 60 fps.

The restriction is decisive: Dynamic is limited to certain offline Fighting Ground modes and cannot be used in online matches. It is therefore a quick experimentation tool, not a control type for Battle Hub competition, online matchmaking or World Tour progression. If you intend to take the same setup into online play, use Classic or Modern instead.

Classic, Modern and Dynamic at a glance

Control type Input philosophy Best fit Online availability Mode scope
Classic Traditional six-button layout and command inputs Experienced players and learners of traditional execution Yes Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour
Modern Simplified special-move inputs plus assisted combos Beginners, returning players and anyone seeking easier execution Yes Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour, including online modes
Dynamic AI-assisted attack selection Casual local play and quick character experimentation No Certain offline Fighting Ground modes only

Which control type should you choose?

Choose Classic if execution is part of the appeal

Classic suits players who want to learn the conventional Street Fighter skill set directly. The six-button layout gives you the traditional attack structure, and command inputs remain yours to perform rather than being reduced to a direction-plus-special-button request.

It is also a sensible long-term choice when your goal is to transfer habits from earlier Street Fighter games or to understand the series through its original control language. Classic is supported across Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour, so selecting it does not close off any of the game’s listed modes.

Choose Modern if you want online play without a high execution barrier

Modern is the strongest default for a first-time player who wants to fight online quickly. It keeps online access while reducing the number of precise inputs required for special moves and offering assisted combo routes.

Use it when your immediate priority is learning spacing, blocking, timing, matchup decisions or a character’s basic game plan instead of spending your first sessions drilling every command motion. It is equally reasonable for a returning player who remembers the strategy of Street Fighter but no longer wants execution to be the first hurdle.

Choose Dynamic for a short, local, low-pressure session

Dynamic is appropriate when the objective is to start a casual match immediately, let the game assist with attacks and introduce a character’s basic feel. Its AI-assisted approach is aimed at quick games with friends and family rather than a complete competitive control vocabulary.

Do not choose Dynamic expecting to carry the setting into Battle Hub or an online match. The offline Fighting Ground limitation is a hard boundary, not a matchmaking preference.

How the input philosophies feel different in practice

Traditional execution versus intent-based commands

With Classic, the route from your hands to the move is explicit: you perform the command input and select the attack button. That can feel demanding at first, but it also makes execution practice a central, visible part of learning.

Modern changes that route. You identify the special-move command through the dedicated Special Move input and a direction, while Assist can add a simple combo route when paired with attacks. The control scheme shifts attention away from memorizing and reproducing every motion and toward deciding when to attack, defend or move.

Dynamic goes further by allowing AI assistance to influence attack selection. It is designed to get a casual player into action quickly, not to preserve the same degree of direct input responsibility as Classic or Modern.

What remains the same

All three options are ways to control Street Fighter 6 characters; they are not separate game modes or separate rosters. The important differences established by Capcom and Nintendo are the input method, assistance level and where each type is available. Character-specific feel, available moves, damage behavior and event rules can vary by character, patch, event and platform, so do not assume that a general control description predicts every detail of a particular character.

A practical decision guide

  1. Decide whether online access is required. If the answer is yes, eliminate Dynamic immediately. Classic and Modern are the two options listed for online-capable modes.
  2. Set your execution target. Choose Classic when performing traditional command inputs is part of what you want to learn. Choose Modern when you want special moves and simple combos to require fewer complicated inputs.
  3. Identify the session’s purpose. For a quick offline game with family or friends, Dynamic can reduce the setup and execution burden. For a structured learning session or online practice, Classic or Modern gives you a control type that is also supported beyond the selected offline Fighting Ground modes.
  4. Start with one character and one control type. Learn the character’s movement, defensive options and basic attacks before judging the scheme. Switching repeatedly can make it difficult to tell whether a problem comes from the character, the control layout or unfamiliar timing.
  5. Reassess after you know what feels difficult. If Classic’s command inputs are blocking you from learning the game’s decisions, Modern directly addresses that barrier. If Dynamic feels too automated for the way you want to play, move to Modern for a more direct online-capable setup or to Classic for the traditional model.

Common questions and constraints

Are Modern controls only for beginners?

No. Modern is explicitly available in online modes, so it is not confined to a tutorial or offline training environment. It is a legitimate control choice for anyone who values simplified execution, including returning players and people who want to focus on strategic decisions before mastering traditional inputs.

Can Dynamic controls be used online?

No. Dynamic cannot be used in online matches. Its availability is limited to certain offline Fighting Ground modes.

Does Classic provide more direct control?

Classic preserves the six-button layout and command-input system, so you perform the traditional inputs yourself. That makes it the most direct representation of Street Fighter’s established control vocabulary. The exact move access, feel and other gameplay effects can vary by character, patch and platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Modern make every move identical to Classic?

The official descriptions establish the simplified special-move input and assisted-combo functions, not a universal promise that every character’s move access, damage or handling is identical across control types. Those details can vary, so check the character and version you are playing rather than assuming the three schemes are mechanically interchangeable.

Which modes support each option?

Classic and Modern are listed for Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour. Dynamic is listed only for certain offline Fighting Ground modes. This mode difference is the most important practical distinction when deciding whether a control type will fit your routine.

Street Fighter 6 on Nintendo Switch 2

The listing also identifies a Years 1–2 Fighters Edition containing additional characters and stages. Edition availability can vary by region and platform, but the control-type decision remains the same: Classic and Modern support the listed online-capable modes, while Dynamic remains restricted to selected offline Fighting Ground play.
