What “input delay” in an SF6 online match can actually mean
A button that appears to respond late does not always indicate one network problem. Four different conditions can look similar during a match:

- Wireless instability: Wi‑Fi interference or retransmissions can make the connection fluctuate, even when a speed test reports a high download rate.
- Relay routing: SF6 attempts a direct player-to-player (P2P) path. If that path cannot be established because required traffic is blocked, the game may use a relay connection; Capcom warns that match quality is poor when this happens.
- Peer-specific reachability: A strict NAT, packet filtering, or an ISP restriction can prevent a clean connection to particular opponents while other matches work normally.
- Local frame-time problems: A PC that is missing its frame-rate target can feel delayed or stuttery even when the network path is healthy.
SF6 does not publish a universal latency threshold, matchmaking success rate, or outage duration that can be used to diagnose every case. Treat the symptom, the connection path, and the scope of the problem as separate clues.
Use the symptom to choose the first test

Step 1: Establish a clean network baseline
Make the simplest, reversible changes first. They remove common sources of packet loss and make later tests meaningful.

- Close SF6 completely. Exit to the platform dashboard or desktop rather than leaving the game suspended.
- Power-cycle the network equipment. Turn off the modem and router, wait before powering them back on as Capcom advises, and allow the connection to return fully before launching the game.
- Reduce local traffic. Temporarily disconnect or pause other PCs, phones, streaming devices, cloud synchronization, large downloads, and game updates. Multiple active devices can make the connection unstable.
- Replace Wi‑Fi with Ethernet for the test. Run a cable directly from the console or PC to the router. A normal Cat6 cable is sufficient for this purpose; the important change is the wired path, not a particular cable brand.
- Run the same mode again. Note whether the delay occurs against every opponent, only in one room, or only when the game reports a relay connection.
This baseline does not repair a remote player’s network, a service outage, or an unstable PC. Its purpose is to remove variables on your side before you change router or firewall settings.
Step 2: Check whether the match is direct P2P or relay
SF6 online network battles are built around peer-to-peer connections rather than a single gameplay server carrying every match. The game can fall back to a relay when it cannot create the required direct path. Capcom describes the relay state as having poor match quality compared with proper P2P.
Read the pre-match indicator
Before the fight starts, look above the player title on the pre-match screen. Capcom documents separate indicators for a relay connection and a proper P2P connection. The exact symbol matters less than the distinction: a relay icon means the connection path is not the preferred direct route.

- Cancel the search or room only if the game allows you to do so without triggering a disconnection penalty; otherwise finish the session and test the next opponent.
- Confirm that your device is wired and that other household traffic is paused.
- Check the router’s NAT status and UPnP or packet-filtering settings.
- Ask the opponent whether they are also on a restricted network. A relay can be caused by either side.
A relay indicator is evidence about the path, not a measurement of a specific millisecond delay. Do not infer a universal latency number from the icon.

Step 3: Investigate NAT, UPnP, and router filtering safely
NAT determines how devices on your private network are presented to the internet. A strict or incompatible NAT can make it difficult to reach some players. Capcom’s error guidance associates frequent 50383-MW1 errors with NAT differences and identifies 50382-MW1 as a player-to-player connection timeout.
Check the router before changing anything
- Open the router’s administration page or companion app.
- Find the internet, WAN, gaming, or network-status section and record the displayed NAT type or NAT status.
- Locate UPnP and packet-filtering controls. Note their current values before changing them.
- Check whether the router is behind another router, a mesh gateway, or an ISP-provided modem that is also performing NAT. Two layers of NAT can prevent inbound peer discovery.
- Apply one change at a time, restart the game, and test with the same opponent or mode so you can tell whether the change helped.
UPnP and filtering considerations
UPnP can allow a game console or PC to request the temporary mappings it needs for a session. If UPnP is disabled, broken, or blocked by a second gateway, direct P2P may fail. Conversely, some administrators intentionally disable automatic mappings for security reasons. Follow your router and ISP documentation, and keep a record of every setting you alter.
Packet-filtering rules can block the traffic required for player-to-player negotiation. Do not disable the router firewall indiscriminately. If you need a manual rule, use only the ports and directions documented for your platform and network equipment. The official SF6 guidance explains the P2P-versus-relay behavior but does not publish one universal SF6 port table; copying an older Street Fighter V list is not a supported fix.
When the ISP is part of the problem
If the router reports a private or carrier-grade address on its WAN side, you may not have a publicly reachable IPv4 endpoint. Ask the ISP whether inbound peer traffic is restricted and whether a public address or an alternative configuration is available. This is especially relevant when one household can play normally against many users but cannot connect directly to a particular friend.

Step 4: Separate network delay from PC frame-rate problems
On PC, unstable frame pacing can imitate online input delay. A game that repeatedly misses its frame-rate target may show late-looking reactions in offline training, so diagnose performance independently from the network.
Capcom’s PC troubleshooting sequence
- Confirm that the machine meets SF6’s minimum system requirements.
- Update Windows and the graphics driver.
- Review graphics-driver control-panel settings and the system’s power plan; avoid a power-saving mode that downclocks the GPU or CPU during play.
- Close unnecessary background applications, overlays, recording tools, browsers, and downloads.
- In Steam, verify the game’s installed files (the client’s “Verify integrity of game files” command).
- If frame rate remains unstable, lower SF6’s Quality setting to Low or Lowest, then restart the game if required for the change to take effect.
Use an offline control test
Enter training mode with no online search running. If the same sluggishness or hitching occurs offline, changing DNS, NAT, or Ethernet will not correct that symptom. If offline play is smooth but a relay match is not, return to the network-path checks instead.
Step 5: Diagnose the one-opponent or one-friend case
A failed custom room with one friend does not prove that your connection is broken. Capcom notes that a player-to-player timeout limited to one person can indicate a problem in the other player’s network environment.

- Each player should test a match against a different opponent or use a different online mode.
- Compare whether either player is on Wi‑Fi, behind a second router, using strict NAT, or connected through an ISP that filters inbound traffic.
- Both players should check UPnP and packet-filtering settings, changing only one variable at a time.
- Try the room again and note whether the pre-match indicator changes from relay to direct P2P.
If ranked and casual matches work while the same friend consistently produces a timeout, prioritize the two networks’ compatibility over reinstalling the game or changing DNS.

Understand the matchmaking modes and disconnection penalties
The official online manual lists three relevant modes:

Repeated intentional disconnections can result in penalties, including loss of matchmaking access. Do not deliberately quit matches to avoid an unfavorable relay indicator or to speed up troubleshooting. Gather evidence between sessions instead.

Frequent occurrences can result from NAT differences. Check both players’ NAT conditions, router layers, UPnP, and packet filtering. The code does not identify which player’s equipment is responsible by itself.

This represents a player-to-player connection timeout. When it occurs only with one friend, investigate that friend’s network as well as your own. When it occurs with every opponent, start again with the clean baseline and router checks.

Other communication errors
Write down the complete code and the point at which it appears—during search, room entry, the pre-match screen, or after a fight. The timing helps support staff distinguish matchmaking cancellation from an in-match connection loss.
Fixes that are often suggested but are not established here
Changing DNS
There is no supported evidence in the reviewed official guidance for a universal “best DNS” setting that removes SF6 input delay, relay connections, or matchmaking cancellations. DNS can affect name resolution, but it does not turn a strict NAT into an open one or stabilize an overloaded Wi‑Fi link. Treat a DNS change as an optional, reversible experiment—not a primary fix.
Assuming a global outage
The available official material does not establish one current, universal outage or a published outage duration for these symptoms. Check the game’s official service communications and your platform’s status when many unrelated online functions fail, but do not use an outage assumption to explain a relay indicator that appears only against one opponent.
Copying a Street Fighter V port list
Older port lists are not proof of the ports SF6 currently requires. Use the router, platform, and SF6 support documentation that applies to your setup; do not paste an unverified list into a firewall rule set.
Build a useful support report
If the problem continues after the baseline and targeted tests, provide evidence that lets support reproduce the condition:
- Exact error code and the screen or action where it appeared.
- Platform: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or another supported system.
- Mode: Ranked Match, Casual Match, or Custom Room.
- Whether every opponent is affected or only one friend.
- Wired Ethernet or Wi‑Fi, including whether the result changes when switching.
- Router NAT status, whether UPnP is enabled, and whether another router or mesh gateway is present.
- Whether the pre-match indicator showed relay or direct P2P.
- For PC, whether offline training is smooth, the graphics-driver and Windows versions, quality preset, and whether frame rate remains stable.
- Approximate time and region of the failed test, without guessing an outage cause.
Capcom’s support index directs players to the SF6 online manual, the Steam troubleshooting guide, and the support contact form. Include the observations above rather than saying only that the game “feels delayed.”
A practical decision path
- Is offline training stuttery? Fix PC performance first; network changes cannot repair missed frames.
- Is the online issue present against everyone? Restart the modem, router, and game, pause other traffic, and test wired Ethernet.
- Does the pre-match screen show relay? Inspect NAT, UPnP, filtering, and multiple-router arrangements on both sides.
- Does only one friend fail? Compare both players’ NAT and ISP conditions and test another opponent.
- Does an error recur? Record its exact code and timing, then send the complete platform and network report to support.
A wired test is the fastest way to remove Wi‑Fi as a variable, but it cannot fix a remote player’s network, a service-side outage, or unstable PC frame timing. The reliable approach is to identify which of those three layers—your local connection, the P2P path, or local rendering—is actually failing before making a permanent configuration change.
