Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat Movie Adaptations Explained: Which Games Do They Follow?

Short answer: most of these films adapt a franchise’s characters and mythology rather than retelling one numbered game. The 1995 Mortal Kombat comes closest to a specific game premise, using the original game’s inter-realm tournament. The 1994 Street Fighter is a loose, franchise-level adaptation; Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li has no established one-game source. The announced 2026 Street Fighter film uses the World Warrior Tournament, Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li, making it structurally closest to the Street Fighter II era without being officially described as a direct adaptation of Street Fighter II. The 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot adds the original character Cole Young, while Mortal Kombat II continues that film continuity.

What “based on the game” means for these movies

A fighting game usually supplies a cast, rivalries, special moves, settings and a broad conflict, but not a conventional film plot. A movie therefore has to decide how literally it will adapt the source. There are three useful levels of fidelity:

Direct adaptation of a particular game

The film follows a recognizable scenario, tournament structure or story campaign from one identified title. The 1995 Mortal Kombat is the clearest example in this group because its heroes enter an inter-realm martial-arts tournament for control of the universe, closely matching the premise established by the original game.

Franchise adaptation

The filmmakers use familiar characters and mythology but create a new plot. The 1994 Street Fighter falls here. Universal’s home-video description calls it “Based on the best-selling video game,” but does not identify a numbered game as the screenplay’s source.

Reimagining or reboot

The film preserves the franchise’s rules and characters while adding substantial new material or changing the continuity. The 2021 Mortal Kombat is in this category because Cole Young, its central MMA fighter, was created for the movie and does not come from the playable-game roster.

Street Fighter (1994): a franchise remix, not a numbered-game retelling

The 1994 film should be described as a loose adaptation of Street Fighter rather than as “the Street Fighter II movie.” Universal’s home-video synopsis uses the broad wording “Based on the best-selling video game.” That establishes a connection to the game franchise, but it does not say that the screenplay adapts one particular release.

Why its story does not map neatly to a game

The movie is built around Colonel William Guile and a military ensemble. Guile’s campaign against General Bison supplies the narrative spine, while characters such as Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Balrog, E. Honda and Zangief are fitted into that plot. This is substantially different from treating the arcade game’s selectable fighters as the protagonists of a shared, canonical campaign.

Because no authoritative source identifies a single game as the screenplay source, claims that the film directly adapts Street Fighter II, Street Fighter Alpha or another numbered entry go beyond what is established. The accurate description is a new action-comedy story using Street Fighter names, roles and imagery.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009): a character spin-off

This film narrows its focus to Chun-Li’s origin and conflict with Bison. It belongs to the Street Fighter setting, but available authoritative material does not tie it to one numbered game. Calling it a direct adaptation of Street Fighter II or Street Fighter Alpha would therefore imply a level of source specificity that has not been established.

What the title tells you

The emphasis is on one character rather than on a tournament roster. That makes it better understood as an original Chun-Li-centered interpretation of the franchise mythology. Familiar names and relationships provide continuity for fans, while the film supplies its own chronology and dramatic structure.

The announced 2026 Street Fighter: closest to the World Warrior era

Capcom announced the live-action project with Legendary in 2023, and filming was reported to have begun in 2025. Paramount’s official synopsis gives the clearest indication of its game influence: “Set in 1993, estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury.”

Why readers associate it with Street Fighter II

The World Warrior Tournament is the key clue. That tournament framework, together with Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li as the central trio, most closely evokes the classic Street Fighter II-era presentation of the series. It is reasonable to say the film draws inspiration from that period or uses a similar structure.

Why it is not yet accurate to call it a Street Fighter II adaptation

The official synopsis does not say “based on Street Fighter II,” nor does it promise a scene-by-scene or campaign-level retelling. The 1993 setting, the estrangement between Ryu and Ken, and Chun-Li’s role as recruiter indicate a newly written story. Until the filmmakers identify a specific game as the source, the precise wording is “a new Street Fighter film built around the World Warrior Tournament, with a setup closest to the Street Fighter II era.”

Mortal Kombat (1995): the clearest adaptation of a game premise

The 1995 film most closely follows the original Mortal Kombat game. Hulu’s catalog synopsis describes Liu Kang, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade as Earth’s representatives in “an ancient martial arts tournament where the greatest fighters from each realm battle for control of the universe.” That is the defining setup of the first game: champions from different realms compete in a tournament whose outcome determines Earthrealm’s fate.

What the film preserves

  • Inter-realm stakes: the tournament is not merely a sporting event; it is a conflict over the survival or domination of a realm.
  • Core playable characters: Liu Kang, Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade remain central heroes, joined by other recognizable fighters.
  • Mythic tournament progression: characters meet, form alliances and face increasingly dangerous opponents in a structure that translates naturally from an arcade fighting game.

Where the movie expands the game

A feature film needs connective scenes, personal motivations and a paced beginning, middle and end. The 1995 movie therefore rearranges and expands game lore rather than reproducing an arcade ladder exactly. It is best called a close adaptation of the original game’s premise and roster concept, not a literal transcription of every match.

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997): a film sequel without a single-game label

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation continues the 1995 movie’s story. It should be treated as a sequel to that film continuity, not automatically labeled a direct adaptation of Mortal Kombat II or another numbered game.

The sequel can draw on additional fighters, villains and mythology from the games, but the available authoritative descriptions do not establish one exact game as its sole screenplay source. The safest explanation is that it extends the movie’s version of Mortal Kombat while borrowing broadly from the game universe.

Mortal Kombat (2021): a reboot built around an original hero

The 2021 film deliberately resets the cinematic continuity. A Central Board of Film Certification summary calls it “inspired by the blockbuster video game franchise” and describes MMA fighter Cole Young being hunted by Sub-Zero at Shang Tsung’s direction.

Cole Young changes the adaptation category

Cole Young is an original movie protagonist, not a character imported from a particular game roster. His discovery of the dragon-marked champions gives the audience a viewpoint character who can learn the rules of Mortal Kombat. That device lets the film introduce Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Sonya Blade, Jax, Sub-Zero and Scorpion while telling a new story around them.

The film still uses recognizable game mythology: rival clans, supernatural abilities, Outworld’s threat, tournament selection and the conflict between Earthrealm and its enemies. Because those elements are reorganized around Cole and a new origin story, “reboot” or “reimagining inspired by Mortal Kombat” is more accurate than “adaptation of Mortal Kombat 9” or any other single installment.

Mortal Kombat II (2026): continuation first, game adaptation second

New Line Cinema’s official synopsis presents Mortal Kombat II as the next installment after Simon McQuoid’s 2021 film and says it is “based on the videogame created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.” That wording confirms the franchise source and its creators, but it does not identify one numbered game as the sole basis.

How to describe its relationship to the games

The sequel should be understood in two layers. In continuity terms, it follows the 2021 movie. In source terms, it continues to draw on the Mortal Kombat videogame franchise. Those statements can both be true: a film may continue an original cinematic storyline while using characters, settings and mythology that originated in the games.

Street Fighter versus Mortal Kombat: the adaptation differences

Question Street Fighter films Mortal Kombat films
Is one game named as the source? No for the 1994 and 2009 films. The 2026 project is not officially tied to one title. The 1995 film most closely matches the original game’s tournament premise. The 2021 film and 2026 sequel are described at franchise level.
What supplies the plot engine? Character rivalries and, in 2026, the World Warrior Tournament. An inter-realm tournament, realm survival and supernatural conflict.
How much original movie material is present? Extensive: Guile leads the 1994 story; the 2009 film creates its own Chun-Li-focused narrative. Extensive: the 2021 reboot centers on original character Cole Young; the 1997 sequel expands the 1995 continuity.
What continuity should viewers assume? Each released film is its own interpretation; the announced 2026 film is a new project. The 1995 and 1997 films form one continuity; the 2021 film starts another, followed by Mortal Kombat II.

How to identify a movie’s actual game source

  1. Look for an official statement naming a title. “Based on the videogame created by Ed Boon and John Tobias” establishes franchise authorship, not a particular numbered entry.
  2. Separate premise from plot. A tournament, character or setting may come from a game without the film adapting that game’s complete story.
  3. Check for original protagonists. A new lead such as Cole Young is strong evidence that the movie is reworking the mythology rather than retelling a game campaign.
  4. Map continuity separately from source material. A sequel can follow a previous movie and still be inspired by the games.
  5. Use qualified language when the source is broad. “Franchise adaptation,” “inspired by,” “draws on” and “closest in structure to” are more precise than assigning an unsupported numbered-game label.

Bottom line for each film

  • Street Fighter (1994): a loose adaptation of the franchise, built around an original Guile-led military plot.
  • Mortal Kombat (1995): the closest match to a specific game premise, adapting the original game’s inter-realm tournament concept.
  • Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997): a sequel to the 1995 movie, with no established one-game mapping.
  • Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009): a Chun-Li spin-off without a confirmed numbered-game source.
  • Mortal Kombat (2021): a reboot/reimagining that uses game mythology and adds original protagonist Cole Young.
  • Street Fighter (2026): a new World Warrior Tournament story closest to the Street Fighter II era, but not officially a direct adaptation of that game.
  • Mortal Kombat II (2026): a continuation of the 2021 film, officially based on the Ed Boon and John Tobias franchise rather than one named installment.
