Street Fighter is a Capcom fighting-game series that began in 1987, with Street Fighter II (1991) establishing the tournament structure and core cast most players recognize. The games follow fighters with distinct techniques, rivalries and faction conflicts; the films reuse those ingredients in separate continuities. For a clear starting map, follow Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li, then add Guile, Charlie Nash, M. Bison, Cammy and the newer generation introduced in Street Fighter 6.
The quickest way to understand the cast
Every Street Fighter character is easier to place when you separate three questions: what the person does in the story, how they fight, and which continuity you are watching. Ryu represents disciplined self-improvement; Ken is his flamboyant rival; Chun-Li combines investigation with protection of others. Guile and Charlie Nash make the military and intelligence conflict with Shadaloo understandable, while M. Bison embodies the recurring criminal-supernatural threat. Street Fighter 6 adds a large group of younger fighters without abandoning that global, style-driven identity.

Ryu: the series’ clearest protagonist
Ryu is the disciplined wandering martial artist at the center of Street Fighter’s ethos. His official Street Fighter 6 biography describes him as “Ever training”: he travels the world looking for true strength and worthy opponents rather than fame, money or political power. That motivation makes him the most reliable entry point for a new player. His matches are framed as practice and self-knowledge, not simply as steps toward a trophy.

He has confronted and overcome the Satsui no Hado, a destructive impulse associated with violent power. Overcoming it does not end his journey; he continues pursuing greater heights while trying to keep his strength under control. In practical terms, Ryu is the character through whom the series explains patience, fundamentals and the idea that mastery is never finished.

In films, Ryu’s importance depends on the adaptation. The announced 2026 live-action movie places him at the center alongside Ken and Chun-Li, but that is an adaptation choice rather than a rule that every Street Fighter story follows.
Ken Masters: Ryu’s rival, not his brother
Ken is Ryu’s closest rival and his more flamboyant counterpart. The pair are not brothers; the games present them as distinct fighters whose relationship is defined by competition, respect and contrasting personalities. Ryu is restrained and contemplative, while Ken is expressive, confident and eager to make his own mark.
Street Fighter 6 gives Ken a markedly different life situation from the carefree tournament fighter many players remember. His biography identifies him as a former U.S. national fighting champion and former vice president of the Masters Foundation. Accusations that he orchestrated a criminal plot force him into hiding, turning a rivalry story into one involving reputation, family interests and survival. The change explains why his appearance and circumstances in Street Fighter 6 differ from earlier installments without erasing his essential identity as Ryu’s counterpart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe 2026 film casts Noah Centineo as Ken and Andrew Koji as Ryu. Because the movie is its own continuity, its version of Ken should be judged by the film’s eventual plot rather than assumed to reproduce every game event.
Chun-Li: investigator, protector and fighter
Chun-Li is both an elite combatant and an investigation figure. In Street Fighter 6, she is described as a former high-kicking ICPO agent. She now looks after Li-Fen, a survivor of the Black Moon Incident, and runs kung-fu classes. Those responsibilities make her more than a tournament participant: she protects a vulnerable person, passes on her skills and remains connected to the consequences of large-scale criminal schemes.
When readers ask, “Is Chun-Li a cop?”, the precise answer is that she is a former ICPO agent in the current game biography, not a police officer whose only function is law enforcement. Her investigative background explains her connection to Shadaloo-related cases, while her teaching and guardianship show what she does after leaving that role.
Chun-Li was the title character of Capcom’s 2009 film project, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, with Kristin Kreuk announced for the part. The announced 2026 film instead presents her as one of a central trio with Ryu and Ken, played by Callina Liang. These are different adaptation emphases, not contradictory versions of one game timeline.
Guile and Charlie Nash: the military thread
Guile
Guile is a U.S. Air Force pilot whose game biography ties his mission to dismantling Shadaloo and avenging his friend Charlie. His motivation gives the series a military and intelligence perspective that complements Ryu’s personal search for strength and Chun-Li’s investigative work. Guile’s presence also shows that Street Fighter’s conflicts are not limited to formal tournaments: governments, covert operations and criminal networks shape the world around the fighters.

Charlie Nash
Charlie Nash is the connective tissue between Guile’s personal mission and the changing Shadaloo storyline. His fate and identity vary as the game continuity evolves, so it is safer to treat “Charlie” and “Nash” as a continuity-sensitive character thread than as one unchanging biography. The relationship still matters: Guile’s pursuit of justice begins with what happened to his friend.
Capcom’s 2009 film announcement cast Chris Klein as Charlie Nash. That casting belongs to the 2009 adaptation and should not be used to infer the character’s exact game status.
M. Bison and Shadaloo: the recurring threat
M. Bison is the recurring criminal and supernatural antagonist associated with Shadaloo and Psycho Power. Shadaloo functions as a network and organization rather than a single unchanging plot: membership, schemes and the status of its leader shift between game installments. Bison is therefore a continuity anchor, not a fixed real-world biography that every version repeats.
His presentation changes dramatically in film. The 1994 live-action adaptation makes him a theatrical military dictator, played by Raul Julia, and centers the story on a stylized conflict involving Guile. Capcom’s 2009 project announced Neal McDonough as Bison in a different story built around Chun-Li. The announced 2026 film’s final villain details should be treated as adaptation-specific until the production establishes them on screen.
Psycho Power explains why Bison sits at the intersection of crime drama and supernatural action. It also cautions against answering “Who is M. Bison?” with a single job title: he is simultaneously the face of Shadaloo’s power structure, a recurring opponent for several heroes and a source of the series’ most overtly fantastical threat.
Cammy, Balrog and Vega: Shadaloo-linked specialists
Cammy
Cammy’s Street Fighter 6 biography identifies her as a Delta Red special-forces member with a fated connection to Shadaloo. Her story is built around the tension between an official military role and a past tied to the organization she opposes. That history gives her a different angle on Bison from Guile’s avenger or Chun-Li’s investigator: Cammy has to define herself while confronting the source of her connection.
Balrog
Balrog is one of the prominent Shadaloo-linked fighters in the game mythology. He is best understood through affiliation and archetype: a professional boxer whose power and directness make him a dangerous enforcer within the criminal world. His film version is not a guaranteed translation of that game role. The 2009 project listed Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog.
Vega
Vega is another prominent Shadaloo-linked fighter, associated with an elaborate, highly mobile combat style and a distinctive sense of beauty. His function in the games is that of a dangerous specialist inside the larger organization, not a substitute for Bison as its central power. Taboo was announced as Vega in the 2009 film project, where screen time and characterization follow that film’s plot rather than the full game mythology.

- In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
- Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. The newer generation in Street Fighter 6
Street Fighter 6 is the current main-series reference point, set after Street Fighter III. Its roster broadens the world beyond the original World Warriors by giving younger fighters specific jobs, communities and cultural influences.
Luke
Luke is a PMC contractor who teaches mixed martial arts. That combination of private military work and instruction makes him a bridge between professional combat and civilian training, and positions him as one of the game’s contemporary entry points.
Jamie
Jamie is a Chinatown peacekeeper inspired by Yun and Yang. His role grounds the global roster in a local community: he is not simply searching for a tournament ranking but protecting a neighborhood while developing his own style.

Kimberly
Kimberly is Guy’s Bushinryu student, a prodigy whose love of 1980s pop culture is part of her identity. Her character combines inherited ninja technique with an openly modern, playful personality.
Marisa
Marisa is an Italian jewelry designer who claims ancient Greek warrior ancestry. The contrast between her profession and her self-image as a descendant of warriors is deliberate: Street Fighter uses occupations and personal obsessions to make each fighter readable before a match begins.
JP
JP heads an NGO credited with Nayshall’s prosperity. His public role suggests stability and development, while the broader game story asks players to examine the power behind that success. He demonstrates how Street Fighter 6 expands its conflicts beyond a simple hero-versus-villain tournament.
Games versus films: what carries over?
The games and movies share names, designs and broad conflicts, but they do not tell one continuous story. Use the following distinctions whenever a film detail seems to conflict with a game biography.
| Axis | Games | Films |
|---|---|---|
| Continuity | Long-running canon that evolves across installments; Street Fighter 6 is the current point after Street Fighter III. | Each film selects and rearranges game elements for its own plot. |
| Core focus | Playable fighters, rivalries, fighting styles and tournament or faction stories. | A limited ensemble and a single dramatic premise. |
| Ryu/Ken | Rival martial artists with complementary personalities and techniques. | Central co-leads in the announced 2026 film. |
| Chun-Li | Investigator, protector and playable fighter. | Lead in the 2009 project; co-lead in 2026. |
| Bison/Shadaloo | Recurring antagonist network with changing members and plots. | Adaptation-specific villain presentations. |
Street Fighter film chronology
1994 live-action film
The 1994 movie is a separate, highly stylized continuity centered on Guile and M. Bison. The Associated Press described it as a campy 1990s adaptation and contrasted its approach with the games’ tournament setup. It is best approached as a colorful action film that borrows names and concepts, not as a literal retelling of the original arcade story.
Rank #4
2009: The Legend of Chun-Li
Capcom’s 2008 announcement for the 2009 film project listed Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li, Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog, Neal McDonough as M. Bison, Taboo as Vega and Chris Klein as Charlie Nash, with a planned February 2009 North American release. The project foregrounds Chun-Li and rearranges the game cast around her origin and confrontation with Bison.
2026 live-action film
Capcom announced filming with Legendary Entertainment and listed Noah Centineo as Ken, Andrew Koji as Ryu and Callina Liang as Chun-Li, with an October 16, 2026 release date. Those are time-sensitive production facts: the cast and announced date identify the intended central trio, but they do not establish that the film follows the game’s current chronology or that every listed character keeps the same biography.
Who is the strongest Street Fighter character?
There is no single answer that works across gameplay and story. In competitive play, strength depends on the specific game version, balance update, player skill and matchup; a character who dominates one patch can be adjusted later. Story power is a different measure. Bison’s Psycho Power gives him supernatural authority, while Ryu’s ability to overcome the Satsui no Hado marks a major personal achievement. Neither fact creates a permanent, official ranking of every fighter.

A useful comparison asks what kind of strength you mean:
- Gameplay strength: compare a named game’s current balance, tournament results and matchup data.
- Narrative importance: Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li are the most dependable entry points because their rivalries and responsibilities recur across versions.
- Mission capability: Guile and Cammy bring military training, Chun-Li brings investigation and protection, and Shadaloo’s specialists bring organization-specific expertise.
- Supernatural threat: Bison is the clearest recurring danger because of Psycho Power and his control of Shadaloo.
That framework avoids turning a roster built around different goals into a misleading one-number ranking.
How to choose a starting point
- Start with Ryu to learn the series’ discipline-and-growth theme.
- Add Ken to see how a rival can share a foundation while expressing a different personality.
- Follow Chun-Li for the investigative and protective side of the world.
- Use Guile, Charlie Nash and Cammy to understand the Shadaloo conflict from military and intelligence perspectives.
- Read the Street Fighter 6 biographies for Luke, Jamie, Kimberly, Marisa and JP to see how the modern roster extends the setting.
- Watch the films as alternate continuities, beginning with the 1994 movie’s Guile/Bison focus, the 2009 project’s Chun-Li focus or the announced 2026 Ryu/Ken/Chun-Li trio according to the kind of adaptation you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Ryu and Ken brothers?
No. They are separate characters whose relationship is built around friendship, rivalry and contrasting personalities, not a biological sibling relationship.
Is Chun-Li a cop?
In the Street Fighter 6 biography, Chun-Li is a former ICPO agent. She now looks after Li-Fen and runs kung-fu classes, so “former investigator and protector” is more precise than simply calling her a police officer.

None is a one-to-one continuation of the game canon. The 1994 film is a campy Guile-and-Bison adaptation, the 2009 project centers on Chun-Li, and the announced 2026 film centers on Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li; each rearranges game elements for its own continuity.
Who is M. Bison?
M. Bison is the recurring leader associated with Shadaloo and Psycho Power. His exact presentation changes between game installments and films, so treat each version as continuity-specific.
The Bottom Line
Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li provide the clearest map of Street Fighter, while Guile, Charlie Nash, Cammy and M. Bison explain the Shadaloo conflict. Street Fighter 6 is the current game reference point, and the 1994, 2009 and announced 2026 films are separate adaptations rather than one shared timeline.
