Street Fighter Engine Explained: V Used Unreal Engine 4, 6 Uses RE ENGINE

Street Fighter V used Unreal Engine 4. Street Fighter 6 uses Capcom’s in-house RE ENGINE. So the answer to “Does Street Fighter use Unreal Engine?” depends on which entry you mean. The sourced comparison is clear for these two games, but it does not support saying that every Street Fighter title uses one engine.

Capcom describes Street Fighter 6 as its first fighting game developed with RE ENGINE. That change from Unreal Engine 4 to Capcom’s own technology is a development-history distinction, not a claim that one engine automatically makes a game better, faster or more attractive.

Game Engine What the published record establishes What it does not establish
Street Fighter V Unreal Engine 4 Epic Games’ 2016 Unreal Engine feature identifies the game as built with UE4 and explains Capcom’s development rationale. It does not establish that every other Street Fighter game uses UE4.
Street Fighter 6 RE ENGINE Capcom announced the engine choice in 2022, later called the game its first fighting title developed with RE ENGINE, and continues to identify RE ENGINE as Capcom’s in-house engine. It does not establish that all historical or future Street Fighter entries use RE ENGINE.

Why the answer changes between games

A game engine is the underlying development technology used to build and run a game’s systems. It can provide tools and code for rendering, animation, input, physics, audio, networking, asset management and editor workflows. A franchise does not have to keep the same engine from one numbered entry to the next. A studio can choose a different technology when its production goals, available tools or internal technology strategy change.

That is why “Street Fighter” is too broad a label for a one-word engine answer. The well-documented split here is between Street Fighter V and Street Fighter 6. Treating the franchise as if it had one permanent engine erases that change and makes the answer inaccurate.

Street Fighter V: Unreal Engine 4

What Epic’s documentation says

Epic Games’ official Unreal Engine feature, published in 2016, identifies Street Fighter V as a game “designed from the ground up using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 technology.” That is direct documentation of the engine used for Street Fighter V, rather than an inference based on visual appearance or a third-party compatibility list.

The same feature includes comments from producer Yoshinori Ono about why Capcom selected UE4. The tools and functions available in Unreal Engine matched what the team needed at the time. Using that technology allowed development resources to remain focused on game and battle design as well as network development, instead of requiring the team to build every foundational technology component itself.

What “used UE4” means

The statement identifies the technology foundation for Street Fighter V’s development. It does not mean that every individual system was supplied unchanged by Epic, or that Capcom had no proprietary code and tools. A commercial engine is normally extended and configured by the game studio. The reliable point is narrower and more useful: Street Fighter V was built with Unreal Engine 4 as its engine technology.

It also does not answer questions about other entries. The evidence for Street Fighter V should not be generalized to Street Fighter IV, spin-offs or later games without separate documentation for each title.

Street Fighter 6: Capcom’s RE ENGINE

Capcom’s announcement

In a Capcom USA announcement dated June 2, 2022, Capcom said Street Fighter 6 was being developed on its own RE Engine. Capcom’s later materials use the styling “RE ENGINE,” but both references identify the same Capcom technology rather than Unreal Engine 4.

The first Capcom fighting game on RE ENGINE

Capcom’s 2023 technical report describes Street Fighter 6 as the first fighting game developed with RE ENGINE. That wording is significant because it describes the engine transition in the context of Capcom’s fighting-game development, not merely as a marketing name attached to the finished product.

The report also describes a practical development problem. RE ENGINE did not initially have a feature suited to adjusting fighting-game character data, so the team created a dedicated tool called Fighter Tool. Character data is central to a fighting game: developers need to tune values and relationships repeatedly while implementing and balancing playable fighters. Capcom’s account shows that adopting an in-house engine involved building or adapting supporting tools for the specific needs of a fighting game.

What Capcom means by “in-house”

Capcom’s 2025 Online Integrated Report describes RE ENGINE as an in-house development engine used to create Capcom titles and says it supports multiple platforms. The report specifically names Street Fighter 6 among games released as launch titles for Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025. That is current evidence for how Capcom characterizes RE ENGINE and for Street Fighter 6’s place in that technology portfolio.

The platform reference should be read carefully. It confirms Capcom’s multi-platform description and the cited Switch 2 launch-title status; it is not a performance benchmark, a statement about identical settings on every platform or proof that all Capcom games use the engine.

What the sources do not prove That UE4 was used by every Street Fighter entry That RE ENGINE is used by every Street Fighter entry or that it guarantees superior visuals or gameplay

Does the engine determine how Street Fighter looks or plays?

Not by itself. An engine supplies technology and workflows, but the game team still creates the characters, stages, animation, rules, camera behavior, effects, online systems and presentation. The cited sources explain engine selection and tool development; they do not provide controlled comparisons of image quality, frame rate, input response or gameplay quality between UE4 and RE ENGINE.

Street Fighter 6 - PS4
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.

It is therefore unsafe to use the engine names as shorthand for a review verdict. “Street Fighter V runs on UE4” is a technical identification. “Street Fighter 6 looks better because RE ENGINE is better” is a separate conclusion that would require testing and evidence not established here.

How to check an engine claim for a specific Street Fighter game

  1. Identify the exact entry. Include the numbered game and, where relevant, the edition or platform. “Street Fighter” alone is not specific enough.
  2. Look for a developer or engine-owner statement. For Street Fighter V, Epic’s Unreal Engine feature directly names UE4. For Street Fighter 6, Capcom’s 2022 announcement directly names RE Engine.
  3. Check later technical material for context. Capcom’s 2023 technical report adds the “first fighting game” description and explains the Fighter Tool, which confirms that the engine choice involved specialized development work.
  4. Separate current engine information from franchise history. Capcom’s 2025 report supports the current description of RE ENGINE but does not rewrite the history of earlier games.
  5. Do not infer an engine from appearance alone. Similar lighting, animation or menus can result from art direction and production practices; they are not proof of a particular engine.

Common misconceptions

“Street Fighter uses Unreal Engine.”

This is only accurate when the subject is Street Fighter V, for which UE4 is documented. It is inaccurate when applied to Street Fighter 6, whose engine is RE ENGINE.

“Street Fighter 6 is still on Unreal because Street Fighter V was.”

The later game has a separate, explicit Capcom announcement naming RE Engine. A prior entry’s technology does not carry over automatically.

“RE ENGINE is just a new name for Unreal.”

Capcom describes RE ENGINE as its own in-house development engine. The available documentation treats it as Capcom technology, not as a renamed version of Unreal Engine 4.

“The first fighting game on RE ENGINE” means the first game Capcom made with it.

Capcom’s wording is narrower: Street Fighter 6 was the first fighting game developed with RE ENGINE. That does not claim it was Capcom’s first title of any genre on the engine.

“If one Capcom game uses RE ENGINE, every Capcom game does.”

Capcom’s 2025 report says RE ENGINE is used for Capcom titles and supports multiple platforms, but the cited material does not establish universal use across every Capcom release.

Why Capcom’s tool decision matters

The Fighter Tool detail provides a more informative picture than an engine label alone. Fighting games require frequent adjustment of character-specific data, and Capcom says the existing engine lacked a suitable feature for that task. Building a dedicated tool let the Street Fighter 6 team shape the in-house technology around the needs of this genre.

That example also explains why engine comparisons should include workflow, not just rendering. An engine can be valuable because its editors, data systems and integration options fit a team’s production process. Conversely, adopting an engine may require new tools when a genre has specialized requirements. Capcom’s account documents that trade-off without claiming that either engine is universally superior.

A concise timeline

  • 2016: Epic Games publishes a feature identifying Street Fighter V as built from the ground up with Unreal Engine 4 technology.
  • June 2, 2022: Capcom USA announces that Street Fighter 6 is being developed on Capcom’s own RE Engine.
  • 2023: Capcom’s technical report calls Street Fighter 6 the first fighting game developed with RE ENGINE and discusses the Fighter Tool for character-data adjustment.
  • June 2025: Capcom’s reporting cites Street Fighter 6 as a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title while describing RE ENGINE as an in-house, multi-platform engine.

The answer in one sentence

Street Fighter V uses Unreal Engine 4, while Street Fighter 6 uses Capcom’s in-house RE ENGINE; the evidence supports that game-by-game distinction, not a single engine for the entire franchise.
