Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are both one-on-one fighting-game series, but they promise very different experiences. Street Fighter is built around competitive match play, readable combat systems, player training, social spaces and organized esports. Mortal Kombat makes cinematic presentation, graphic finishing moves, story progression and assist characters central to its identity. That split began in the 1990s and remains clear in Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1.
If you want a fighting game focused on learning matchups and competing, Street Fighter is the closer fit. If you want an especially violent presentation, a movie-like campaign and a progression-heavy single-player structure, Mortal Kombat is the more obvious choice. Platform availability, edition contents and downloadable expansions should still be checked at purchase because they change over time.

How the two franchises developed different identities
Street Fighter established the competitive template
Capcom released the first Street Fighter as an arcade game in 1987. Street Fighter II followed in 1991, and Capcom credits its innovative battle system with generating mass excitement and helping establish the fighting-game genre. That arcade origin matters: the series became associated with short, repeatable matches in which players learn character tools, punish mistakes and improve through competition.

Capcom said in its 2023 Street Fighter 6 release announcement that the franchise had passed 50 million cumulative sales. Capcom Taiwan later reported 59 million Street Fighter series sales as of March 31, 2026. Those are different dated totals, so they should not be treated as competing measurements from the same reporting period.
Mortal Kombat made presentation part of the attraction
Mortal Kombat’s early identity was shaped by how visibly it depicted injury. The 1993 home releases became a landmark ratings controversy. The ESRB’s historical account records that Nintendo removed red blood from its version, while Sega released the original blood presentation with a Mature label. Sega executive Tom Kalinske described the decision this way:
“We released Mortal Kombat in its original form—in other words: you can see the blood in it—but we also clearly rated the game.”

That choice helped define Mortal Kombat as the fighting series that made shock, gore and age-rating discussion part of its public identity. The distinction is not simply cosmetic. Fatalities, character deaths and explicit injury are designed as signature moments, whereas Street Fighter’s presentation generally keeps the emphasis on the contest itself.
The biggest gameplay difference: what each game asks you to do
Street Fighter 6 emphasizes learning, competition and social play
Capcom’s description of Street Fighter 6 places several kinds of participation side by side. In World Tour, you create an avatar and travel through the Street Fighter universe. Battle Hub provides a social space for interacting with other players. The game also offers controller input options aimed at beginners as well as experienced players, along with audio accessibility settings.
Those features create a clear learning path. A newcomer can spend time in a structured single-player environment, experiment with an input scheme that suits their experience, then move into shared online spaces. A competitive player can use the same game as a platform for ranked practice and organized events. Capcom’s Pro Tour further connects the game to esports competition.
This does not mean every Street Fighter entry has identical tutorials, controls or modes. It means Street Fighter 6 deliberately presents accessibility, learning and competition as parts of the same product.

Mortal Kombat 1 adds cinematic progression and partner assists
The official Mortal Kombat 1 FAQ foregrounds a different mix. Its cinematic Story mode presents the campaign as a major attraction, while Invasions provides a single-player progression mode. For direct matches, players can choose Ranked Kombat League, Kasual Versus, King of the Hill, private matches or local Versus. The FAQ also documents crossplay and rollback netcode.
Its defining combat addition is the Kameo Fighter system. Kameo Fighters are partner characters selected separately from the main roster; they assist during matches and expand the possible combinations available to the player. The official FAQ describes them as “a unique roster of partner characters to assist during matches, creating expanded gameplay possibilities for players.” In practical terms, choosing a main fighter and choosing a Kameo are separate decisions, so the matchup includes an extra layer of team construction.
Street Fighter 6 also has substantial single-player and social content, and Mortal Kombat 1 also supports serious online competition. The useful distinction is one of emphasis: Street Fighter 6 foregrounds learning spaces and a competitive community, while Mortal Kombat 1 foregrounds cinematic narrative, assist-partner variety and progression systems.
Which franchise is more violent?
Mortal Kombat is the more violent franchise by a wide margin. The ESRB rates Mortal Kombat 1 M for Mature 17+ for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity and Strong Language. The rating summary specifically describes Fatalities involving impalement, crushed bones, gunshots, dismemberment, stabbing, burning and explosions.
Street Fighter is still a fighting game in which characters attack one another, but the material supplied here does not establish a current ESRB descriptor for Street Fighter 6. It is therefore more accurate to describe Street Fighter as competition-focused and less graphically presented than Mortal Kombat than to claim that it has no violence or to assign it a particular rating without checking the relevant regional record.
For families, streamers and players who want to avoid explicit gore, this is the most consequential difference. Mortal Kombat’s finishing moves are not an incidental effect that appears once in the campaign; they are a recognizable part of the series’ design and marketing identity.
Are the games equally difficult to learn?
There is no reliable universal answer that one entire franchise is harder. Difficulty depends on the specific installment, the character, the control scheme, the opponent and whether the goal is finishing a story or competing online.

- Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
- Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
- Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
- In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
- Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.
What the documented features suggest about Street Fighter 6
Street Fighter 6 explicitly offers multiple controller input options for beginners and experienced players, plus audio accessibility settings. Those choices can lower the barrier to entering matches and give players more ways to practice. They do not remove the long-term challenge of learning spacing, timing, matchups and decision-making, and the supplied material does not provide a controlled difficulty comparison against Mortal Kombat 1.

Mortal Kombat 1 asks players to understand both their main character and a separately selected Kameo Fighter. That creates additional possibilities as well as additional decisions. A player who enjoys experimenting with combinations may find the system engaging; someone who wants to learn one character in isolation may prefer a simpler starting plan.
The fairest conclusion is practical rather than absolute: Street Fighter 6 advertises more explicit onboarding and control flexibility, while Mortal Kombat 1 introduces a partner-assist layer and wraps learning in a cinematic and progression-based structure. Neither fact proves that every player will find one game easier.
Street Fighter 6 versus Mortal Kombat 1 for single-player players
| If your priority is… | Better match | Why |
|---|---|---|
| An avatar-led journey through the series’ world | Street Fighter 6 | World Tour lets you create an avatar and travel through the Street Fighter universe. |
| A movie-like fighting-game campaign | Mortal Kombat 1 | The official FAQ identifies a cinematic Story mode as a core feature. |
| Repeatable progression outside a traditional story | Mortal Kombat 1 | Invasions is a dedicated single-player progression mode. |
| A social space built around the game | Street Fighter 6 | Battle Hub is designed for social interaction and shared activity. |
| Trying different assist combinations | Mortal Kombat 1 | Kameo Fighters are selected separately and assist the main fighter. |
These are mode-structure differences, not a claim that one game has more total hours. The amount of content and the value of downloadable expansions can vary by edition and platform.
Online, local and competitive play
Street Fighter’s competitive ecosystem
Street Fighter’s arcade roots make repeatable head-to-head play central to its identity. In Street Fighter 6, Battle Hub supports social interaction, and Capcom positions the game within the Capcom Pro Tour. That combination suits players who want to move from practice to public matches and eventually follow organized competition.
Mortal Kombat’s range of match formats
Mortal Kombat 1 lists a broad set of online and offline options: Ranked Kombat League for competitive play, Kasual Versus for less formal matches, King of the Hill, private matches and local Versus. Its FAQ also documents crossplay and rollback netcode. Crossplay availability can depend on platform and implementation details, so confirm the current support for the systems you own.
The difference is not “competitive versus casual.” Both support both audiences. Street Fighter’s identity is more tightly associated with the competitive fighting-game tradition, while Mortal Kombat combines those formats with story, Invasions and Kameo-based experimentation.

How the tone changes the buying decision
Choose Street Fighter 6 if you want readable competition
- You want the series most closely associated with arcade competition and organized fighting-game play.
- You prefer a game that highlights player learning, social interaction and controller options.
- You want World Tour and Battle Hub alongside head-to-head matches.
- You would rather avoid a design built around graphic Fatalities.
Choose Mortal Kombat 1 if you want spectacle and a campaign
- You want an M-rated presentation with explicit blood, gore and intense violence.
- You value a cinematic Story mode and the Invasions progression structure.
- You like building combinations around a main character and a separately selected Kameo Fighter.
- You want ranked, casual, local and online formats, including the features documented for crossplay and rollback netcode.
Check before either purchase
- Confirm that your console or PC is supported by the exact edition you are considering.
- Read what the base edition includes, especially when character packs or expansions are sold separately.
- Review your region’s age-rating information, particularly for Mortal Kombat 1.
- Check current prices rather than relying on launch or FAQ SRPs.
What the franchises represent in fighting-game history
Street Fighter’s historical importance comes from turning a precise arcade battle system into a durable competitive language. The series’ 1987 beginning and Street Fighter II’s 1991 breakthrough established a model in which the pleasure comes from mastering a roster and testing that mastery against another person.
Mortal Kombat’s historical importance is different. It demonstrated how a fighting game could become a broader entertainment event through digitized presentation, shock value, character-driven fiction and controversy over content ratings. The early blood debate was not separate from the franchise’s identity; it helped define how the public understood it.
That is why the two series can share a genre while serving different expectations. A player may enjoy both, but the reasons for choosing them are not interchangeable: Street Fighter’s appeal is centered on the contest and the process of improvement, while Mortal Kombat’s appeal combines the contest with spectacle, story and finishing-move theater.

- Decide your content boundary. If graphic dismemberment, impalement, burning or similar Fatality imagery is unacceptable, do not choose Mortal Kombat 1 merely because you want a fighting game.
- Decide whether you want a campaign or a competitive routine. Pick Street Fighter 6 for World Tour, Battle Hub and its explicitly documented learning-oriented options; pick Mortal Kombat 1 for cinematic Story mode and Invasions.
- Decide whether assist partners sound appealing. Mortal Kombat 1’s Kameo system adds a separate partner choice to each match. If that sounds like needless complexity, start with Street Fighter 6’s main-character focus.
- Verify the platform and edition. Street Fighter 6 supports PS4 as well as newer systems; Mortal Kombat 1’s documented console list starts with PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch. Compare the exact edition, included content and current regional price.
- Use the available onboarding tools. In Street Fighter 6, select the controller input option and accessibility settings that fit your needs. In Mortal Kombat 1, begin with the story or Invasions content before moving into ranked or cross-platform play.
For most readers, the shortest recommendation is straightforward: buy Street Fighter 6 for a competition-first game with prominent learning and social features; buy Mortal Kombat 1 for a mature, cinematic fighter whose Kameo system and progression modes sit alongside its famously graphic Fatalities.
