“stv673u.dll was not found” and other errors
You may see one of these messages when starting an old camera application:
- “This application failed to start because stv673u.dll was not found.”
- “The file stv673u.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: stv673u.dll.”
- “Error loading stv673u.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because stv673u.dll is missing from your computer.”
The 60-second answer is simple: stv673u.dll is a 32-bit component of the old STMicroelectronics ST-VIBU STV673 USB webcam driver. Reinstall the complete camera package, not an isolated DLL, then check whether the camera and its 32-bit software can still work on your version of Windows.

What stv673u.dll is
stv673u.dll is identified as ST-VIBU STV673 Camera Driver (32-bit DLL). It was shipped with the ST-VIBU STV673 Camera Driver, associated with older STV0673/STV673 USB cameras and various OEM-branded webcams.
Historical packages commonly included:
stv673u.dllstv673tg.dllstv673.sysstv673.inf- Camera capture components
- TWAIN components
- Configuration files
That package layout matters. The DLL is only one part of the driver and capture stack. Copying it into a Windows folder does not install the device driver, register the camera, provide the .inf instructions, or restore the capture software.

The camera may have been sold under names including ZoomCam, PC-EYE, or Ezonics P10U, but the filename alone cannot identify the exact brand. Confirm the hardware ID before choosing a package.
stv673u.dll is not:
- A Windows system DLL
- A DirectX component
- A .NET component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A universal webcam driver
The identified file is 32-bit. A 32-bit camera application may need it even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Why the error appears
The most common causes are:
- The original camera driver installation is incomplete or damaged.
- The camera application was uninstalled, but an old shortcut or startup entry remains.
- Antivirus software quarantined a legacy driver component.
- The wrong camera package or architecture was installed.
- Windows rejected the obsolete driver because of signing or compatibility restrictions.
- A system migration, disk cleanup, backup restore, or recent software change removed part of the installation.
- The error actually concerns a dependency of
stv673u.dll, not the DLL itself.
“The specified module could not be found” is particularly misleading. Windows may find stv673u.dll but fail to load a required companion file or dependency.
Before changing anything, note the exact program showing the message. Check the error window, desktop shortcut, Start menu entry, and Installed apps. If the camera is still connected, identify it in Device Manager.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete camera package
This is the safest and most likely solution.
If you have the original disc or installer
- Disconnect the camera.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the old camera application or webcam software.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall if the installation is clearly damaged.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original camera installer.
- Follow its USB connection instructions. Some old installers expect the camera to remain disconnected until prompted.
- Restart again.
- Reconnect the camera and test the original capture application.
If the installer offers separate camera, TWAIN, capture, or viewer components, install the complete package. The application may depend on more than stv673u.dll.
For a repair rather than a removal, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the camera software, and choose Repair or Change if that option exists.
For newer desktop programs, Microsoft also provides repair controls at Settings > Apps > Installed apps > [program] > Advanced options > Repair. The exact options vary by application. See Microsoft’s repair guidance.

Public archives show historical STV0673 packages, but they do not establish that every download is authentic, safe, or compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11. There is no verified current official STMicroelectronics download page for this exact legacy package.
Use the original camera manufacturer’s media or a package that can be independently verified. Scan downloaded files before opening them. Do not select a package merely because its filename matches. Match the camera model, hardware ID, Windows architecture, and application.
After installation, check whether the package restored its .inf, .sys, capture, and TWAIN files. A DLL-only download is not an equivalent repair.

How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if:
- The application starts without the
stv673u.dllmessage. - The camera appears in the application’s video source list.
- Device Manager no longer shows an unknown imaging device.
- The camera produces an image instead of a blank preview or initialization error.
If the application still reports a missing module, continue with the identification and dependency checks below rather than copying another DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 2: Identify the camera and hardware ID
The hardware ID helps distinguish the correct driver from a similarly named package.
- Connect the webcam.
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, Imaging devices, or Other devices.
- Right-click the camera and choose Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Select Hardware Ids from the Property list.
- Record the displayed values.
Historical STV0673 packages identify USB hardware such as:
VID_0553&PID_0001VID_0553&PID_0002
These IDs are useful clues, not proof that every camera with the same identifier accepts every archived package. If Device Manager shows a different ID, do not force an STV673 driver simply because the DLL name looks similar.
If the device is listed as an unknown USB or imaging device:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click it in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers to remove driver software, select that option only when you are deliberately removing the incorrect package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct complete package.
- Return to Device Manager and check the device status.
Microsoft’s Device Manager driver guidance explains the supported update and reinstall process.
Manually browse to the extracted driver folder only when you have verified that its .inf file matches the camera. Do not point Device Manager at a folder containing only stv673u.dll.
Hunting through old hardware IDs and matching multiple driver packages can be tedious, particularly after a clean Windows installation. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale or missing drivers; its free scan shows what it found, while the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and the original camera package remains the correct source when this specific legacy driver is required.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Legacy camera drivers can trigger security software because they are old, unsigned, or use outdated installation methods. Do not immediately disable antivirus protection.

Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from the original camera media or a source you can verify.
- The path belongs to the expected camera installation.
- You know the camera application requires it.
- The installer and surrounding package have been scanned.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can expose the system if the detection was genuine. Its Protection History guidance explains the available actions.

If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined and reinstall the complete package from trusted media. Restoring one DLL from quarantine may leave the installation incomplete.
Fix 4: Check the 32-bit application and Windows architecture
The file is identified as a 32-bit driver component. That does not mean it belongs in C:WindowsSystem32. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit Windows components. Neither directory is a general-purpose storage location for third-party camera DLLs.
Check the application:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate the camera or capture program.
- Check its installation path and publisher information.
- Look for a 32-bit program under a location such as
Program Files (x86). - Launch the program from its installed shortcut rather than an old copied executable.
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but its old camera driver still has to be compatible with the operating system. Windows may reject an obsolete kernel driver even when the user-mode DLL is present.
If the installer refuses to run:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Try a compatibility mode for an older Windows version.
- Select Run this program as an administrator only if required.
- Run the installer again.
Compatibility mode cannot make an incompatible kernel driver safe or functional. If the camera still fails, the practical solution may be an older supported PC or a virtual machine using a compatible legacy Windows environment.
Fix 5: Remove an orphaned application or startup entry
Sometimes the camera was removed years ago, but a shortcut, scheduled task, or startup entry still launches its capture software.
If you no longer use the camera:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the old camera application.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Disable an entry clearly belonging to the obsolete camera software.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the shortcut or game that previously produced the error.
Do not delete random startup entries merely because their names are unfamiliar. If the old application is still needed, reinstall it first, then remove it cleanly through its uninstaller.

If the error began immediately after a driver or software change, System Restore may help:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the change.
- Review the affected programs.
- Start the restore process.
Microsoft documents this process in its System Restore guidance.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption
Use Windows repair commands only when other symptoms suggest damaged Windows components, such as multiple system errors, failed updates, or unrelated applications also refusing to start. These commands do not reinstall a third-party STV673 camera driver.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the complete camera package.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Microsoft provides DISM repair instructions and SFC documentation.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is an incomplete camera package. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues; its free scan identifies problems, while the full version performs repairs. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the specific camera software.
Windows Features and Visual C++ redistributables
Do not expect Turn Windows features on or off to install stv673u.dll.
You can open it by:
- Pressing
Win+R. - Typing
optionalfeatures. - Pressing Enter.
This list controls Windows components, not the ST-VIBU camera package. Enabling random legacy features will not recreate the camera’s .inf, .sys, TWAIN, or configuration files.
Likewise, stv673u.dll is identified as a camera-driver DLL, not a Visual C++ runtime. Do not install a redistributable as the primary fix unless the error separately names a file such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll. If it does, use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ redistributable downloads and match the application’s architecture.
Why copying the DLL is usually wrong
Random DLL download sites sites create several problems:
- The file may contain malware.
- The build may be the wrong version.
- The file may be the wrong architecture.
- The download may omit required companion files.
- Copying it into a Windows folder may create version conflicts.
- The camera driver still may not install or load.
Do not copy stv673u.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 merely because a download instruction says to do so. Install the complete camera package into its intended application and driver locations.
Do not substitute stv673tg.dll for stv673u.dll. Historical packages contain both files, and their roles are not interchangeable.
Why regsvr32 is usually not the answer
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide self-registration entry points, especially registry-based ActiveX or COM components. It is not a universal repair command.
Recommended Free Tools
There is no evidence that this camera driver DLL is self-registering. Running:
regsvr32 stv673u.dll
may produce another error, change nothing, or mislead you into thinking the driver is installed. It does not install the camera’s .inf, kernel driver, capture components, or TWAIN files.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains when the command applies. For this file, reinstall the camera package instead.

When to replace the webcam
A successful DLL restoration does not guarantee that the webcam will work on Windows 10 or Windows 11. Historical STV0673 packages target Windows 9x, Me, 2000, and XP-era systems. Current compatibility, driver signing, USB behavior, and 64-bit support are not established.
Recommended Free Tools
Replace the camera when:
- The installer cannot run even in compatibility mode.
- Device Manager rejects the driver.
- Windows reports that the driver is unsigned or incompatible.
- The camera appears but produces no usable image.
- The old application depends on unsupported capture components.
- You no longer have trustworthy installation media.
- A modern UVC webcam meets your needs.
A modern UVC webcam normally uses Windows’ built-in camera support and avoids this obsolete package chain. If preserving the old camera is important, use an older compatible PC or an isolated virtual-machine setup rather than weakening Windows security or downloading an unknown DLL.
FAQ
Is stv673u.dll part of Windows?
No. It belongs to the old ST-VIBU STV673 camera driver package supplied with certain STV0673/STV673 USB webcams and OEM products.
Is stv673u.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The identified component is 32-bit. A 32-bit camera application may require it on 64-bit Windows, but the related kernel driver must also support the operating system.
Can I download only stv673u.dll?
That is not the recommended repair. Restore the complete driver and camera application package from original or verifiable media.
Does Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Not normally. No evidence identifies a specific Visual C++ package as the source of this camera DLL. Install a redistributable only when the error separately names a missing Visual C++ runtime file.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Usually no. regsvr32 does not install a camera driver and there is no evidence that this DLL exposes the required self-registration entry point.
Why does the error appear after uninstalling the camera?
The main software may have been removed while a shortcut, startup entry, or capture program remains. Uninstall the orphaned entry or reinstall the complete package before removing it cleanly.
What if the DLL exists but Windows still says it cannot be found?
The message may refer to a missing dependency. Reinstall the complete package, check antivirus quarantine, verify the application architecture, and inspect the camera in Device Manager.
Is an old STV673 webcam worth restoring?
Restore it if you have the original package and need the hardware. If Windows rejects the driver or the camera only works with obsolete software, replacing it with a modern UVC webcam is usually the more reliable fix.
