Use the main Early Access build, set a checked-on date, and treat every route as version-sensitive. Subnautica 2 supports solo play and four-player co-op, and its early progression now revolves around scanning creatures with the Bioscanner, visiting Biolabs for Biomod unlocks, solving wreck traversal and oxygen puzzles, and following environmental hints such as the Silver dialogue. This guide is based on the official game information and updates available through October 13, 2026; the Buddy System Hotfix 2 was dated October 6, 2026. Exact recipes, coordinates, oxygen thresholds and some mode details can change, so verify those in your current main-branch build rather than importing assumptions from the first Subnautica.
What Subnautica 2 Early Access includes
Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure on a new alien world. You explore, gather resources, build bases, use tools, investigate wrecks and progress through an unfolding story. Unknown Worlds describes the game as playable alone or with up to three friends, making four players the supported co-op group size.

Early Access is the important qualifier. The game is being expanded while players are playing it, so systems, balance, locations and interfaces can change between patches. The official roadmap describes updates ranging from focused improvements and hotfixes to larger expansions, with plans for more biomes, creatures, resources, tools, vehicles and story content. Those are plans rather than guaranteed dates or a fixed final feature list.
The May 14, 2026 launch announcement set a launch price of US$29.99 and said one purchase includes additions, updates and hotfixes through the 1.0 launch and beyond. Regional prices, taxes, storefront availability and the current price can differ; check the Steam, Epic Games Store or Xbox/Microsoft Store listing for your region before buying.

Choose a stable way to start
Your first decision affects how reliable this guide will be. For a normal survival playthrough, use the current main branch, choose the mode shown in your current menu, and record the build date before following any location-specific advice.
| Choice | What is established | Best fit | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Survival | Traditional Survival was available at Early Access start. | Players who want the resource, exploration and danger loop. | The complete current rule set should be read in the in-game mode description. |
| Creative | Creative was also available at Early Access start. | Testing construction, learning spaces or exploring without the normal survival pressure. | Do not assume its restrictions and progression match Survival; verify the current menu text. |
| Solo | Supported as a single-player experience. | Players who want to set their own pace and make every exploration decision themselves. | There is no second player to carry resources, watch an oxygen route or confirm a puzzle clue. |
| Co-op | Up to four players total, including the host. | Groups that want shared exploration, construction and problem-solving. | Agree on communication and save ownership. The October hotfix included a voice-chat detection fix, showing that communication systems can also change. |
| Main branch | The normal public build and the default target for general guides. | Players who value the most stable save and instructions. | A patch can still alter recipes, hints, interfaces or resource behavior, so keep the checked-on date visible. |
| Experimental branch | An opt-in preview branch on Steam and Xbox for upcoming content and issue detection. | Players willing to test unfinished changes before they reach the main build. | It can contain serious or game-breaking bugs, and its saves cannot be imported or exported between Experimental and main. |
The official modes help article was updated April 16, 2026 and described Custom mode as planned. That information predates the current date, so do not promise that Custom is available until your in-game mode menu confirms it.
How to survive the opening hours
No official source currently supplies a complete first-hours route, a full recipe tree, exact resource coordinates or universal oxygen and depth thresholds. That means a good opening plan is a decision process rather than a made-up sequence of waypoints.
1. Confirm your build before you commit to a route
- Start on the main branch unless you intentionally want to test Experimental content.
- Write down the build number or patch date shown by the game or storefront. Use that date when you bookmark a guide or share a route with co-op partners.
- Read the current descriptions for Survival, Creative and any additional modes before creating a world. Menu wording is safer than relying on an April description that may have changed.
- In co-op, decide who owns the world, how you will label shared locations and how you will communicate when one player finds a new clue.
2. Treat information gathering as your first progression task
Scan creatures and notable objects with the Bioscanner instead of rushing past them. Creature scans are not just a completion activity: the July 8, 2026 Adaptive Measures update says scans provide additional passive Biomod slots. A scan can therefore improve your progression even when it does not immediately produce a visible item.
Keep a simple record of unfamiliar names, landmarks and locked or incomplete interactions. Early Access interfaces and rewards can be revised, and a short note helps you distinguish a genuinely inaccessible location from one that changed after a patch.
3. Make exploration reversible
When you enter an unfamiliar area, identify a clear return landmark before going deeper. Wrecks now include traversal and oxygen puzzles, so the safest approach is to make progress in short, repeatable sections rather than betting an entire run on a new corridor. If a door, button or reward presentation looks different from an older video, trust the current visual language and current objective instead of copying the old input sequence.
4. Use hints instead of guessing resource locations
The Adaptive Measures update added Silver hint dialogue near Silver areas. Listen to that dialogue and inspect the surrounding environment rather than assuming a coordinate from an older guide is still valid. The patch notes confirm the hint system but do not publish a complete Silver map or an optimized gathering route.

5. Spend time at Biolabs
Biolabs are the other major early progression anchor. The July update says players can unlock up to six Biomods from Biolabs and that early Biomod progression was smoothed. Once you reach a Biolab, examine the available unlocks, note which requirement is missing, and return with the relevant information or materials when the current build tells you what is needed.
How Biomods and scanning work together
Biomods are the upgrade system you should plan around during exploration. The dated mechanics are clear even though the complete current list of recipes and effects is not: Biolabs provide up to six Biomod unlocks, while scanning creatures with the Bioscanner opens additional passive Biomod slots.
A practical Biomod loop
- Carry and use the Bioscanner. Scan creatures as you encounter them, including species that seem ordinary. The official update specifically ties creature scans to extra passive slots.
- Mark every Biolab. A Biolab is a progression destination, not merely scenery. Record its position relative to a recognizable landmark so a co-op partner can find it later.
- Review the Biomod screen after each meaningful discovery. A new scan or Biolab visit may change what is available. Do not assume the interface has the same slot count or unlock order as an older build.
- Separate active and passive decisions. The update distinguishes Biomod unlocks from passive slots. Read the current labels carefully before replacing an effect or spending a scarce requirement.
- Recheck after patches. “Up to six” describes the documented Biolab unlock ceiling in the July update, not a promise that every future build will use the same number, costs or ordering.
There is no supported fastest Biomod route in the available official notes. A route that claims exact unlock order, exact material counts or a universal best build needs to identify the build on which it was tested. Until then, prioritize scanning broadly and learning what each Biolab currently offers.
Where to find Silver in Subnautica 2
The current official evidence supports a hint-led answer, not a coordinate list. The Adaptive Measures update added a Silver hint dialogue line near Silver areas. When that line appears, search the nearby environment methodically and record the landmark for future trips.

Silver search checklist
- Listen for the Silver-specific hint dialogue instead of dismissing ambient guidance.
- Scan nearby creatures and objects while you search; creature scans can contribute to passive Biomod slots.
- Use a distinctive terrain feature, wreck edge or base position as your return marker.
- Gather enough for the immediate upgrade you are pursuing, then return and confirm that the current recipe or requirement still matches your notes.
- If the expected vein or pickup is absent, reload the current main-build information before assuming the resource was removed. The October 6 hotfix included a Scanner Station resource-accuracy fix, so resource-facing systems are demonstrably subject to patch changes.
The official patch notes do not establish exact Silver coordinates, a fixed respawn rule, a quantity per deposit or the fastest route. Treat map pins from an older build as leads to verify, not as guarantees.
Wrecks: solve the oxygen problem before the puzzle
Wreck exploration was specifically revised in Adaptive Measures. The update added or improved traversal and oxygen puzzles, clarified door and button visual language, and adjusted puzzle rewards. These changes make wrecks a navigation and risk-management challenge as much as a key hunt.
Before entering
- Know which landmark leads back to open water or your previous safe point.
- Leave enough time and oxygen margin to reverse your route; the game does not publish one universal safe duration for every wreck.
- Notice the door and button visual language at the entrance. The July update says those cues were revised, so current visuals are more reliable than screenshots from an earlier build.
- If you are in co-op, assign one player to remember the return path while another investigates a branch.
Inside the wreck
- Take the first corridor slowly and identify the return junction.
- Read each door, button and traversal cue before committing to a side path.
- When a puzzle opens a new route or reward, pause and update your landmark notes.
- Do not assume every reward is on the shortest-looking path; the update changed puzzle rewards and traversal presentation.
- Exit and resupply when your return route becomes uncertain. A failed puzzle attempt is cheaper than losing an entire exploration run.
Because no official source gives a universal oxygen threshold or complete wreck map, avoid guides that present one number as safe for every location. The correct margin depends on the current build, your route and how many puzzle detours you make.

Solo or four-player co-op?
Both formats are first-class options. Solo gives one player complete control over pace, inventory decisions and exploration order. Co-op lets up to four players divide attention between scanning, navigation, construction and puzzle solving, but it also introduces coordination overhead.
Solo advantages and risks
- You can stop to read every clue without negotiating the next objective.
- Your landmark notes and resource decisions remain consistent.
- Every oxygen return, scan and material haul depends on one player, so conservative routes matter more.
Co-op advantages and risks
- Players can spread out to scan creatures, identify landmarks and investigate separate wreck branches.
- One player can remember a route while another works a puzzle.
- Groups need a shared naming system for bases, Biolabs, Silver hints and wreck entrances.
- Decide who hosts and how you will handle a player who disconnects. Do not assume host and client behavior is identical in every Early Access system.
- Use voice communication deliberately. Buddy System Hotfix 2 on October 6, 2026 included a voice-chat detection fix, illustrating why a communication problem may be patch-related rather than user error.
For a first run, choose solo if you prefer a controlled pace; choose co-op if your group will communicate clearly and agree not to split so far that nobody can describe the return route.
Should you use the Experimental branch?
Experimental is a testing branch, not a free performance upgrade. Unknown Worlds describes it as an opt-in preview for upcoming content and issue detection before changes reach the main build. It can contain serious bugs, including game-breaking failures, and saves are not compatible between Experimental and main.
Use main when
- You want the most dependable save for a long Survival world.
- You are following a general guide whose instructions need to match the public build.
- You are playing with friends who do not all want to troubleshoot unfinished systems.
Use Experimental when
- You understand that a preview build can break a world or invalidate a route.
- You are willing to report issues and restart if necessary.
- You keep Experimental progress separate and never expect to move that save into or out of main.
How access works
- Steam: open the game’s beta or version options and select the Experimental branch. The exact label can change with the client, so read the current option before confirming.
- Xbox: use Xbox Insider Hub for the Experimental preview. The August announcement stated that access required age 18 or older plus ownership of the game or an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription; confirm current eligibility before enrolling.
- Protect your saves: treat each branch as a separate environment. Do not copy, import or export a save between Experimental and main.
- Return deliberately: if you switch back to main, start or load a main-branch save rather than expecting Experimental progress to appear.
Unless a section is explicitly dated and labeled Experimental, this guide assumes the main branch.

Patch currency is part of survival planning. The official roadmap says updates can be focused improvements, hotfixes or larger expansions and warns that the roadmap may change. A feature described as planned is not a release promise.

Record the build date at the top of your own notes. The October 6, 2026 Buddy System Hotfix 2 fixed voice-chat detection and Scanner Station resource accuracy. Those are small-sounding changes with direct effects on co-op communication and resource-finding confidence, which is why a date matters even when you are not chasing new story content.
What to recheck after every update
- Mode availability, especially any mode previously described as planned.
- Biolab Biomod unlocks, passive slot counts and scan requirements.
- Silver hint wording and the areas where it appears.
- Wreck door, button and traversal cues.
- Scanner Station results and any resource labels.
- Voice chat detection and other co-op communication behavior.
- Experimental enrollment steps and eligibility.

Mixing branch saves
Experimental and main saves are incompatible. Keep separate worlds and do not troubleshoot a missing save by repeatedly switching branches.

Entering a wreck without a return plan
Wrecks contain traversal and oxygen puzzles. Mark the entrance, identify junctions and leave a margin for the return trip before testing a deep branch.
Searching for Silver by an old coordinate
Use the current Silver hint dialogue and nearby landmarks. If a Scanner Station result conflicts with an older map, trust the current build and check whether a recent hotfix changed resource accuracy.
Splitting a co-op group without shared landmarks
Agree on names for Biolabs, wrecks and bases before dividing tasks. A fast discovery is not useful if the rest of the group cannot find it again.
Quick-reference survival checklist
| When | Action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Before creating a world | Choose main or Experimental intentionally and read the current mode description. | Branch saves are incompatible and mode details can change. |
| First exploration loop | Carry the Bioscanner, scan creatures and record landmarks. | Scans can unlock additional passive Biomod slots. |
| At a Biolab | Review available Biomods and note missing requirements. | Biolabs provide the documented Biomod unlock path, up to six in the July update. |
| Near a Silver area | Listen for the Silver hint dialogue and map the nearby landmark. | The hint is official guidance; exact coordinates are not fixed in the available notes. |
| At a wreck entrance | Plan the return route before solving traversal and oxygen puzzles. | Wreck navigation was revised and can punish an improvised detour. |
| After a patch | Recheck Biomods, scanner results, wreck cues, voice chat and mode availability. | Hotfixes have already changed resource accuracy and voice-chat detection. |
What the roadmap means for your save
Unknown Worlds says future updates may expand the world, biomes, creatures, resources, tools, vehicles and story, alongside smaller improvements and hotfixes. The roadmap is explicitly subject to change. Start a Survival world for the current experience, but expect that a later update can rebalance progression or add content rather than treating today’s route as a permanent solution.

That statement describes the update cadence, not a schedule. Keep local notes, label screenshots with the build date and revisit any guide that gives exact coordinates or quantities after a major patch.
Bottom line: a safe first plan
Start on the main branch, choose Survival or Creative from the current in-game descriptions, and record the build you are using. Explore in short loops, scan creatures with the Bioscanner, visit Biolabs for Biomod unlocks, and treat passive slots as a reason to scan rather than skip ordinary wildlife. Use the current Silver hint dialogue instead of trusting an old map. Enter wrecks with a marked return route and an oxygen margin. In co-op, keep the group to four players or fewer and agree on landmarks and communication. Choose Experimental only when you accept bugs and permanently separate saves. Recheck all precise instructions after updates, because Subnautica 2 is still changing.
