Is Subnautica 2 set on a new planet?
Yes. Unknown Worlds describes the sequel as an underwater survival adventure on an all-new alien world. The series is moving beyond Planet 4546B, the setting of the earlier games; official announcements do not identify the new planet by name. Unknown Worlds’ current game page describes the new setting, while its 2024 announcement first said the story would travel beyond 4546B.
The new world is the setting for exploration and survival, with base building and tool crafting among the features listed on the official game page. The page does not establish that every planned feature is final.
Does Subnautica 2 have multiplayer?
Yes, but co-op is optional: you can explore alone or play with up to three friends, for a maximum of four players. That makes multiplayer a way to share the survival adventure, not a requirement to play the game.

Can you play with friends on other platforms?
In an Xbox Wire preview published May 4, 2026, Unknown Worlds programmer Sam Dark said players could invite Xbox friends and friends on other platforms through the in-game menu. This describes cross-platform friend invitations; it should not be taken as a guarantee that every platform, store version, or account setup is compatible in all circumstances. When did Early Access start, and where is the game available?
Unknown Worlds announced that Subnautica 2 Early Access started on May 14, 2026. The launch announcement linked Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Xbox/Microsoft Store. Xbox’s May 2026 preview described availability for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with day-one access through Game Pass. Store availability and subscription terms can vary by region and may change, so check the relevant live store listing for current details. Subnautica 2 is still in development. The Xbox listing warns that it is a work in progress and may contain bugs, features that are still being developed, and performance issues. Early Access descriptions should not be read as promises about the finished feature set, final performance, or a full-release date; the sources cited here do not give a full-release date.
The practical choice is whether you would rather explore alone or share the experience with friends. The game supports both approaches, but its evolving state means the experience may change during Early Access.
