The game is available digitally on PC storefronts and the Xbox/Microsoft Store. Steam lists May 14, 2026, as the release date and names Unknown Worlds as developer and publisher. Steam also lists the soundtrack separately as digital content.
Can you play Subnautica 2 co-op?
Yes. Co-op is optional: you can play alone or join up to three friends online, for a maximum of four players total. Steam describes the game as single-player with optional online co-operative multiplayer. The developer says groups can work together to explore ruins and adapt to the planet.

What kind of game is it?
Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival adventure set on an all-new alien world. Its listed activities include exploring biomes in a Tadpole submersible, scanning and studying creatures, crafting tools, building and customizing bases, and uncovering the story’s mysteries. These are features of an Early Access game under active development, so content and performance can change.
How much does Subnautica 2 cost?
Unknown Worlds announced a launch price of US$29.99 and said prices would be localized by region. Steam displayed US$29.99 when reviewed, but that does not establish the current price in every country or storefront. Check the store you plan to use for the price and availability shown in your region.

The developer said one Early Access purchase includes additions, updates and hotfixes through the 1.0 launch and beyond. This is a digital game purchase; the Steam listing offers the soundtrack separately as digital content.
What should you expect from Early Access?
The Steam listing warns that the build may contain bugs, features still in development, and performance issues. Early Access means the game is playable, but it is not a promise that its content, balance, or technical performance is finished.

Roadmap plans can change
Unknown Worlds’ Early Access roadmap describes intentions, not guaranteed delivery dates. It outlines a later major content drop intended to expand the world, biomes, creatures, resources, tools, vehicles, and story, alongside smaller quality-of-life, bug-fix, balance, and optimization updates. The roadmap says requested co-op improvements and additions were planned for the second update, while cautioning: “This roadmap is subject to change or adjustment.”
The developer’s news index records the Buddy System update on August 19, 2026, followed by hotfix 1 on September 1 and hotfix 2 on October 6. Those posts show that development updates continued through October 6, 2026; they do not guarantee a future update schedule.

Why does the launch date have a complicated backstory?
A March 2026 Delaware Court of Chancery opinion addressed a dispute between Krafton and Unknown Worlds leadership. The court reinstated Edward Gill as CEO and restored his operational control period, enjoining Krafton from circumventing that authority or impeding his decision-making over the Early Access launch. It also directed that necessary Steam-platform access be restored. The opinion extended the base earnout testing period by 258 days, to September 15, 2026, and recognized a contractual right to extend it to March 15, 2027. These details describe the court’s March 2026 findings and remedies; they do not establish later case developments or current corporate arrangements. Court House News reproduced the opinion.
