Yes. Subnautica 2 has cross-platform proximity voice chat in Early Access. Unknown Worlds added it in the Early Access 1.2 “Buddy System” update on August 19, 2026. Your voice gets quieter to other players as you move farther away, and you can choose always on, push to talk, or always off.
The feature is still part of an Early Access game, so settings and behavior may change. The latest relevant official note cited here is Buddy System Hotfix 2 from October 6, 2026, which corrected voice-activity detection for local and remote players.

When Subnautica 2 added proximity chat
Proximity voice chat arrived with Early Access 1.2, called the “Buddy System” update, announced on August 19, 2026. It was introduced alongside cooperative features such as revives, emotes, and player trading. The official patch notes describe it as “Cross-Platform Proximity Voice Chat”.

Players in the same session can talk while exploring, and the game changes how clearly they hear one another according to distance. Unknown Worlds does not publish a numerical range in the cited notes, so there is no official meter value at which a voice cuts out.

Subnautica 2 supports cooperative play for up to four players. The game’s official site describes four-player co-op, while the launch announcement frames the choice as playing alone or with up to three friends. Proximity chat applies to that multiplayer experience and is described by Unknown Worlds as cross-platform.
The official Subnautica 2 site provides the current four-player co-op description, and the Early Access launch announcement explains the solo-or-three-friends capacity.
How distance-sensitive voice works
Proximity chat models conversation by location. When two players are close, their voices should be easier to hear. As they separate, the game makes the voice harder to hear. That lets a nearby conversation remain local to the people around it instead of broadcasting every word to the entire team at the same volume.

What the official notes establish
- Voice volume or clarity changes with player distance.
- The system is available across supported platforms in cross-platform sessions.
- The patch notes do not state a fixed radius, a falloff curve, or the distance at which communication becomes impossible.
- There is no published developer statistic measuring latency, range, or voice quality.
What this means during a session
Use proximity chat for immediate, location-based coordination: warning a nearby teammate about a creature, calling someone to a base, or speaking to players gathered around the same objective. A teammate moving into another part of the world may become difficult to understand even if both players remain in the same session. Because no official range is specified, treat the effect as qualitative rather than planning around a precise number of meters.
Choose one of the three voice modes
The Buddy System notes list three choices. They control whether your microphone transmits, but the announcement does not identify a default mode or a universal push-to-talk key.
| Mode | How transmission works | Best fit | What is not specified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Always on | Your microphone can transmit without a talk-toggle action. | Small groups that want continuous conversation while exploring together. | The default state, microphone threshold, and platform-specific mute behavior. |
| Push to talk | You activate transmission with the game’s assigned talk control. | Players who want to limit background noise or speak only for deliberate callouts. | The key or button binding; check the live controls menu rather than assuming one. |
| Always off | In-game voice chat is disabled for you. | Solo play, text-only coordination, or players who do not want to use voice. | Whether a platform-level voice setting can override the in-game choice. |
Look for these exact mode names in the current game settings. If the interface has changed since version 1.2, use the labels shown by your installed build; do not infer a default from another player’s setup.

How to turn it on or change modes
Unknown Worlds’ announcement confirms the three options but does not publish a complete menu path. The safest procedure is therefore to use the current settings labels in your copy of the game:
- Install the latest available Subnautica 2 Early Access update before testing voice.
- Open the game’s settings or options menu and locate the voice-chat or audio section.
- Select always on, push to talk, or always off.
- If you choose push to talk, inspect the controls or key-bindings screen for the assigned talk command. Do not assume a particular keyboard key or controller button.
- Confirm that the intended microphone is selected at the platform or system level, then join a multiplayer session.
- Test with a teammate at close range first. Move apart and listen for the expected reduction in audibility.
These steps are practical setup guidance, not a published guarantee that every platform uses the same menu names. If your build exposes a separate input-device selector, choose the microphone you actually use; if it does not, use the operating system or console audio settings.
The October 6, 2026 voice-detection hotfix
The most recent specific voice-related note cited here is Buddy System Hotfix 2, dated October 6, 2026. Unknown Worlds says it fixed voice-chat detection so local and remote players are handled consistently and improved voice-activity detection.
That is a targeted correction, not a promise that every microphone, network, or platform configuration will work automatically. The same notice warns that hotfix distribution can take time worldwide. If one player has the fix and another does not, their behavior may differ until both installations receive the update.
Troubleshoot a microphone that is not detected
Use this order to separate an update problem from a configuration problem. None of these checks establishes a new game feature; they are ordinary steps for narrowing down a voice issue.

1. Check the installed game version
Pause before changing settings and let the platform finish downloading pending updates. Restart the game after an update completes. Because the hotfix rollout may be staggered by region, a player who cannot find the fix may need to wait for the update to become available on that platform.
2. Verify the in-game mode
Make sure the setting is not always off. For push to talk, confirm the displayed binding and press it while speaking. If you changed a binding, check for conflicts with another action.
3. Test the input outside the game
Use the operating system or console microphone test to confirm that the device produces an input signal. Check mute switches on the microphone, headset, controller, or adapter. If the system cannot hear the device, changing Subnautica 2’s voice mode will not solve the underlying input problem.
4. Test at close distance
Have the other player stand beside you before judging quality. Moving away can intentionally make speech harder to hear, so a distant teammate is not a reliable first test. Once close-range audio works, separate gradually to verify the distance effect.

The hotfix specifically addressed consistent handling of local and remote players. Ask whether the problem affects only one person, everyone in the session, or only players on another platform. A pattern limited to one microphone points toward device settings; a pattern affecting all remote voices suggests checking updates, network conditions, or platform audio permissions.
6. Restart after changing permissions
If you had to grant microphone access or change the default input device, close and relaunch the game before testing again. This is a conventional troubleshooting step, not a documented requirement from the patch notes.
Cross-platform and Xbox multiplayer requirements
Unknown Worlds calls the proximity feature cross-platform, meaning the feature is intended for sessions where supported platforms play together. The exact platform matrix and any later restrictions can change during Early Access, so verify the current build and platform notices if a friend cannot join.

There is one explicitly documented subscription caveat: the July 8, 2026 Adaptive Measures notes say an Xbox Game Pass subscription of any tier is required to play multiplayer on Xbox. That requirement is specific to Xbox in the cited announcement; do not apply it automatically to PC.
The Adaptive Measures update is documented by Unknown Worlds here. It also provides the relevant privacy-policy context for voice data.
What is known about voice-data privacy
On July 8, 2026, Unknown Worlds said a privacy-policy revision addressed how it planned to process voice data for the upcoming Proximity Chat feature in Early Access 1.2. This confirms that voice-data processing was considered in the policy update.
The cited announcement does not establish how long audio is retained, whether conversations are recorded, what moderation workflow is used, or what consent controls exist. Those details should not be inferred from the existence of proximity chat. Read the current privacy policy linked by the publisher before deciding what to transmit, especially when playing with children or on shared devices.

The official material reviewed does not identify a required headset, microphone, controller, or other physical accessory. Proximity chat is software inside the game. You still need a working microphone if you want to speak, but no particular model or accessory is established as necessary by the cited updates.

Practical choices for different play styles
Exploring as a tight group
Always on is the least interruptive option when everyone is moving together and background noise is controlled. You can speak naturally without reaching for a talk button, while distance still limits how far the conversation carries.
Managing a noisy room
Push to talk gives you deliberate control over transmissions. It is useful when fans, family conversations, music, or keyboard noise would otherwise be sent to nearby teammates. Because the official note does not name a binding, confirm the assigned control before starting a mission.
Playing privately or silently
Always off is the clear choice when you do not want in-game voice. It also prevents accidental transmission while you learn the rest of the multiplayer systems.
Limits of the current information
Several commonly asked details are not supplied in the official notes cited for this article:
- No numeric proximity radius or exact attenuation formula is published.
- No default voice mode is identified.
- No universal keyboard key or controller button for push to talk is specified.
- No official performance statistic, latency figure, or named developer quotation explains the feature.
- No retention period, recording policy, moderation procedure, or consent mechanism is established by the Adaptive Measures announcement alone.
These omissions matter because Early Access settings can change. Treat the live settings menu, current patch notes, and current privacy policy as the authority for details that are not stated above.
Bottom line for Early Access players
Subnautica 2 Early Access does have proximity chat. It was added in version 1.2 on August 19, 2026, works across platforms as described by Unknown Worlds, and makes players harder to hear as they move apart. Choose among always on, push to talk, and always off; use close-range testing and the latest update when diagnosing detection problems. The October 6 hotfix improved local and remote voice-activity detection, but the feature remains subject to Early Access changes and platform-specific setup.
