A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11In the original Subnautica, leviathans are exceptionally large creatures—not all of them enemies. You can find them from the shallows-facing outer biomes to the Lost River and lava regions, while the Sea Emperor and its young are tied to the story. This guide lists each leviathan form and its known biomes; exact spawn points on community maps are reference locations, not guaranteed encounters.
Where to find every leviathan
The locations below apply to the original Subnautica on Planet 4546B, not Below Zero or Subnautica 2. Biome names are the most useful way to navigate: community map coordinates can help narrow a search, but do not guarantee a creature will be present at a particular moment.

| Leviathan | Where to find it | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Reaper Leviathan | Crash Zone, Crash Zone Mesas, Bulb Zone, Mountains, Dunes | Aggressive. The Crash Zone and Aurora area are particularly dangerous to explore. |
| Ghost Leviathan, adult | Grand Reef, Northern Blood Kelp Zone, and Crater Edge | Aggressive. The community Crater Map marks adult spawn references in the Grand Reef and Northern Blood Kelp Zone; the fauna index also lists the Crater Edge. |
| Ghost Leviathan, juvenile | Lost River Bone Fields, Ghost Forest, and Mountains Corridor | Aggressive. These are Lost River-area encounters, distinct from the adult locations. |
| Reefback Leviathan | Blood Kelp Zone, Bulb Zone, Crag Field, Dunes, Grand Reef, Grassy Plateaus, Mushroom Forest, Sparse Reef, and Underwater Islands | Passive. Its broad distribution means it may be encountered far from the more dangerous leviathans. |
| Sea Dragon Leviathan | Inactive Lava Zone and Lava Lakes | Aggressive. Community map spawn references cover both areas. |
| Sea Emperor Leviathan, adult and baby | Primary Containment Facility Aquarium | Story location; see the spoiler-marked section below. |
| Sea Emperor Leviathan, juvenile | Crag Field, Dunes, Grand Reef, Mountains, and Northern Blood Kelp Zone | Juveniles disperse to these biomes after hatching. |
| Sea Treader Leviathan | Primarily Sea Treader’s Path; also Grand Reef and Sea Treader’s Tunnel Caves | Non-aggressive in practical navigation; it moves along a migration route. |
The biome associations and life-stage distinctions are listed in the community-maintained Fauna index and species pages. A community Crater Map provides named spawn locations and coordinate references for Reapers, Ghosts, and Sea Dragons. Treat coordinates as map guidance rather than a promise of an encounter.
Which leviathans are dangerous?
Leviathan is a size classification, not a synonym for hostile creature. The fauna index identifies Reapers, Ghosts, and Sea Dragons as aggressive; Reefbacks and Sea Emperors are passive. Sea Treaders are a classification wrinkle: the fauna index labels their attitude “defensive,” while the species page calls them passive. For navigation, regard them as non-aggressive rather than as active hunters.

- Unravel the mystery - signs abound that something is not right and you must Figure out what happened to this planet and what caused you to crash - can you find a way to make it Off the planet alive
- Disrupt the food Chain - lure and distract a threatening creature with a fresh fish, or simply swim as fast as you can to avoid gnashing jaws of roaming predators
- Aggressive: Reaper, Ghost (adult and juvenile), and Sea Dragon.
- Passive: Reefback and Sea Emperor (including young forms).
- Sea Treader: generally non-aggressive in practical terms; one index uses the label “defensive.”
Finding each species
Reaper Leviathan
Look in the Crash Zone, Crash Zone Mesas, Bulb Zone, Mountains, and Dunes. The Aurora-side Crash Zone is a high-risk area, so avoid treating a map coordinate as a safe or guaranteed viewing point. The community map marks individual references, but your encounter depends on where you explore.
Ghost Leviathan
Adults are associated with the Grand Reef and Northern Blood Kelp Zone, and the fauna index also lists the Crater Edge. Juveniles inhabit Lost River regions: the Bone Fields, Ghost Forest, and Mountains Corridor. Keeping the life stages separate matters because looking for an adult in a juvenile’s Lost River habitat can lead you to the wrong part of the map.

Reefback Leviathan
Reefbacks are passive and have the widest listed spread: Blood Kelp Zone, Bulb Zone, Crag Field, Dunes, Grand Reef, Grassy Plateaus, Mushroom Forest, Sparse Reef, and Underwater Islands. They also occur in Dunes, a biome where Reapers are present, so a Reefback sighting does not by itself mean the surrounding water is safe.
Sea Dragon Leviathan
Search the Inactive Lava Zone and Lava Lakes. These are deep volcanic regions; the community Crater Map lists spawn references in both. The species is aggressive.

Sea Emperor Leviathan (story spoiler)
Spoiler: the adult Sea Emperor and its baby form are found in the Primary Containment Facility Aquarium. After hatching, the juveniles disperse across Crag Field, Dunes, Grand Reef, Mountains, and Northern Blood Kelp Zone. The adult and aquarium-bound young are story-linked encounters; the juveniles are the forms associated with those later biome sightings.
Sea Treader Leviathan
The clearest place to look is Sea Treader’s Path, southwest of Lifepod 5. The route runs between the Dunes and Grand Reef, and Sea Treaders can also be found in the Grand Reef and Sea Treader’s Tunnel Caves. The biome page attributes this PDA observation to the in-game PDA: “Damage to plantlife on the seafloor suggests this may be the migration path of a huge, bottom-dwelling lifeform.”

How to use spawn coordinates
The community Crater Map gives coordinate references for named areas, including the Crash Zone Trench, Crash Zone Mesas, Crash Zone, Bulb Zone, Mountains, and Dunes for Reapers; Grand Reef and Northern Blood Kelp locations for adult Ghosts; Lost River areas for juvenile Ghosts; and the Inactive Lava Zone and Lava Lakes for Sea Dragons. Use those points to orient a search after identifying the correct biome, not as exact-time encounter guarantees. Biome-level locations are the more dependable starting point for deciding where to travel.
