The game in the headline was Subnautica, but its Steam free-play offer is over. A dated report said players could try the full base game at no cost through April 6, 2026; that promotion had ended by October 8, 2026. It is not a free-to-play offer readers can claim now.
What the April Steam offer included
The reported event let Steam users play the full base game during the promotion window. Players had to purchase the game to keep playing after the event. The report did not establish the precise start or end time, regional terms, or whether saves carried over to a later purchase, so those details should not be assumed. GAME-scanner’s April 4, 2026 report described the event; the offer has since expired.
What Subnautica is
Unknown Worlds describes Subnautica as an underwater open-world adventure set on an alien world. Players explore reefs, volcanoes, and cave systems, craft equipment and submarines, and try to survive. Unknown Worlds currently lists the game for Steam, Epic, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation; availability can vary by platform and region.
The original game launched on Steam in January 2018, according to Unknown Worlds’ press kit. Subnautica: Below Zero is a separate next chapter, not the original game or the title of the April Steam event.

Can you still get Subnautica free through that event?
No. The reported Steam promotion ended April 6, 2026. The available event details do not establish whether another promotion is running, so check the game’s current Steam listing for any new offer rather than relying on the expired event headline.
