It is less compelling when your host or existing CDN already provides equivalent edge WAF, DDoS, bot, TLS and caching controls. Sucuri’s current listed prices are $9.99 per month for Basic Firewall and $19.98 per month for Pro Firewall, with one site covered by each listed plan. Its broader Website Security Platform, listed at $549 per year, adds monitoring, malware detection and cleanup services.

What Sucuri Firewall is and how it works
Sucuri Firewall is a cloud-based web application firewall (WAF), intrusion-prevention system (IPS) and content-delivery layer. It operates as a reverse proxy: visitors connect to Sucuri’s network first, Sucuri inspects the HTTP or HTTPS request, and only approved traffic is forwarded to your web server. The server therefore receives fewer hostile requests than it would if its public address were exposed directly.

Sucuri’s documentation describes the service as a cloud protective layer that requires no software installation or modification on the server. Deployment is primarily a DNS change rather than a plugin installation. Once the site’s DNS A record points to the address supplied by Sucuri, the traffic path becomes:
- A visitor requests your domain.
- DNS directs the request to Sucuri’s edge network.
- The firewall evaluates the request against WAF, bot, brute-force and intrusion-prevention rules.
- Allowed traffic is sent to the origin server, while blocked traffic is stopped at the edge.
- Responses can be cached and delivered through Sucuri’s CDN and Anycast network.
This architecture matters because filtering occurs before malicious traffic consumes origin CPU, memory, database connections or bandwidth. It also means a firewall misconfiguration can affect every visitor, so DNS, SSL and application testing are part of the rollout.

What the Firewall protects against
Web-application attacks
Sucuri lists WAF and IDS coverage for common attacks including SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), remote-code-execution attempts and other known exploits. The rules are intended to recognize hostile request patterns and block them without requiring you to edit application code.
DDoS, bots and brute force
DDoS mitigation is listed across the Firewall plans. The service also advertises controls for malicious bots, vulnerability scanners and brute-force activity. These controls are most useful when automated traffic is consuming resources or repeatedly targeting login, search, checkout or API endpoints.

Virtual patching and hardening
Virtual patching can place a protective rule in front of a vulnerable component while you arrange a proper update. That is a compensating control, not a replacement for patching: a rule may not cover every attack path, and an outdated plugin, framework or server remains a liability.
Traffic and access controls
Documented configuration options include protected pages, IP allowlisting, geographic blocking, custom SSL support and two-factor-authentication options. These controls let an administrator require extra protection for sensitive paths, permit trusted offices or integrations, and reduce traffic from regions that the site does not serve.

Performance features are part of the service
The Firewall also includes CDN functions, Anycast routing, caching, HTTP/2 and website-acceleration features. Caching can serve eligible static or repeatable responses from the edge instead of querying the origin on every request. Anycast routing directs users toward an available nearby network location, while HTTP/2 can improve the efficiency of multiple requests over a connection.
These features do not guarantee a particular speed increase. Actual results depend on cacheability, origin performance, geographic audience, application behavior and cache settings. Dynamic pages, authenticated sessions and personalized responses may bypass caching or require careful rules.

A perimeter WAF is one security layer, not a complete security program. Firewall-only protection does not by itself provide secure passwords, timely software updates, least-privilege accounts, reliable backups, secure development practices or a tested recovery plan.
Sucuri’s product split is especially important: monitoring, malware detection, malware cleanup, blocklist removal and incident-review services are described as part of the broader Website Security Platform rather than the Firewall-only plans. If you need someone to investigate a compromise or remove malicious files, confirm that the service tier you purchase includes that work.

How to deploy Sucuri Firewall
Before changing DNS
- Record the current origin IP address and keep a rollback copy of the existing DNS records.
- Identify every hostname that must continue working, including administrative, API, mail and third-party integration names.
- Confirm how your certificate is issued and whether the site needs a custom SSL certificate.
- List dynamic paths—logins, carts, dashboards, webhooks and APIs—that should not be cached indiscriminately.
- Check that you can test the site with an administrator account after the switch.
Point the site at the firewall
- Choose the Firewall plan in Sucuri and enter the domain you want protected.
- In the Sucuri dashboard, note the destination address or DNS value provided for the firewall.
- Open the DNS manager at your registrar or DNS host and replace the domain’s public A record with Sucuri’s supplied value. Leave unrelated records, such as mail records, unchanged.
- Configure the SSL mode and, when required, upload or select the custom certificate supported by your setup.
- Wait for DNS changes to reach users, then test both HTTP and HTTPS behavior, redirects, static assets, forms, logins and API calls.
- After confirming that traffic is passing through Sucuri, restrict direct access to the origin where your hosting environment allows it. Use the firewall’s documented source ranges or your host’s access-control mechanism rather than guessing IP addresses.
Validate the application
Test from a normal user session and an administrator session. Confirm that cached pages do not expose private content, that webhooks still arrive, that file uploads work, and that rate limits do not block legitimate clients. Review firewall events after launch and tune allowlists or protected-page rules only when you can identify the affected request.

When the Firewall is worth the recurring cost
Strong reasons to buy
- Your origin is receiving repeated exploit attempts, brute-force requests, scanners, scrapers or abusive bots.
- A traffic spike or DDoS event could exhaust hosting resources before your application can respond.
- You want a managed reverse proxy and CDN without installing and tuning a server-side firewall.
- You need virtual patching while a code or plugin update is delayed, and you have a plan to complete the update.
- You value vendor assistance and may later need monitoring or cleanup through the Platform tier.
Reasons to keep evaluating alternatives
- Your host or existing CDN already supplies equivalent WAF, DDoS, bot, TLS and caching controls.
- The site has low exposure, little valuable data and minimal operational impact if it becomes unavailable.
- You expect the Firewall to detect malware, repair compromised files, provide backups or guarantee recovery.
- Your team cannot safely manage DNS, certificates, cache exclusions and origin-access restrictions.
For a small site, compare the fee with the cost of an outage, emergency cleanup and lost time. For a larger portfolio, check whether one-site pricing or a custom plan fits the number of domains and the support level you require.

Do not compare labels such as “security plugin” and “WAF” as if they described the same deployment. Evaluate each option on these concrete axes:
- Deployment layer: Is traffic filtered at an edge reverse proxy, on the web server, or inside the application after the request has already consumed origin resources?
- Attack coverage: Are WAF rules, DDoS mitigation, bot and brute-force controls, and virtual patching included?
- Operations: Does the service provide alerting, malware detection, cleanup, blocklist removal or human incident support, or only request filtering?
- Performance: Are CDN delivery, Anycast routing, caching and HTTP/2 available, and can you exclude dynamic or private responses?
- Cost and scale: Is billing monthly or annual, how many sites are covered, and are multi-site or custom terms available?
- Compatibility and control: Can you manage DNS, SSL, protected pages, allowlists, geographic rules and application-specific exceptions?
A server plugin may be convenient but can still consume origin resources before it runs. An existing CDN may already cover the same edge functions. The relevant question is whether Sucuri adds a capability your current stack does not have, not whether it has a longer feature list.
Common deployment problems and fixes
The site goes offline after the DNS change
Check that the A record points to the exact value supplied by Sucuri, that the origin IP entered in the firewall is current, and that the origin accepts connections from the firewall network. Restore the previous DNS value only as a temporary rollback while correcting the configuration.

HTTPS shows a certificate warning
Verify the certificate and SSL mode on both the edge and origin sides. A custom certificate may be required for the domain, and the origin may separately need a valid certificate for encrypted traffic between Sucuri and your host.
Users see stale or private content
Review cache rules for login, account, checkout, dashboard, API and personalized paths. Purge affected cache entries, exclude those paths from caching, and retest with separate anonymous and authenticated sessions.
A legitimate integration is blocked
Use the firewall event details to identify the request, then add the narrowest possible allowlist or rule exception. Avoid globally disabling protection when one webhook, office IP or API client is the problem.
The origin still receives direct attacks
Confirm that the origin address is not publicly exposed elsewhere and that host-level access rules permit only the firewall’s documented source ranges where practical. Rotate exposed credentials and investigate logs; a reverse proxy cannot protect an origin that attackers can continue to reach directly.
Bottom line: who should buy it?
Sucuri Firewall is a sensible purchase for a site that needs managed, edge-based filtering and acceleration and does not already receive equivalent protection from its host or CDN. Its value is highest when malicious traffic threatens origin resources, when DDoS and bot controls matter, or when a team wants virtual patching and centralized traffic rules without maintaining firewall software on the server.
It is not a substitute for updates, strong access control, backups or incident response, and Firewall-only plans are not the same as a malware-monitoring and cleanup service. Choose the $9.99 Basic or $19.98 Pro listing only after checking the one-site limit and the controls your site actually needs; choose the broader $549-per-year Platform listing when ongoing detection and remediation are part of the requirement.
