Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is an appealing two-part Mario package: the Switch edition’s inventive, course-based 3D World provides the bigger cooperative campaign, while Bowser’s Fury offers a compact, free-roaming change of pace. Faster movement and Snapshot Mode improve the Switch version, but online play has a reported lag caveat; for dependable multiplayer, playing together on one system is the safer choice.
Two adventures with different rhythms
Nintendo’s Switch release, dated February 12, 2021, bundles two distinct games. Super Mario 3D World is a level-based platformer built around discrete courses. Bowser’s Fury takes Mario across connected islands in Lake Lapcat, making exploration and collecting Cat Shines the focus. The contrast is the package’s central appeal: one half keeps offering tightly designed stages and fresh course ideas, while the other lets you roam and respond to a changing threat.
Super Mario 3D World: a varied course campaign
Each stage has three Green Stars and a stamp to find, adding optional goals to the route through the level. Nintendo Life reviewer Chris Scullion praises the steady introduction of new mechanics and enemies, which helps the courses stay varied rather than relying on one idea for too long. The initial playable lineup is Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad, with Rosalina available later. Their abilities differ, giving players reasons to choose a character beyond appearance.
Bowser’s Fury: connected islands and a two-player pairing
In Bowser’s Fury, Mario explores Lake Lapcat, collects Cat Shines and works with Bowser Jr. as Fury Bowser periodically attacks. A second local player can control Bowser Jr., making this a more focused two-player mode than 3D World’s four-character co-op. Scullion’s review describes this adventure as relatively quick to finish; collecting more Cat Shines extends the pursuit, but the review does not establish a universal completion time.

How many players can play?
The maximum depends on the adventure and how you connect. Nintendo’s US product listing specifies one-system play for one to four players, and local-wireless and online play for two to four. Bowser’s Fury supports two players locally, with the second player as Bowser Jr.

Nintendo Support says local-wireless and online players need a separate copy for each participating system. For online play, players must be on one another’s Friend Lists and have Nintendo Switch Online. These are separate setups from sharing one system on the couch.

Does the Switch version improve on the Wii U original?
Scullion’s Nintendo Life review describes character movement in the Switch version as faster than in the Wii U release. The Switch edition also adds Snapshot Mode to both adventures: Nintendo’s product page describes pausing the action to take a shot, apply filters and decorate with stamps. The review also notes expanded wireless multiplayer. Together, these changes make the package a more convenient fit for Switch, although the core course-based identity of 3D World remains intact.
Does it work on Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo lists the game as supported on Nintendo Switch 2 and provides a free update. Nintendo says the update optimizes visuals and frame rate, adds HDR for Bowser’s Fury and introduces GameShare features. Nintendo Support’s update history lists version 1.2.2, released September 30, 2025, with several issues addressed. Feature availability and the latest version can change, so consult Nintendo’s update history for current details.

What are the drawbacks?
Online co-op may not feel as reliable as couch play
In his Nintendo Life review, Scullion reports that online multiplayer sometimes lagged or stuttered, affecting jump timing. That is his experience, not a guarantee that every session will have problems, but it matters in a platformer where precise jumps are part of the play. If smooth co-op is your priority, same-system play avoids relying on an online connection.
The two halves are not equally expansive
3D World is the larger, course-driven campaign. Bowser’s Fury is a compact alternative built around exploring Lake Lapcat and collecting Cat Shines; Scullion found it did not take long to finish, though optional collection provides more to do. Treat it as a distinct bonus adventure rather than expecting a second campaign of the same scale.

Who should buy it?
- First-time players: The package offers a substantial course-based campaign plus a more open-ended companion adventure, with cooperative options in both.
- Returning Wii U players: The Switch release adds faster movement, Snapshot Mode and expanded wireless multiplayer, but the main 3D World experience is still the same course-focused adventure.
- Local co-op groups: 3D World supports up to four on one system; Bowser’s Fury has a two-player Mario-and-Bowser-Jr. setup.
- Online-first players: The mode is available, but Scullion’s reported lag and stuttering make it a less certain choice for players who need consistently precise timing.
Optional amiibo bonuses
Cat Mario and Cat Peach amiibo are optional, not required to play. Nintendo says compatible figures can grant extra power-ups; its support information includes an Invincibility Bell bonus from Cat Mario. These are extras, not a prerequisite for either adventure.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury for Nintendo Switch is best understood as one strong, varied Mario package rather than two equally sized campaigns. Its course design, accessible couch co-op and contrasting Lake Lapcat adventure make it easy to recommend, especially to players who can enjoy multiplayer on the same system.
