A community mod gives Super Mario 64 an arcade-style twist: insert a coin to add credits, then use those credits to let Mario run and jump. It is a hobby project—not a new Nintendo feature or a change to the official game.
How the coin-slot mod works
Hackaday reports that creator PrintAndPanic connected a Raspberry Pi to a coin slot and modified Super Mario 64 to use credits. The reported setup ties those credits to Mario’s movement: while credits remain, he can run and jump; when they run out, his movement becomes highly restricted. Hackaday’s report also says the creator built a custom enclosure and links to the project code.

The report does not specify the Raspberry Pi model, coin acceptor, wiring, coin-to-credit rate, project cost, or system requirements. The linked repository’s current contents and build instructions have not been independently verified, so the report alone is not enough to reproduce the setup reliably.
Why “microtransactions” needs a caveat
In a 2023 article, Fordham Law Review Online uses “microtransactions” to mean purchases of in-game goods with real money. This mod instead uses physical coins to affect a modified game. The title describes the arcade-like idea, not an official in-game store, paid Nintendo update, or change to the commercial version of Super Mario 64. Fordham Law Review Online’s 2023 discussion also says the game has 120 Power Stars, with 70 needed to complete it; those are game-context figures, not statistics about the mod.

What is—and is not—documented
- Reported: a Raspberry Pi and coin slot feed credits into a modified game, and credits affect Mario’s movement.
- Reported: PrintAndPanic made a custom enclosure, and Hackaday linked the project code.
- Not established in the report: exact hardware models, wiring, coin rate, price, requirements, or a verified parts list.
Hackaday author Bryan Cockfield places the project among other modifications to the classic, writing: “There are plenty of other modifications for this classic as well, most of which involve improving the game instead of adding a modern microtransaction-based system.”
