The pair launched on 2 October 2025 with sharper presentation and a handful of additions—but not a substantial remake or a large amount of new content. In the US, Nintendo’s published list price is $69.99 for the digital bundle, compared with $39.99 for either game on its own. Whether that is good value depends on what you already own and how you plan to play.
What does each game do differently?
Both games build their platforming around small planetoids, shifting gravity and an orchestral score, but they have distinct identities. The first Super Mario Galaxy is a rescue adventure centered on Rosalina, the Lumas and Mario’s search for Power Stars. Super Mario Galaxy 2 sends Mario through worlds aboard Starship Mario and makes Yoshi a core part of its levels: his abilities change how you move and deal with enemies. Nintendo describes the pair as platform, action and adventure games for one or two players. (Nintendo product page)

The storybooks give Rosalina’s world more context, but neither game depends on plot to make its case. As Nintendo Life Reviews Editor Ollie Reynolds puts it, “Neither game provides a particularly captivating story (though the storybooks do a good job at fleshing things out), but this really doesn’t matter one iota – the gameplay more than makes up for any narrative shortcomings.” (Nintendo Life review)
What is new in the Switch releases?
Nintendo lists enhanced resolution, an improved UI, adapted button, stick and motion controls, additional Storybook chapters and a soundtrack mode among the Switch-release additions. Nintendo Life’s review also reports Assist Mode in both games, which gives Mario extra health and returns him safely after a fall. The new material is welcome, particularly for players who want a gentler way through tricky sections, but it does not overhaul either game.

Nintendo’s product page identifies amiibo compatibility. Nintendo Life reports that Mario & Luma and Rosalina Galaxy-themed amiibo provide small benefits: a health boost and a 1-Up, respectively. Other amiibo gave the reviewer roughly three Star Bits, which they considered of little practical use. These are optional bonuses, not requirements for enjoying either game. How do the games look and run on Switch and Switch 2?
Nintendo Life’s review describes sharper visuals, updated textures and a cleaner UI than the Wii releases. Its reviewer reports 60fps gameplay at 1080p docked on the original Switch and 4K visuals on Switch 2. A Nintendo Life summary of Digital Foundry’s analysis likewise reports 1080p on Switch and 4K on Switch 2, with very few performance drops; it also notes lower-bitrate cutscenes and colour-banding in some sky scenes. These are reported observations, not a guarantee for every scene or display. (Nintendo Life review; Nintendo Life summary of Digital Foundry)
Nintendo says a free Switch 2 update enables 4K resolution in supported games when played on Switch 2 with a compatible display. It is an update for the Switch release, not a separate game purchase. Nintendo’s Singapore product page lists TV, tabletop and handheld modes and cautions that compatibility and play experience may differ on Switch Lite. Are the pointer controls comfortable in handheld mode?
Not always. The Wii originals used pointer and motion input, and the Switch versions retain pointer actions through gyro controls—for example, collecting Star Bits. Nintendo Life’s reviewer says the pointer often needs recentering and can feel awkward with a Pro Controller. Separate Joy-Con are the reviewer’s preferred setup for docked play.

Handheld play can use the touchscreen, but the reviewer still found gyro aiming and moving the console around inconvenient. That makes control comfort a genuine trade-off for handheld-first players, rather than a reason to assume the games are unplayable. Nintendo Life also reports that the Switch 2 version can use mouse functionality for the second player in co-op. (Nintendo Life review)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the $69.99 US bundle worth it?
Nintendo’s US page lists regular digital prices published for the release: $39.99 for either standalone game and $69.99 for the bundle. Buying the two separately at those suggested prices would total $79.98, so the bundle is $9.99 less. These are Nintendo’s US list prices, not a live retailer quote; prices and availability can vary by region and seller. Nintendo lists both downloadable and packaged editions, but the cited prices are for digital games. (Nintendo US announcement; Nintendo Singapore product page)

- Enhance your adventure even further with a free update to take advantage of the processing power of Nintendo Switch 2!
The value question is less about whether the games are good than whether this version adds enough for your situation. The critical response gathered around launch praised the games’ lasting quality while also raising the price and limited new content as reservations; that roundup is a pre-launch snapshot, not a current review-score aggregate. (Nintendo Life review roundup)
- New to both games: The bundle offers two complete, distinct platformers, portable play and updated visuals. It is the clearest case for buying both together.
- Already own one: Compare the $39.99 US published standalone digital price for the other game with what portability and the Switch updates are worth to you; there is no need to rebuy a game you already have.
- Own Super Mario 3D All-Stars or the Wii releases: The upgrade is harder to justify if you mainly want to replay familiar content. Galaxy 2 was not included in 3D All-Stars, so that game may change the calculation. Nintendo Life’s reviewer says a Galaxy save from 3D All-Stars cannot be transferred to this version.
- Switch 2 owner: The free update and compatible display can make the 4K presentation a draw. If you play on the original Switch, Nintendo Life reports 1080p docked rather than 4K.
- Handheld-first player: Consider whether gyro pointer input and occasional recentering will bother you. The reviewer’s docked Joy-Con preference may matter more than the resolution bump.
- Interested mainly in extras: The storybooks, Assist Mode, soundtrack and small amiibo bonuses add polish and options, but they are modest reasons on their own to pay for games you already own.
Verdict
Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are still excellent, complementary platformers, and the Switch versions make a strong two-game package for newcomers. The $69.99 US bundle is easier to recommend if you want both and value portability; it is less compelling for returning players seeking a major remake or extensive new content. Before buying, weigh your existing copies against the resolution you can use and the pointer controls you are comfortable with.
