The Analogue Pocket is a premium handheld built around playing original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges. Its appeal is clearest if you already own games and want a modern screen and FPGA-based hardware in a dedicated cartridge player. It is not automatically the best value for someone without cartridges, seeking an all-in-one retro library, or mainly wanting to play on a television.
What the Analogue Pocket is—and what it is not
The Pocket is a handheld that accepts original Game Boy-family cartridges directly. Analogue says it supports more than 2,780 Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges without an adapter. That is a manufacturer compatibility claim, not a guarantee that every individual cartridge is in working condition or that every game has been independently tested.
Its FPGA hardware is designed to reproduce the behavior of classic gaming hardware through configurable logic. Analogue describes the Pocket as operating through a transistor-level implementation, while Wired’s review explains the FPGA approach in terms of logic configured to mimic older hardware. These descriptions explain the design; they do not, by themselves, prove perfect compatibility or accuracy for every game.
Screen and portability
Analogue lists a 3.5-inch LCD with 615 pixels per inch. Those figures describe a dense, relatively compact handheld display; they do not settle whether its size or presentation will suit every player. If you prefer the feel or look of an original Game Boy, or want a larger screen for extended play, compare the Pocket in person if possible and look for attributed reviews that discuss those preferences.

Analogue estimates up to six hours of battery life at the default display brightness. This is the manufacturer’s estimate, not an independent runtime measurement or a guaranteed result; actual use may vary with settings and conditions.
A cartridge-first design also means carrying physical games. That is convenient if you want to use your collection as-is, but it adds bulk and makes the condition and security of your cartridges part of the portability decision. A modified original Game Boy may make more sense if its particular hardware and controls are what you value; a different retro handheld may better suit players who prioritize a broader built-in or software-based library. No single comparison establishes a universal winner across those choices.

Cartridges, adapters, and other ways to play
Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance
These three cartridge families are the Pocket’s central use case and are supported without an adapter according to Analogue’s product page. If you already own compatible cartridges, that capability is the strongest reason to consider the handheld.
Sega Game Gear and other adapter-supported systems
The Game Gear Adapter lets the Pocket play original Sega Game Gear cartridges. Analogue’s adapter documentation and support and FAQ pages describe additional adapter support. Check the current documentation for the exact system and accessory you intend to use: support beyond the built-in Game Boy-family cartridge slot depends on the relevant adapter, which is a separate buying consideration.

openFPGA and cartridge-less use
The Pocket also supports openFPGA, a platform for additional cores and uses beyond inserting an original cartridge. That may broaden its appeal if you do not own many cartridges, but it changes the setup question: you will need to be comfortable with the relevant software and configuration rather than treating the handheld as a ready-made, cartridge-free game library. The existence of openFPGA alone does not establish a particular game’s availability, setup difficulty, or performance.

Analogue sells the Dock as a companion product for television play and controller use. It is an additional purchase, not something to assume is included with the handheld. Check Analogue’s current FAQ and the specific package listing before buying, since what comes in a package can depend on the product and sale.

If you mostly play at home, include the Dock and any controllers you need in your total-system calculation. If handheld play is the point, there is no reason to pay for TV functionality you will not use.
Who should buy the Analogue Pocket?
- Consider it if you own Game Boy, Game Boy Color, or Game Boy Advance cartridges and want a dedicated modern handheld to play them.
- Consider it if original cartridges are part of the experience you want, and the Pocket’s compact screen and FPGA-based design fit your preferences.
- Look elsewhere or weigh the cost carefully if you have few or no cartridges and primarily want an out-of-the-box digital library. The Pocket can do more than cartridge playback, but openFPGA use entails its own setup and does not automatically provide a ready-to-play collection.
- Compare alternatives if long-session comfort, different controls, a larger display, or avoiding the risk of carrying original games matters more to you than direct cartridge support.
- Budget separately for the Dock if you want television play, adapters for other cartridge systems, and any games or storage you do not already own. Analogue’s product and support pages describe capabilities, not a current all-in price for every buyer’s setup.
Verdict: a compelling cartridge player, not an automatic best buy
The Pocket has a focused case: it pairs direct Game Boy-family cartridge support with a high-density LCD and FPGA hardware. For someone with a substantial cartridge collection who wants a contemporary handheld built around using it, those are meaningful advantages. For someone without cartridges, or someone who values a larger screen, specific controls, lower setup effort, or television play above the cartridge experience, the extra hardware and accessories may not justify the cost.
That is why “the greatest Game Boy ever made” is best treated as a reviewer’s opinion rather than an objective current ranking. Ars Technica used that phrase in its 2021 headline, while Wired’s review called it “the best new Game Boy you can buy” in its own review context. Neither verdict substitutes for a comparison against every current handheld or for deciding whether original cartridges matter to you.
