Super Meat Boy 3D Reviews: Is the 3D Platformer Worth Playing?

Super Meat Boy 3D brings precision platforming into 3D. Reviews praise its controls but differ on visuals, level readability, and how faithfully the shift works.

Super Meat Boy 3D aims to bring the series’ demanding precision platforming into three dimensions. Reviews praise how responsive it feels to play, but raise concerns about its visual presentation and levels that can lean on trial and error. Whether it works for you depends on how much you value exact movement—and how clearly each jump communicates what to do next.

What is Super Meat Boy 3D?

Super Meat Boy 3D is a single-player precision platformer developed by Sluggerfly and Team Meat and published by Headup and GCORES PUBLISHING. Steam lists its release date as March 31, 2026, and tags it as both a precision platformer and a controller-friendly game. Steam’s listing is the available PC storefront reference.

How do the reviews describe its gameplay?

Controls and movement

Control feel is a strong point in PC Gamer’s launch-day review: the reviewer says the game feels good in the hands and preserves movement built around precision. GamesRadar’s earlier demo coverage likewise highlights close calls and precise jumps, but that impression comes from a preview and should not be treated as a verdict on every level in the released game.

Level readability and trial and error

PC Gamer criticizes some levels for relying on trial and error. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict, but it points to an important question for a precision platformer: when a jump fails, does the layout make the mistake understandable, or does progress depend on repeated attempts to discover what the level expects? Camera angle, perspective, and visibility of landing spots are worth judging as you play; the available reviews do not establish a universal readability problem.

#1 Best Overall
Super Meat Boy 3D - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Tough-as-nails precision platforming action. Brutal, but fair levels designed to break you.
  • Boss. Fights. Dark World levels so tough, you'll scream in the rain at a bus stop.
  • A soundtrack that was once described by a Guitar Center employee as “hey, either buy the guitars or get out. We’re seriously going to call the cops!”
  • n-game text languages: English, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish (Spain).
  • 3D!

Visual presentation and directional input

PC Gamer also criticizes the visual style and notes that 45-degree directional snapping, when enabled, can cause problems for some players. Treat that as a reviewer’s specific concern rather than a confirmed issue for everyone. If directional input feels imprecise, check the game’s control settings and try the available snapping options to see which suits your play.

Is Super Meat Boy 3D like the original?

Reviews frame the game as an attempt to carry the series’ close calls and exacting jumps into a 3D space, not as a simple change of camera. GamesRadar’s demo coverage sees the appeal in how those familiar demands translate to 3D. The critic descriptions surfaced on Metacritic are more divided: one calls the translation faithful and rich in ideas, while another argues that the strong foundation gets lost in the 3D execution. Those are contrasting perspectives, not a settled consensus.

Rank #2
Super Meat Boy 3D - Special Edition (PlayStation 5)
  • Super Meat Boy 3D includes: Reversible cover; sticker set, art book, fabric patch and lenticular postcard
  • New Levels – New Epic Boss Battles and Unlockable Secrets
  • Precision platforming requires perfect timing
  • Brutal difficulty levels
  • Created by Team Meat, the duo behind the original Super Meat Boy

Is Super Meat Boy 3D worth it?

It looks like a better fit for players who enjoy precise, repeated attempts and want to learn a level through movement. Be more cautious if you need every obstacle to read clearly on the first pass or if the visual style is central to your enjoyment. Before committing, consider these questions:

  • Do you enjoy tight controls and jumps where small timing differences matter?
  • When you miss a landing, can you tell what went wrong and adjust?
  • Does the 3D perspective make hazards and landing points clear enough for you?
  • Do you like the visual presentation, despite PC Gamer’s criticism of it?

Steam’s storefront snapshot checked on October 8, 2026 showed 87% positive from 830 overall user reviews and a “Very Positive” rating. These are Steam user-review figures, not critic scores, and both the percentage and review count can change. Metacritic’s listing showed 25 critic reviews in a search-result snapshot, but no verifiable aggregate score was established; the count is not a substitute for one.
