Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns brings a late-1980s arcade series back with updated visuals, a 3D presentation and optional VR. Kotaku reported on October 6, 2026, that it had reached the top of Steam’s Japanese bestsellers list, while its accompanying chart image is dated September 4 and the report gives no exact rank. Producer Kentaro Matsui also recalled spending his teenage pocket money trying to win at the arcade game.
What is Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns?
Kotaku describes Super Real Mahjong Venus Returns as the latest entry in a series that began on PCs and in arcades in the late 1980s. It is a strip-mahjong game: players compete in simulated mahjong against four female characters, and a win advances a clothing-removal scene.
Kotaku says the arcade-era games stopped before the final clothing-removal state, while the home release lets the scene continue. The new game retains the original characters and keeps its scenarios close to earlier entries, but updates the visuals and adjusts gameplay with inspiration from newer titles including Mahjong Soul and Bunny Garden.
What did producer Kentaro Matsui say about the arcade series?
In an Automaton West interview cited by Kotaku, producer Kentaro Matsui recalled his teenage attachment to the arcade games and spending his pocket money trying to win. Kotaku quoted him saying: “I was completely, hopelessly devoted to those girls.”

What does the Steam chart claim establish?
Kotaku reported on October 6, 2026, that Venus Returns had reached the top of Steam’s Japanese bestsellers list. That is a dated report, not a live ranking: the chart image in the article is labeled September 4, 2026, and Kotaku does not provide a numeric rank. The article therefore supports the claim that the game reached the list’s top, but not that it still holds that position now.

Yes. The game has a Desktop Mode as well as VR support, so a headset is not mandatory. Kotaku says the team initially conceived the new presentation for VR, then developed Desktop Mode because many people do not own a headset.

Kotaku says Venus Returns is the first game in the franchise to be available in English. It also reports that the developers added an auto mode to help players who are new to mahjong.
