Super Robot Wars Y is a grid-based tactical RPG built around a crossover cast of anime pilots and mecha. It is most appealing if you enjoy tactical combat and seeing characters from different series share one story; it may be a harder fit if you want a brisk, clearly explained or consistently demanding strategy game.

Bandai Namco describes SUPER ROBOT WARS Y as a grid-based tactical combat RPG in which pilots and mecha from multiple anime series come together in an original story. Its roster includes characters and machines from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Season 1, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, SSSS.DYNAZENON, Getter Robo Arc and Macross Delta: Passionate Walküre. Are the battles and visuals worth it?
MeriStation’s October 4, 2025 review singles out the combat animations as a standout. That praise supports the “stunning visuals” part of the game’s pitch most clearly in the presentation of attacks and mecha battles; it does not establish that every visual element is exceptional. The grid-based format gives those animated exchanges a tactical context, while the crossover makes each encounter an opportunity to watch pilots and machines from different franchises interact in combat.
Calling the gameplay “addictive” is a matter of taste rather than a measurable fact. The evidence supports a more practical conclusion: players drawn to turn-based grid combat and the anime roster have a clear reason to keep engaging with its battles. Whether that loop becomes compelling will depend on how much they enjoy its story and systems alongside the animations.

Is Super Robot Wars Y worth playing if you do not know the anime?
The game’s official description makes the crossover cast central, so familiarity with the series can add recognition to its appearances. The available sources do not establish that prior anime knowledge is required, however. If the grid-based tactical RPG format appeals to you, the game may still be worth considering on that basis; if the main draw is seeing favorite characters together, knowing the featured series is more likely to enhance that appeal.
What platforms is Super Robot Wars Y on?
Bandai Namco and platform listings identify PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. What does the base game include, and what about DLC?
Nintendo’s US store lists SUPER ROBOT WARS Y for Switch as well as expansion packs, and Steam also presents DLC and expansion products. That establishes that add-ons are sold on those storefronts, but the listings and information cited here do not settle every edition’s contents, the full set of included missions or series, or compatibility across platforms. Super Robot Wars Y is easiest to recommend to players who want a mecha crossover in a turn-based grid RPG and value animated battle sequences. MeriStation’s praise for those animations is balanced by its concerns about reading load, interface clarity and standard-difficulty challenge. Those trade-offs make the game’s appeal specific rather than universal: the crossover and combat presentation are the draw, while the amount of text and the feel of the systems are worth weighing before you buy.
