On October 18, 2024, Surgent Studios said it was putting work in its games division on hiatus while it sought funding for its next project. The studio also said team members had been put on notice for redundancy. Contemporary reporting said Surgent was looking for a publisher and had a prototype that had not received a greenlight.
What Surgent Studios announced
Surgent’s statement, reproduced by Nintendo Life on October 18, 2024, said: “We’ve decided to put the work of the Surgent games division on hiatus while we secure funding for our next project. In the meantime, we’ve unfortunately had to put our team on notice for redundancy.”

The announcement concerned the games division’s work and funding for a next project. It did not give a number of employees affected or state how much funding the studio needed.
Why the studio was seeking a publisher
GamesBeat’s October 18, 2024 report said Surgent had not found a partner for its next game. A prototype existed, but the project had not been greenlit. That reporting also said earlier layoffs followed Tales of Kenzera: ZAU performing below expectations; that characterization is GamesBeat’s reporting, not a financial disclosure from Surgent.

What the hiatus means—and what it does not establish
The 2024 notice describes a pause in work by Surgent’s games division while the studio sought funding, alongside a redundancy notice to the team. The sources do not establish the number of people affected, the funding sought, or what ultimately happened to the paused prototype.
It should not be read as a description of Surgent’s current staffing or all of its creative work. The studio’s official project listing currently includes Tales of Kenzera: ZAU (2024), Dead Take (2025), and FixForce (2026). Those later listings show subsequent projects, but do not clarify the outcome of the 2024 prototype or redundancy notice.
Surgent Studios’ current vacancies status
Surgent’s About page currently says the studio is not accepting applications and lists no vacancies. This is a changeable status and does not explain what happened to the team members placed on notice in 2024.
