Supermassive’s July 2025 announcement paired a consultation expected to affect 36 employees with a delay from October 2, 2025, to the first half of 2026. Those were concurrent announcements; the available reporting does not establish that the layoffs caused the delay. A separate consultation began in August 2026, with later reporting attributing a count of more than 70 people leaving to a former employee.
What happened to Directive 8020?
In July 2025, Supermassive Games announced a redundancy consultation expected to affect 36 employees and moved Directive 8020 from its planned October 2, 2025 release to the first half of 2026. The studio said the additional time would help it deliver the best experience. The announcements establish that the consultation and delay happened at the same time, not that one caused the other. Windows Central reported the July 2025 announcement.

The first-half window was later replaced by a firm date. Bandai Namco announced on February 10, 2026 that the game would launch May 12; its May 12 launch announcement confirms it was released that day.

What is Directive 8020 about?
Bandai Namco describes Directive 8020 as a cinematic sci-fi survival horror game. The colony ship Cassiopeia crash-lands on Tau Ceti f, where its crew faces an alien lifeform that imitates its prey. Lashana Lynch performs pilot Brianna Young.
The announced gameplay features include branching choices, real-time threats, stealth, and improvised weapons. Turning Points lets players revisit decisions in the story tree. The game also includes Movie Night, a local couch co-op mode for up to five players. Online multiplayer was described as a post-launch update in the publisher’s launch announcement; its present status is not confirmed there. How are the 2025 and 2026 layoffs different?
They were separate redundancy events, more than a year apart. The 36 figure relates to the consultation announced in July 2025; it is not a total for the later round.
On August 11, 2026, Supermassive began another consultation, expected to affect up to 75 people. The studio’s stated rationale, as quoted by PC Gamer, was: “This is a necessary step to help ensure the sustainability of the company.” “Up to 75” was the forecast for that consultation, not a confirmed final count.

On October 6, 2026, VGC reported that former IT and facilities director Frank Tindle wrote on LinkedIn that “More than 70 brilliant people are leaving Supermassive.” That is Tindle’s reported statement, not a studio-confirmed final number. VGC’s report also quoted him describing departing colleagues across development, art, production, QA, and operations.

The announcements and reports establish the timing of the delay and the two consultations, but do not establish a financial cause for either round of cuts, a link between the 2025 cuts and the delay, or the effect of the layoffs on the game’s development. The sources cited here also do not establish a final redundancy count for the 2026 consultation, game sales, or the current status of the planned online multiplayer update. It would be misleading to infer those facts from the timing alone.
