Yes, GPU-accelerated PhysX is back on GeForce RTX 50-series cards—but only for a curated list of older games. Nvidia’s Game Ready Driver 591.44, released in December 2025, added targeted support for nine legacy 32-bit titles. It did not restore universal GPU PhysX compatibility across every older game.

That distinction matters: if your game is on Nvidia’s supported list, updating the driver may restore effects and performance that were unavailable on RTX 50 at launch. If it is not, the game may continue running PhysX on the CPU.

The short version

  • PhysX was not universally restored on RTX 50-series GPUs.
  • Driver 591.44 introduced game-specific support for nine older 32-bit titles.
  • Unlisted PhysX games may still use CPU-based simulation or have reduced or disabled effects.
  • You do not need an older Nvidia card for a game covered by the new profiles.
  • Legacy PhysX alone is not a sensible reason to buy an RTX 50 card.

Nvidia’s implementation is best understood as a compatibility fix delivered through individual game profiles, not as a return to the old system-wide behavior.

Why RTX 50 owners lost legacy GPU PhysX

PhysX is a physics-simulation technology used for effects such as cloth, smoke, debris and particles. It predates the RTX brand: the technology originated with Ageia, which Nvidia acquired in 2008. Nvidia subsequently integrated PhysX support into GeForce hardware, making dedicated PhysX accelerator cards unnecessary for compatible games. These historical details are reported by PCWorld.

For years, some older PC games could offload their PhysX calculations to a GeForce GPU. Early RTX 50-series support did not provide the same general GPU acceleration for certain legacy 32-bit PhysX games. Those calculations instead ran on the CPU, which could reduce performance or prevent some advanced effects from appearing compared with older GeForce generations.

It is therefore misleading to say that RTX 50 cards lost every form of PhysX. The more accurate description is that general GPU acceleration for certain older 32-bit PhysX games was unavailable. Nvidia later restored it selectively.

The nine games supported by Driver 591.44

The December 2025 Game Ready Driver 591.44 was reported to add “Custom Support” for these nine games:

Game PhysX relevance Status in the reported driver
Alice: Madness Returns Legacy GPU PhysX effects Listed for Driver 591.44
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Legacy PhysX compatibility concern Listed for Driver 591.44
Batman: Arkham City Prominent optional PhysX effects Listed for Driver 591.44
Batman: Arkham Origins Prominent optional PhysX effects Listed for Driver 591.44
Borderlands 2 Well-known enhanced PhysX effects Listed for Driver 591.44
Mafia II Legacy GPU PhysX effects Listed for Driver 591.44
Metro 2033 Legacy PhysX support Listed for Driver 591.44
Metro: Last Light Legacy PhysX support Listed for Driver 591.44
Mirror’s Edge Legacy PhysX support Listed for Driver 591.44

Batman: Arkham City, Batman: Arkham Origins and Borderlands 2 are likely to be among the most visibly affected because their optional PhysX features are relatively prominent. That does not mean every listed game will deliver identical performance gains or that every version of each game will behave perfectly.

What “Custom Support” actually means

The important word is custom. Nvidia appears to have created a compatibility treatment for each supported title rather than restoring a universal mechanism that automatically covers all legacy PhysX games.

That explains the “kind of” qualification. The nine-game list is the supported scope reported for Driver 591.44. An older game missing from that list should not be expected to switch automatically from CPU PhysX to GPU PhysX after a driver update.

A game can also launch successfully while its advanced effects remain disabled. PhysX settings are usually controlled inside the game, and the exact behavior can vary with the executable, patch level, storefront version, mods and unofficial fixes.

This is also separate from RTX ray tracing. PhysX is a physics-simulation system that was used in older games; ray tracing is a rendering technique. Modern Nvidia references to physics, AI simulation or “PhysicsX” should not be confused with the legacy game feature discussed here.

How RTX 50 owners should update and test

  1. Identify the exact game. Compare it with the nine-title list above. Do not assume that a remaster, rerelease or alternate executable is covered simply because the original game is listed.
  2. Install a current Nvidia driver. Driver 591.44 is the version reported to introduce the profiles, not necessarily the latest driver available today. Use the official Nvidia GeForce driver portal or the Nvidia App to obtain a current compatible release.
  3. Check the game’s own settings. Confirm that PhysX, advanced PhysX effects or the equivalent option is enabled. Some games offer separate settings for high-quality particles, cloth, debris or other effects.
  4. Test a repeatable scene. Compare the same level or effect with PhysX enabled and disabled. Look for changes in particles, smoke, debris, cloth and other simulation-heavy effects.
  5. Check performance without assuming a fixed gain. Results depend on the game, resolution, graphics settings, CPU and effect being rendered. The available report mentions higher frame rates and restored effects but does not provide benchmark figures.

A clean driver installation is not required merely because you want the PhysX profile. Consider it only when troubleshooting an existing driver problem or persistent installation corruption.

If PhysX still runs on the CPU

Work through these checks before considering additional hardware:

  • Confirm that the installed driver is new enough to include the targeted support.
  • Confirm that the exact title and executable match one of the supported games.
  • Check whether the game is using a 32-bit executable and whether its own PhysX option is enabled.
  • Temporarily disable overlays, mods and unofficial patches, since they can alter launch behavior or executable detection.
  • Try the current driver rather than assuming that 591.44 remains the best choice for every system.
  • Compare the game with and without advanced effects enabled; successful game launch alone does not prove GPU PhysX is active.

If the title is not supported, continued CPU PhysX may be expected. A modern CPU can make that acceptable in some games, while particularly demanding scenes may still show lower performance or missing effects.

What about Batman: Arkham Asylum?

The original report said Nvidia planned to add Batman: Arkham Asylum during the first half of 2026. The available material does not verify whether that support was ultimately delivered in a later driver.

Do not treat Arkham Asylum as part of the confirmed nine-game list without checking current Nvidia release notes or driver documentation. Nvidia’s driver portal is the appropriate place to look for the current driver and any updated compatibility information.

Do you need an older Nvidia GPU?

Usually, no. If you play one of the nine listed games, updating the driver is the sensible first step. Buying another card is unnecessary solely to obtain PhysX support for a title Nvidia now covers.

Before the targeted support returned, some enthusiasts used a second, older Nvidia GPU to handle legacy PhysX. That remains a possible workaround for unsupported games, but it is a poor-value solution for most players. It adds power consumption, heat, driver and display-configuration complexity, and possible motherboard, case-clearance and power-supply constraints. It also does not guarantee that every game or version will behave correctly.

For readers choosing a new GPU, current-game performance, price, VRAM, power use, ray-tracing support, upscaling, frame generation and broader software compatibility should matter far more than a selective fix for a handful of older titles. Nvidia’s official RTX 50-series page is relevant for current product information, but legacy PhysX should not be the primary buying justification.

What this means for other GPU owners

AMD and Intel GPU owners should not interpret this development as a general reason to change platforms. The issue concerns Nvidia-specific GPU acceleration in a small group of older PC games.

CPU PhysX may still allow an affected game to run on another platform, depending on the title and system. Modern physics systems used by contemporary games are also separate technologies. Neither modern game physics nor CPU PhysX should be described as equivalent to the legacy Nvidia GPU effects in these titles.

Verdict

PhysX is back on RTX 50 only where Nvidia has explicitly added support. Driver 591.44 restored GPU acceleration for nine selected older games, which is welcome news for owners of those classics. But it is a compatibility patch, not a revival of PhysX as a universal RTX feature.

If your game is listed, update through Nvidia’s current driver channel and verify the in-game setting. If it is not listed, expect CPU PhysX unless Nvidia adds a profile later—and do not buy an older card or an RTX 50 card solely for this feature.
