Keep a turnable buffer around your character, lead the drones through open lanes, and use traps or defensive items after the swarm commits to your route. Keyboard/mouse and supported controllers both work, but the Steam listing says the developers recommend a controller. Because a complete button map is not published, verify the current bindings on the in-game controls screen rather than relying on an assumed WASD or trigger layout.
Swarm Me is a minimalist, top-down horde-survival arena from KBGS. Its official description frames the loop clearly: “A minimalist horde survival arena where you’re hunted by an endless swarm of drones – kite the horde, bait them into deadly traps, upgrade your defenses, use special items and survive as long as you can.” The swarm becomes denser, faster and more dangerous each minute, so every movement decision is also a decision about how much escape space you will have later.

What controls are available in Swarm Me?
Swarm Me supports keyboard and mouse, and the developer describes the game as a twin-stick-style horde-survival title. Steam lists keyboard-only play plus partial support for Xbox Controllers, DualShock Controllers connected by USB, and DualSense Controllers connected by USB. The store page explicitly says, “The developers recommend playing this game with a controller.”

Those statements establish the available control methods, but they do not publish a definitive button-by-button layout. Do not assume that a particular key, stick, trigger or bumper performs a specific action. Open the current controls screen from the main menu or pause menu, note the displayed bindings, and test movement and firing in a safe moment before beginning a serious run.

What the control information means in practice
- Keyboard and mouse: supported for players who prefer digital movement and mouse aiming.
- Xbox controller: supported according to Steam’s feature listing.
- DualShock and DualSense: supported when connected by USB, rather than being guaranteed as wireless devices.
- Controller recommendation: this is the developer’s guidance, not a published latency test or proof that every player will perform better with a pad.
Since the game is built around continuous movement and curved kiting, the useful question is not whether one device has a universally superior score. It is whether your chosen setup lets you turn early, aim while moving and remain comfortable for a long run.
Keyboard/mouse or controller: which should you use?
| Consideration | Keyboard and mouse | Controller |
|---|---|---|
| Curved kiting | Digital movement can feel immediate, but you may need frequent directional corrections to maintain a smooth arc. | Analog input naturally supports gradual turns and variable movement, which suits broad circles around a swarm. |
| Movement and aiming together | Separate keyboard movement and mouse aiming can be comfortable if you already play twin-stick-style games this way. | Two-stick control is the intended-feeling arrangement for many players, provided the device is supported and connected correctly. |
| Long-run comfort | Depends on your keyboard angle, mouse space and ability to hold movement keys without tension. | Often easier for extended sessions, but stick comfort and button reach vary by player. |
| Setup requirements | Works with a standard PC keyboard and mouse. | Steam lists Xbox support and USB support for DualShock and DualSense controllers. |
| Evidence of a winner | No measured latency, sensitivity or survival-rate comparison is published. | The developer recommends a controller, but that recommendation is not a benchmark. |
Choose the device that lets you keep your attention on the swarm rather than on your hands. If an analog stick makes it easier to hold a wide arc, use a controller. If mouse aiming gives you more confidence while changing direction, keyboard/mouse remains a valid option. Switching devices will not fix a route that has already collapsed; spacing and path planning matter more than the input label.
Set up a run before the swarm becomes dangerous
- Open the controls menu. Record the actual movement, aim, fire, trap, special-item and pause bindings shown by your current build. Check them again after a patch or when changing input devices.
- Confirm the controller is recognized. For a DualShock or DualSense, use a USB connection because that is the connection type identified in the Steam listing. Test every action before entering a difficult mode.
- Learn the arena’s open lanes. Identify wide areas where you can turn and narrower passages that could become traps. Do not begin a long route without knowing where it widens again.
- Decide what your escape side is. While moving, keep one side of the character pointed toward a second route. A pickup or trap is not worth entering a corner with no exit.
- Match your plan to the mode. Weapon ammunition, health costs, traps and special items have different importance in the four listed modes, so do not use one universal spending pattern.
How to dodge a large group step by step
1. Keep a buffer instead of sprinting in a straight panic line
The official loop is to “kite the horde,” and the developer describes constant movement as central to the game. Move early enough that you can turn before the front of the swarm touches you. A steady, broad arc is safer than a last-second straight-line sprint because it preserves options on both sides.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWatch the distance to the nearest drones, not only the center of the mass. If the front edge is steadily shrinking your buffer, start the next curve immediately. Waiting until contact is imminent usually forces a sharp turn, which is exactly when the swarm can surround you.
2. Lead the swarm where you want it to go
Do not treat the drones as a random wall that you must outrun. Your route determines their route. Travel along the edge of an open lane, allowing the group to compress behind you, then angle toward the next safe area. This bends the swarm around the arena instead of allowing it to spread across every available path.

- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
Keep looking at the destination of your next turn. A route is useful only if it remains open when you arrive. If a second cluster is closing that lane, choose a wider curve now rather than trying to squeeze through later.
3. Use hazards while the swarm is committed
Swarm Me specifically asks players to bait enemies into deadly traps. Named defensive options include Fire Wall, Electric Fence, Laser Turret and Plasma Turret. The reliable sequence is to make the group follow your established line, trigger or place a defense where the drones are already committed, and continue moving through the space that the defense creates.
Do not stop to admire the damage or wait for every drone to die. A defense buys time and space; it does not replace a route. Keep moving as the swarm reaches the hazard, because surviving enemies will continue to close from behind.
4. Preserve a second exit
Before crossing a narrow section, identify where you will turn if the swarm accelerates. This is especially important when approaching a trap, pickup or defensive item. Enter only when you can name a fallback lane that is not already covered by the group.
One clear exit is the minimum. Two possible exits are safer because a sudden speed increase or a new cluster cannot invalidate your entire plan at once. If an item sits at the end of a dead end, leave it until the surrounding route is clear.

5. Wait for the swarm to stretch before reversing
A compact group is difficult to cut through. Keep a consistent arc until the front has traveled farther than the rear, creating a longer tail. Then reverse direction through the widest gap, not through the densest section. This timing follows from the game’s emphasis on kiting and route control; it is a practical tactic rather than a documented developer rule.
After the reversal, immediately establish another arc. A turn is not a pause. If you stop after crossing the gap, the trailing drones can close the distance you just created.
6. Spend movement and defenses according to the current mode
The four listed modes change what a safe route looks like. In a weapon-focused mode, you can use firing and ammunition to reduce pressure, but movement still keeps you alive. In a mode where firing drains health, shooting is a resource decision rather than a free action. In the no-weapons mode, traps and special items must do the work, making route design and timing even more important. SWARM is presented as a hardcore survival mode, so preserving space is generally more valuable than taking a risky shortcut for a small reward.
Using each defensive option without getting trapped
Fire Wall
Use a Fire Wall to divide the swarm’s approach or punish a committed crossing. Place it across the route the drones are already following, then move along your escape lane. Do not place it directly in front of yourself unless you have checked that the route around it remains open.
Electric Fence
An Electric Fence is most useful when you can make the group approach in a predictable line. Bend your movement so the drones bunch near the fence, then continue toward open ground. Treat the fence as a temporary boundary, not as permission to stand still.

Laser Turret
A Laser Turret can cover a direction while you turn through another lane. Set it where the swarm will pass, keep your own route moving, and avoid circling so tightly that the turret or the remaining drones removes your exit.
Plasma Turret
A Plasma Turret is another way to damage a committed group while you create distance. The placement decision is more important than the exact damage: use it where the swarm is going, not where it was several seconds earlier.
The available defenses are named in the game’s store information, but no public source establishes their exact damage, duration or cooldown values. Use the in-game display for those details and plan around the space each defense opens rather than an assumed number of kills.
How the four modes change your movement priorities
| Mode | What is listed | Movement priority |
|---|---|---|
| WAVE: classic | Classic weapons and ammunition drops. | Keep a firing lane while kiting; collect ammunition only when the pickup does not collapse your escape route. |
| WAVE: health-drain firing | Firing drains health. | Do not shoot automatically. Fire when it prevents a dangerous compression, and preserve health for unavoidable damage or escapes. |
| WAVE: no weapons | No weapons; traps and special items only. | Plan the route first, then bait the swarm into defenses. A dead-end pickup is usually a poor trade. |
| SWARM | Hardcore survival. | Favor wide lanes, early turns and conservative item collection because the cost of a late mistake is higher. |
The mode names and descriptions establish the broad rules, not a guaranteed best build. Let the live arena state decide whether a weapon, trap or pickup is worth the detour.
Common movement mistakes and fixes
Running in a straight line until the edge
Symptom: the swarm reaches the same wall or boundary as you do. Fix: begin a broad turn while you still have room, and keep a second lane visible before committing to the next direction.

Turning too sharply
Symptom: the front of the group catches you during a sudden reversal. Fix: maintain a steady arc long enough to stretch the formation, then cross the widest gap instead of pivoting through the center.
Stopping on top of a trap
Symptom: the defense activates, but surviving drones surround you while you watch it work. Fix: treat activation as the start of your escape, not the end of your movement.
Chasing every pickup
Symptom: a useful item leads you into a narrow lane with no fallback. Fix: wait until the swarm is stretched and the route beyond the pickup has a visible exit.
Firing by reflex in the health-drain mode
Symptom: your health falls even though the swarm is not yet threatening contact. Fix: reserve fire for moments when it opens space or prevents a collapse, and let movement do the routine work.
Assuming a controller binding
Symptom: a button does something unexpected during a crowded moment. Fix: pause, open the current controls screen, and verify the binding. Published support does not equal a universal layout across builds.
A practical drill for learning the arena
- Start in the least demanding mode available and spend the opening minutes moving in large circles without chasing rewards.
- Practice changing direction only after the swarm develops a visible tail.
- Choose one hazard and deliberately lead the group across it while maintaining a separate escape lane.
- Repeat the route in the opposite direction so you know whether the arena offers a second viable loop.
- Move to a mode with stricter resource rules and repeat the same drill, this time deciding when firing, traps or special items are worth spending.
This practice teaches the transferable skills the game demands: reading the front edge, preserving turning room, shaping the swarm’s path and leaving a route before the current one closes.
