No: Joy-Con 2 sticks do not use Hall effect. Nintendo of America executive Nate Bihldorff confirmed that in an interview reported by Nintendo Life. Nintendo says the sticks were redesigned to be larger, smoother, and more durable than the original Switch Joy-Con sticks—but neither fact proves that Joy-Con 2 will drift or that it will not.
Are Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 sticks Hall effect?
No. Asked directly whether Joy-Con 2 sticks are Hall effect, Nintendo of America executive Nate Bihldorff replied, “They’re not Hall Effect sticks, but they feel really good,” according to Nintendo Life’s April 7, 2025 report.

That answer rules out Hall effect, but it does not identify the sensor technology Nintendo uses instead. The available statements do not establish whether the sticks use potentiometers, TMR, or another design, so claims about a specific alternative—or Nintendo’s reason for choosing it—would be speculation.
Does that mean Joy-Con 2 will drift?
No conclusion about long-term drift follows from the sensor type alone. Nintendo’s official developer interview says the Joy-Con 2 sticks were redesigned from scratch and are larger, smoother, and “more durable” than the original Switch Joy-Con sticks. That is Nintendo’s description of the design, not a published durability test or a measured drift rate. The available sources do not quantify Joy-Con 2 drift over time or establish that drift is inevitable—or that the redesign has eliminated it.

- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 developer interview is useful for understanding what changed, but it does not name the stick sensor. The Hall effect confirmation comes from Bihldorff’s answer as reported by Nintendo Life, rather than from that official interview.
What can you do if a Joy-Con 2 stick moves by itself?

- Contact Nintendo for service if the problem persists. Nintendo UK says to arrange repair for the affected Joy-Con without sending the console; Nintendo Japan advises sending the affected controller for inspection or repair. Use your country’s Nintendo support page for current instructions.

Will Nintendo repair a drifting Joy-Con 2 for free?
Repair eligibility depends on where you live and the circumstances. Nintendo UK’s current page describes no-charge repairs for qualifying purchases in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, including certain wear-related responsiveness problems. It also lists exclusions, including some cases involving damage, misuse, unauthorized modifications or repairs, and other stated conditions. This is not a global guarantee: check the current Nintendo support page for your country and confirm eligibility before sending a controller.

Is the Switch 2 Pro Controller an alternative?
The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is a separate gamepad option if you prefer a full controller to Joy-Con 2, especially for longer sessions. TechRadar’s reviewer found it more comfortable for extended play; that is a reviewer’s comfort assessment, not evidence that the Pro Controller prevents or fixes Joy-Con drift. Nintendo’s developer interview describes its sticks as quieter during fast movement to the edge, but does not provide a comparative durability measurement.
Joy-Con 2 remain the controllers designed for attached and detached play with the console. Choosing a separate controller is a question of format and comfort, not a demonstrated solution to Joy-Con 2 drift.
