Customers reported canceled Nintendo Switch 2 preorders at Walmart, Target and Best Buy in the run-up to the console’s June 5, 2025 launch. Those reports did not establish how many orders were affected, a shared cause, or that every order at any of the retailers was canceled. If you’re wondering whether your preorder is still active, check its status directly with the retailer before making other plans.
What was reported about canceled Switch 2 preorders?
The Associated Press reported cancellation notices amid the April 2025 preorder rush. A June 2 roundup later relayed customer claims involving Walmart, Target, Best Buy and GameStop. The available coverage does not give a verified cancellation count or establish an official, common explanation from the retailers. These were customer reports, not confirmation that all orders—or all orders at the three retailers in this headline—were affected.

Walmart told the AP, “The excitement around this online preorder was incredible,” and said listings “sold out quickly due to high demand.” Those comments concerned the April 24 preorder launch and sellout; they do not explain later cancellation reports. What to do if you think your order was canceled
- Check the retailer account. Open your orders or purchases page and look for the Switch 2 order’s current status. Check for a cancellation notice, a pending action, or a revised release or delivery date.
- Search the email address used at checkout. Look in your inbox and spam or junk folders for a message from the retailer. Follow any request to confirm a change or update payment details only through the retailer’s official account or support channel.
- Contact the retailer about that specific order. Use the order’s support link or the retailer’s official customer-service channel. Ask whether the order is active, why it was canceled if it is not, whether it can be reinstated, and what alternatives are available.
- Do not assume an old restock notice is still valid. A June 2025 report described a possible Walmart reorder opportunity, but it was time-limited and is not a continuing guarantee. Check current retailer listings independently.
What Target’s preorder policy does—and does not—explain
Target’s general preorder help says an order may be canceled if a vendor changes the release date and the customer does not confirm the change when asked, or if an eligible payment authorization renewal fails. That policy is a reason to check Target account messages, email and payment status; it is not evidence that either scenario caused the Switch 2 cancellations reported in June 2025. What the launch-week alternatives were in June 2025
The retailers announced limited launch-period purchase options, but these dates have passed and do not establish stock today.
| Retailer | What was announced | What it means now |
|---|---|---|
| Target | Target said its April 24 preorders sold out in under two hours. Its May 29 announcement said limited in-store stock would be available June 5, 2025, with online sales beginning June 6. | Historical launch information only; it does not confirm current availability. |
| Best Buy | Best Buy announced that nearly all U.S. stores would open at 12:01 a.m. ET on June 5, 2025, for preorder pickup and limited walk-in purchases. | Historical launch information only; it does not confirm current availability. |
| Walmart | The AP reported Walmart expected another purchase opportunity at launch. A June 2 roundup relayed a possible short-term reorder path after customer cancellation claims. | Neither report establishes a continuing reorder option or remedy for an individual canceled order. |

How to look for a console now
If your order cannot be restored, check current console listings directly with retailers and confirm the price and availability before placing another order. The announcements about June 2025 launch stock are not live inventory updates. Focus first on finding the Switch 2 console itself; games and accessories are separate purchases and will not replace a canceled console order. Nintendo’s May 2025 financial briefing identified June 5, 2025, as the console’s release date. (Nintendo financial results briefing, May 8, 2025.)
