Which Switch 2 has a user-replaceable battery?
Nintendo says a forthcoming revised Switch 2 console will have a user-replaceable battery. The announcement concerns the revised model, not every Switch 2 already in owners’ hands. Nintendo’s support guidance tells customers to check whether their specific product and model contains a user-replaceable battery. Nintendo’s UK announcement and its battery-life support page do not establish that the planned kit will fit the current launch model.

The announcement covers territories where Nintendo of Europe does business, including the UK, EEA, Switzerland, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Nintendo expects the revised console to become available through Nintendo Store in October 2026, but calls that an estimate and says timing may change. Products are expected to transition as current versions sell out; during that changeover, Nintendo Store buyers cannot choose which version they receive, and retailer availability may vary.

The revised console is not announced as a runtime upgrade: Nintendo’s published capacity is slightly lower, and its announcement makes no claim that the change improves battery life. Nintendo lists the revised console at approximately 411 g, compared with approximately 401 g for the current console; with Joy-Con 2 attached, the figures are approximately 548 g and 534 g respectively. These are listed specifications, not evidence of longer play time. Nintendo says replacement battery kits will be sold through Nintendo Store in Europe in the future, but has not given a release date, price or cross-model compatibility details.

Can you replace a Switch 2 battery yourself?
Only treat it as a self-replacement if Nintendo identifies your exact model as having a user-replaceable battery and provides the appropriate battery kit and instructions for that model. The announcement concerns the revised console; it is not a general repair instruction for the launch model. Avoid opening a console or fitting an unverified part based only on the Switch 2 name.
Nintendo’s support guidance also advises checking battery-life improvement options before replacement. If the model is not identified as user-replaceable, or the correct official kit and procedure are not available, contact Nintendo support or an authorized service provider rather than assuming a kit for the revised console will fit.

Does replacing the battery void the warranty?
There is no single worldwide rule. Warranty consequences depend on where the console was sold, the applicable terms, who performed the work and what caused the problem. A user-replaceable design does not itself guarantee that battery replacement is covered at no cost or that every repair has no warranty effect.
United States and Canada
Nintendo of America’s hardware warranty is one year from purchase and requires proof of purchase. It covers defects in materials and workmanship; physical damage is not covered, though Nintendo or an authorized service center may still be able to service the console. Nintendo says it will not repair or replace a product found damaged by unauthorized modification or tampering. United Kingdom and Ireland
Nintendo of Europe’s warranty document specifies a 24-month manufacturer’s warranty from purchase for the UK, EEA excluding Spain and Portugal, and Switzerland. It excludes gradual loss of battery capacity or performance, and products opened, modified or repaired by anyone other than Nintendo or an authorized partner. Nintendo may offer paid repair or replacement for a non-covered issue at its discretion. The document says local statutory rights are additional to the manufacturer warranty. Japan
Nintendo Japan’s terms apply to products sold for Japan. For a console and hardware included in a set, the stated one-year period runs from the first setup date; for specified products bought separately, it runs from purchase. Defects arising under normal use are repaired without charge during that period. Nintendo notes that service can involve replacement parts or an exchange, and settings or saved data may be reset. What to do if your battery needs attention
- Identify the console. Check the model information and Nintendo’s support guidance to establish whether that particular unit has a user-replaceable battery.
- Check the local warranty. Use the terms for the country where the console was sold; do not apply a U.S., UK or Japanese rule to another market.
- Contact Nintendo or an authorized service provider. Start with local Nintendo support, especially if the console is under warranty or you are unsure whether opening it is permitted. Nintendo may offer service for a fee when a warranty has expired or the issue is excluded.
- Prepare for service carefully. Keep proof of purchase where required. Nintendo of Europe advises removing private data and backing up before sending a product, since data may be deleted during repair.
In the U.S. and Canada, owners can start a Switch 2 service request through Nintendo’s repair process. Nintendo says out-of-warranty or excluded problems may still be serviceable for a fee, but service is not a promise of free repair.
