Choose the Steam Deck OLED if you want a portable SteamOS PC built around your Steam library and PC-style controls and configuration. Neither is a universal winner: the right choice depends first on the games you want to play, then on how you prefer to play them.
The original question says “in 2025,” but this comparison reflects manufacturer information available as of October 8, 2026. Prices, stock and configurations vary by region and can change, so check local listings before buying.
Switch 2 or Steam Deck: what is the main difference?
These are not two versions of the same handheld. Switch 2 is Nintendo’s console, with a library of Switch 2 games and compatibility for some original Nintendo Switch games. Steam Deck OLED is a portable PC running SteamOS 3, designed around the Steam platform. Its PC ecosystem offers flexibility, but support can vary by game and software; do not assume every PC title works equally well.
Start by listing the games you most want to play. If they are Nintendo exclusives or particular Switch games, check their compatibility with Switch 2. If they are in your Steam library, check how each title runs and whether its controls and software support meet your needs on Steam Deck.
#1 Best Overall
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
How do the displays and designs compare?
| Feature | Nintendo Switch 2 | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | 7.9-inch LCD | 7.4-inch OLED touchscreen |
| Resolution | 1920×1080 in handheld mode | 1280×800 |
| HDR and refresh | HDR10; VRR up to 120 Hz | HDR; refresh rate up to 90 Hz |
| Listed weight | Approximately 1.18 lb with Joy-Con 2 attached | Approximately 640 g (about 1.41 lb) |
Those specifications describe different strengths, not a definitive picture-quality ranking. Switch 2 lists higher handheld resolution and a higher maximum refresh rate; Steam Deck OLED uses an OLED panel. Screen size, panel type, resolution and refresh rate can all affect the experience, and specs alone cannot establish which looks better to you.
Switch 2 can also output to a TV through its dock. Steam Deck is a handheld PC with SteamOS 3 and a KDE Plasma desktop mode, so it offers a different kind of flexibility from a console’s handheld, tabletop and TV modes.

Which has the games you want?
Choose Switch 2 for Nintendo games and compatible Switch titles
Switch 2 plays games made for Switch 2 and supports compatible physical and digital games from the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo cautions that some older titles may not work or may have partial functionality. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 technical specifications and game compatibility guidance for the specific games you care about before purchasing. Some titles have free updates or paid upgrades for Switch 2; compatibility does not mean every game gets an upgrade.
Choose Steam Deck OLED for a portable SteamOS PC
Steam Deck OLED is centered on Steam games and PC-style controls and configuration. That can make it the more natural choice if you already have a Steam library or want a handheld PC rather than a Nintendo console. But PC games and software can vary in support, so check the particular titles and tools you rely on instead of treating the Steam catalogue as a guarantee that everything will work as expected.

Which one is better for travel and battery life?
Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of battery life for Switch 2, depending on the game. Valve estimates approximately 3–12 hours for Steam Deck OLED, depending on content. These are manufacturer estimates, not results from a shared test: different games and usage conditions make the ranges unsuitable as a direct head-to-head battery verdict.
If you travel often, consider the games and settings you actually expect to use and look for runtime information measured under those same conditions. The listed weights favor Switch 2 on paper—about 1.18 lb with Joy-Con 2 attached versus approximately 640 g for Steam Deck OLED—but weight alone cannot predict comfort over a long session. Grip, controls and session length matter too.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
How much storage do they offer, and what cards do they use?
| Storage | Nintendo Switch 2 | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Internal storage | 256 GB UFS | 512 GB or 1 TB NVMe SSD |
| Expansion | microSD Express; Nintendo’s US specification page lists support up to 2 TB | UHS-I microSD slot |
The card standards are not interchangeable. Nintendo requires a microSD Express card for Switch 2 game-storage expansion. Its support guidance says conventional microSD cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from the original Switch, not to expand Switch 2 game storage. See Nintendo’s specifications and support guidance before buying a card. Steam Deck OLED instead has a UHS-I microSD slot.
What do they cost?
There is no current Nintendo price established here for a meaningful regional comparison. Valve’s May 27, 2026 update announced Steam Deck OLED prices of US$789 for the 512GB model and US$949 for the 1TB model; those are dated US price announcements, not a guarantee of today’s price or the price in another market. Valve’s product page and May 27, 2026 update provide the relevant listings and announcement.
For a fair buying comparison, check both storefronts for the same country and date, and account for storage tier, taxes, included accessories and any bundles. Do not infer a current Switch 2 price from an older listing or compare prices from different regions.
Which handheld should you buy?
Pick Switch 2 if…
- Nintendo games are the main reason you want a handheld.
- You want to play specific original Switch games and have verified they work as you expect.
- You value Nintendo’s handheld, tabletop and TV-play options and Joy-Con features.
Pick Steam Deck OLED if…
- You want a portable SteamOS PC centered on your Steam library.
- You value PC-style controls, configuration and desktop mode.
- You prefer the listed OLED display characteristics and have checked support for the games and software you need.
If travel battery life or price decides it
For battery life, compare evidence for the games and settings you will use rather than choosing from the manufacturers’ advertised range endpoints. For price, compare current local listings on the same date and at the storage tier you would actually buy.
