Switch 2 vs. Switch: Should You Upgrade?

Switch 2 adds exclusive games, a larger 1080p screen and 4K docked output, but costs more and has a shorter estimated battery range. Here’s when to upgrade—and when to keep your original Switch.

Upgrade to Nintendo Switch 2 if you want its exclusive games, a larger 1080p handheld screen or sharper TV output—and the current price fits your budget. Keep the original standard Switch if its library and performance meet your needs, or if longer estimated handheld battery life and your existing accessories matter more. Before deciding, check that your must-play games and peripherals work the way you expect on Switch 2.

How Switch 2 and the original Switch compare

Both are hybrid consoles for handheld and TV play, but Switch 2 brings a bigger, higher-resolution screen, stronger docked output, new games and different storage requirements. The comparison below is for the original standard Switch—not the OLED model or Switch Lite.

Feature Nintendo Switch 2 Original standard Switch
Handheld display 7.9-inch LCD; 1920 × 1080 resolution; HDR10 and VRR up to 120 Hz. Nintendo specifications 6.2-inch LCD; 1280 × 720 resolution. Nintendo Life comparison, May 11, 2026
TV output Docked output up to 3840 × 2160 (4K) at 60 fps; higher refresh rates are supported at selected lower resolutions. Nintendo specifications Lower-resolution docked output; it does not offer Switch 2’s 4K mode. Nintendo Life comparison, May 11, 2026
Games Plays Switch 2 games and compatible physical and digital Switch games. Some older titles may have compatibility issues. Plays its compatible Switch library, but not Switch 2-exclusive games.
Estimated battery life Approximately 2–6.5 hours, varying by game. Nintendo estimate Approximately 4.5–9 hours in Nintendo Life’s comparison; original Switch hardware revisions and use affect results. Nintendo Life comparison, May 11, 2026
Storage 256 GB internal storage, with some reserved for system use. Game storage expansion requires a microSD Express card, up to 2 TB. Uses standard microSD cards for storage expansion.
U.S. standard-console MSRP $499.99, effective September 1, 2026. This is Nintendo’s suggested retail price, not a guaranteed retailer price. Nintendo price notice Not stated in the cited current price notice; retailer prices and availability vary.

Battery figures are estimates, not guarantees: game, settings and hardware condition affect actual runtime. Switch 2’s LCD is larger and sharper than the standard Switch screen, but it does not provide OLED’s contrast. The Switch OLED remains a relevant alternative for someone who wants a Switch library and prioritizes handheld contrast over Switch 2-exclusive games.

Will your Switch games and account carry over?

Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Switch games, but compatibility is not universal. Hardware differences can prevent some titles from working or leave parts of a game unsupported; compatibility can also change with updates. Look up each essential game in Nintendo’s current compatibility resource before buying. Nintendo Life’s May 11, 2026 guide provides an independent overview of exceptions, but Nintendo’s title-level resource is the better check for a particular game.

Which original Switch accessories work with Switch 2?

Some existing equipment can be reused, but compatibility depends on the accessory and how you use it. Nintendo’s compatibility and accessory comparison lists the supported uses.

Should you upgrade in your situation?

“I own a launch Switch — should I buy a Switch 2?”

Consider upgrading if you want Switch 2 games or a meaningful step up in handheld screen size, resolution or TV output. First verify your essential Switch games and accessories, then compare the current local price with the value of those improvements. If your current library still satisfies you, there is no need to replace a working console just because a newer model exists.

“I recently bought a Switch 1 — should I get a Switch 2?”

Keeping the recent purchase is reasonable if you bought it for games you want to play now and Switch 2 exclusives are not a priority. Move sooner only if a specific Switch 2 game or feature is important enough to justify the additional cost; otherwise, waiting lets you get more value from the system you already own.

“I only play in docked mode on my TV — should I buy a Switch 2?”

Switch 2 is the stronger fit if you have a 4K TV and care about output up to 4K at 60 fps, or if you want Switch 2 games. The benefit matters less if you are satisfied with your current picture and library. Check accessory compatibility too: the original Switch dock cannot serve as the Switch 2 dock.

“I only play in handheld mode — should I get a Switch 2?”

Switch 2 offers a larger 7.9-inch 1080p display, but its estimated battery range is shorter than the original standard Switch’s estimate. Choose it if screen size, resolution or new games outweigh time between charges. If you value OLED contrast, note that Switch 2’s screen is LCD; the Switch OLED may better match that specific preference if Switch 2 exclusives are not essential.

What should you budget for?

Nintendo’s U.S. standard-console MSRP is $499.99 as of September 1, 2026; Nintendo’s notice says the earlier U.S. MSRP was $449.99. The current figure is a suggested retail price for the United States, not a universal price or a promise about any retailer’s offer. Compare local prices and bundles where you live, and include any replacement accessories or storage you actually need. If you expand game storage, make sure the card is microSD Express rather than a standard microSD card.
