Switch emulator Eden’s big v0.2.0 update adds useful features—back up your saves first

Eden’s v0.2.0 is the major update; v0.2.1 is the hotfix. Here’s how to protect saves from path changes and orphaned-profile problems before upgrading.

Eden’s major update is v0.2.0, released May 13, 2026; v0.2.1 followed on June 1 as a stability-focused hotfix. The update does not automatically wipe every save, but Eden’s release notes warn about save-path changes, profile migration and “orphaned profiles.” Export or copy your data before upgrading, then verify an important game before removing the old installation.

Eden’s big update is v0.2.0; v0.2.1 is the follow-up hotfix

The release most likely behind the “big update” headlines is Eden v0.2.0, the project’s first-anniversary release. The latest stable release identified on Eden’s official release page as of August 16, 2026 was v0.2.1, released June 1.

That distinction matters. v0.2.0 introduced the substantial feature and compatibility work. v0.2.1 is a hotfix intended to address crashes and regressions, not a broad CPU- or GPU-performance overhaul.

What v0.2.0 changes for everyday users

  • Updates and DLC: Eden can use updates and downloadable content without installing them into NAND.
  • Game-library views: Desktop users get grid and icon-only layouts in addition to the traditional list presentation.
  • Mod importing: Mods can be imported directly from a folder or ZIP file.
  • Turbo and Slow modes: New toggles make it easier to speed up or slow down emulation when appropriate.
  • Performance and memory work: The release includes memory-synchronization and shader-compilation improvements, though results remain dependent on the game, hardware and platform.
  • Data Manager: Eden can inspect, import, export and clear commonly used data. It also adds a way to change the save-data location.
  • Profile handling: Eden can detect orphaned profiles, while experimental Ryujinx save-data linking is available for certain migration scenarios.
  • Android improvements: The update includes control, rotation, overlay and driver-related changes.
  • Graphics and compatibility: The changelog contains renderer and game-specific fixes, plus a shortened compatibility list.

These are improvements to Eden itself, not a guarantee that every title will run faster or more reliably. Some features, particularly emulator-to-emulator save linking, remain experimental.

Nintendo Joy-Con (L/R) - Neon Red/Neon Blue
  • Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
  • The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
  • Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
  • Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.

What v0.2.1 fixes

The later hotfix focuses on specific stability problems. According to its official changelog, it:

  • Updates the Windows auto-updater to account for the installed build ID.
  • Fixes crashes and errors involving large game libraries or external content files.
  • Fixes crashes on 12th-generation Intel CPUs.
  • Fixes a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe freeze involving the native controller applet.
  • Addresses a rare shutdown-audio problem.
  • Fixes mods that expect a real DefaultDataSpace value.
  • Reduces minor contention involving emulated-controller threads.

v0.2.1 remains on SDL2. Do not install it expecting a universal frame-rate boost.

Why you should back up saves first

The documented risk is not that a normal update routinely deletes everyone’s progress. The more realistic danger is that Eden points at a different location, associates saves with a different profile, or exposes data that it previously could not identify.

1. The save path may change

Eden supports changing where save data is stored. If the new installation uses a different NAND or save path, an existing save can appear to be missing even though its files still exist elsewhere.

2. Profiles can become orphaned

Eden’s profile database determines which user profile owns particular saves. Its release notes warn that installations using a non-default NAND location may show an “orphaned profiles” dialog. Deleting or copying the wrong profile folders can make recovery harder, so do not begin cleanup without an independent backup.

3. Ryujinx linking is not a backup

Ryujinx save-data linking was still described as testing, particularly on Windows. Treat it as a migration experiment—not as the only copy of your progress.

The safest backup: use Eden’s Data Manager

Menu labels vary by platform and build, but the documented workflow is generally:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Eden.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Open Manage Eden Data or Data Manager.
  4. Choose the export or backup control.
  5. Save the archive outside Eden’s installation directory.
  6. Copy it to a second location, such as an external drive or another computer.

The v0.2.0 release notes say the Data Manager can export and import commonly used directories and is intended to work with Android’s import/export system. Depending on the build, an export may include configuration, firmware, installed content, mods and other data in addition to saves.

Do not uninstall the old version until the new one launches successfully and at least one important save has been tested.

Make a manual per-game backup too

Eden’s official save-import guide documents this desktop method:

  1. Launch Eden and start the game once, creating or loading a save so the title directory exists.
  2. Close the game.
  3. Right-click the title in Eden’s game list.
  4. Select Open Save Data Location.
  5. Copy the complete contents of the opened directory to a safe location.
  6. Preserve the folder structure and file names.

Copy the whole title-specific directory, not just one apparent save file. Games can use multiple files. Eden has previously fixed a problem where Open Save Data Location could open the wrong folder, so check the title, profile, timestamps and contents before treating the copy as valid.

Where Eden’s data usually lives

Backing up the program ZIP, executable or AppImage alone is not enough. Saves normally live in Eden’s user-data directory.

Platform or setup Typical location or note
Linux ~/.local/share/eden
Windows %APPDATA%/eden
Portable mode A user directory beside the Eden executable or AppImage can hold local data.
Steam Deck Game Mode and Desktop Mode can make file access confusing; use Eden’s data tools or open folders from the application rather than assuming a Windows-style path.
Android Storage access varies by Android version, device and build. Export before uninstalling or changing the installation.

Eden’s quick-start guide explains that creating a user directory beside the executable can enable portable operation. A custom NAND or save path is convenient, but it adds another location to record and protect.

How to update without making the situation worse

  1. Close Eden and every running game.
  2. Export Eden data through Manage Eden Data or Data Manager.
  3. Make a second copy of the relevant save directory or complete user-data directory.
  4. Record your current version and save/NAND path.
  5. Download Eden from its official downloads page or official Forgejo release page.
  6. Install or extract the new build without deleting the existing user-data directory.
  7. Launch the new version and check the game library, profile and save path.
  8. Open one or two important games and verify their saves in-game.
  9. Only then archive or remove the old application build.

On Android, do not uninstall the existing app before exporting data. Installing the new APK over the existing installation is generally the safer update pattern, but device and build behavior can differ.

If Eden reports “orphaned profiles”

Stop before deleting anything. Eden’s warning is a recovery situation, not a prompt to wipe every unfamiliar folder.

  1. Close Eden and back up the entire Eden data and NAND directories before changing them.
  2. Note which profiles Eden marks as valid or orphaned.
  3. Identify the largest and most recently modified profile directory, but do not assume an all-zero profile is correct.
  4. Follow Eden’s release-note guidance and remove only profiles identified as invalid, preserving valid profiles.
  5. Copy known-good saves into the valid profile when appropriate.
  6. If saves are missing, inspect older profile folders from the backup and test copies—not the originals.
  7. Launch the affected game and confirm the save in its own load or continue screen.
  8. Keep the untouched backup until recovery is complete.

Because profile layouts and paths can differ, avoid blanket instructions to delete or merge folders. If you are unsure which profile owns the save, preserve the original data and work only on duplicates.

How to restore a save after an update

For desktop builds, Eden’s documented import procedure is:

  1. Start the game once in the new Eden installation to create its save directory.
  2. Exit the game.
  3. Right-click the title and choose Open Save Data Location.
  4. Copy the backed-up save contents into that directory without changing the layout.
  5. Launch the game and verify the result through its own load or continue screen.

Eden’s official guide lists Android save importing as TBD. Do not assume the desktop procedure is an officially documented Android workflow; use the platform’s export/import controls and preserve a separate backup.

Stable or Nightly?

For most players, choose Stable. Eden’s downloads page separates Stable and Nightly channels. Nightly builds can contain newer fixes and experimental features, but they are less thoroughly tested and therefore have a greater regression risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a particular game requires Nightly, keep a separate backup before testing it and avoid replacing a known-good Stable setup until the new build has been verified.

Use only lawfully obtained software

Eden’s quick-start documentation lists dumped console firmware, extracted keys and games dumped from the user’s own console as prerequisites. Use only software you are legally entitled to use. This guide does not provide or link to ROMs, keys, firmware or piracy sources.
