Nintendo Switch Sports Resort brings another collection of toy-like sports and activities to Wuhu Island, including free-roaming outings and returning events. GameSpot writer Steve Watts found enjoyable moments in the eight activities he tried, but his short session could not answer the key question: is there enough depth here to make another visit last?

What the preview says about Switch Sports Resort
GameSpot presents Switch Sports Resort as the fifth entry in the Wii Sports line and a return to Wuhu Island, now for Switch 2. Watts’s hands-on preview covered eight sports and activities, but does not establish the complete final lineup.
The session suggested a collection balancing familiar competition with new ways to move around the island. Some activities made a stronger first impression than others, but the preview did not establish how much skill or replay value the full game will offer.

Three new activities make Wuhu Island explorable
Skateboarding, Prop Plane, and Power Cruising are free-roaming activities with time limits in the preview. They trade the straightforward match structure of traditional sports for movement and exploration using unusual Joy-Con controls.
| Activity | What Watts tried | What stood out |
|---|---|---|
| Skateboarding | Side-on Joy-Con mouse movement across a surface, combined with motion controls for steering and tricks. | A hybrid control scheme; the preview does not establish how it holds up over extended play. |
| Power Cruising | Horizontally held Joy-Cons work like handlebars; twisting and tilting control throttle and steering. | A motion-driven jet-ski outing, rather than a conventional head-to-head sport. |
| Prop Plane | The player holds a Joy-Con like a toy airplane and explores the island. | Watts found it the most satisfying of the three, including an obstacle course through a volcano. |
Watts reports that a Nintendo representative said Skateboarding and Power Cruising would have free-roam modes without timers or collectibles, while Prop Plane would not. That is attributed preview information, not confirmation of the final specification.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Returning sports mix familiarity with a few promising wrinkles
The preview covered Boxing and Archery from Wii Sports Resort, along with Table Tennis and Bowling from Wii Sports. These familiar events provide a contrast to the new exploration activities, though the limited session offers only snapshots rather than a broad assessment of their depth.
Boxing
In one match against the easiest opponent, Watts found Boxing easy to exploit. A single brief match is not enough to judge its challenge across opponents or its longer-term skill ceiling.
Rank #3
- The ultimate game that brings together 30 different sports
- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
- Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
Archery
Archery’s competitive scoring structure impressed Watts. The preview identifies it as a standout for structured competition, but does not show how its challenge develops over time.
Table Tennis and Bowling
Both return from Wii Sports. Their inclusion reinforces the familiar side of the collection; Watts’s preview does not provide enough detail to assess changes or lasting appeal.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.
Thumb Wrestling shows a more tactical side
Thumb Wrestling was surprisingly tactical in Watts’s session. Charging a stronger thumb leaves a player open to being pinned, creating a clear risk-reward choice rather than a simple contest of strength. It was one of the preview’s more intriguing mechanics, though the short session could not establish how much strategic depth it supports.
Does the collection have enough depth to last?
The preview’s strongest evidence is about first impressions: the new movement controls, the appeal of exploring Wuhu Island, Archery’s scoring, and Thumb Wrestling’s trade-off between power and vulnerability. It does not answer how much mileage the activities have collectively. Watts explicitly leaves unresolved whether the game has enough depth to sustain another trip to Wuhu Island, or whether it is a vacation players can safely skip.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

That uncertainty matters for a collection built from short activities. A fun first match or flight does not by itself show whether the sports remain rewarding after repeated play. The available session was too limited to support a finished-game verdict or a confident buy-or-skip recommendation.
What is still unconfirmed
This preview identifies Switch Sports Resort as a Switch 2 game, but it does not establish a final release date, price, complete activity lineup, or multiplayer and platform requirements. Those details should be checked against Nintendo’s final listing before making a purchase decision.
