That boundary usually tells you where to troubleshoot. A black screen alone does not prove YouTube is at fault, and it is not enough reason to replace equipment.
Trace the picture through the signal path
Check the same live output at each stage, in order. Switchboard’s Confidence Monitor is an incoming preview: it shows the video Switchboard is receiving from the encoder, not necessarily what YouTube is delivering to viewers.
- Encoder: Look at the encoder’s source or scene preview. If available, inspect a local recording too. If the preview and recording are already black, investigate the source and encoder before Switchboard.
- Switchboard: Open the correct Encoder Workflow and inspect its Confidence Monitor and status. Switchboard distinguishes states including “No Video Present,” “Video Present,” and “Live Streaming.” An inactive monitor or a status indicating it is not receiving video means Switchboard cannot pass that video to destinations.
- YouTube: Check the event’s Live Control Room health indicator, then the public stream page. YouTube attaches timestamps to errors; red errors are critical and can prevent the event or cause viewer problems, while yellow errors can degrade quality.
Record the last point where the picture is good and note whether the symptom is no picture at all or a black picture with audio. That distinction is useful when reporting the issue, but the available official guidance does not establish black-with-audio as a specific cause.
If the encoder preview is black
Treat this as a source or encoder-path problem unless further evidence points elsewhere. YouTube recommends checking source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local archive; if the stream looks healthy locally, test the outbound internet connection.

- Confirm the intended camera, capture input, scene, or other video source is selected and routed.
- Look for encoder errors and signs of high CPU load. Check a local recording if one is available.
- Update the encoder software. If the source and archive checks do not explain the problem, YouTube recommends trying a different encoder.
- If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy but the stream still has viewer problems, test the outbound connection. Contact your ISP if a connection test points to a fault.
There is no single verified menu path for every camera, capture card, OBS scene, GPU, or hardware encoder. Use the instructions for your specific device and version rather than changing unrelated settings or buying replacement hardware based only on a black screen.
If Switchboard is not receiving video
Switchboard’s support guidance frames this state as the Confidence Monitor “Not Receiving Video” from the encoder. Work through the encoder-to-Switchboard connection before changing YouTube settings.

- Make sure the encoder is sending. Confirm it is running and actively streaming to Switchboard. Some encoders require a separate Go Live action.
- Compare the connection details. In the correct Switchboard Encoder Workflow, check the Stream Server/URL and Stream Key against the corresponding fields in the encoder. Correct any mismatch.
- Update the encoder. Switchboard recommends using a current encoder version.
- Check upload connectivity. Test the connection and upload capacity if needed. Insufficient or unstable upload can interrupt delivery to Switchboard.
- Run the setup test. Send video into the workflow and confirm that the Confidence Monitor displays it and the status changes from “Not Receiving” to “Receiving.” This confirms the encoder-to-Switchboard feed; it does not, by itself, start destinations.
For this encoder connection, Switchboard’s setup guide recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and 30 or 60 FPS. Copy the workflow’s URL and key carefully and verify those values. These are Switchboard setup recommendations; if YouTube later reports a specific error, follow that destination’s warning rather than treating these settings as a universal fix.
If Switchboard has video but YouTube is black or unhealthy
Open YouTube Live Control Room and use the actual health warning to choose what to change. YouTube’s guidance lists several possible ingestion or delivery problems; correct the flagged setting rather than changing every encoder value at once.

- Format or codec: YouTube’s cited guidance calls for H.264 video and AAC audio. Its messages can flag an unsupported audio format or an incorrect video codec/profile.
- Bitrate or ingestion configuration: YouTube may require an exact bitrate for the selected ingestion configuration. If your connection cannot support the selected resolution, lower the resolution.
- Video tracks: The stream must contain one video stream. YouTube can flag a missing video stream, multiple video streams, or unsupported interlaced video.
- Frame rate and keyframes: YouTube may flag excessive frame rate or improper keyframe frequency. Its guidance calls for keyframes every two seconds and advises adjusting keyframe cadence with frame rate.
After changing the setting named in the warning, check the health status again and verify the image at the viewer endpoint. YouTube also recommends checking the encoder preview and outbound connection when the dashboard reports viewer problems.
If the encoder and dashboards look healthy
Ask whether the failure affects every viewer or only one person, device, or network. A viewer-local problem is a different branch from a broadcast-wide failure. If viewers on different networks report trouble, YouTube advises checking the encoder and outbound internet; contact the ISP if a connection test reveals a fault.

If Switchboard still receives no video after you have checked the encoder, URL/key, and upload connection, use Switchboard’s help or ticket route. If YouTube continues to report errors after you correct the flagged settings, use YouTube’s reporting or support route. Include the affected stage, relevant status or error text, and its timestamp.

A black picture is a signal-path symptom, not evidence by itself of a copyright or reused-content issue. If the video or audio is blocked, restricted, or otherwise affected, check YouTube’s event notices and the rights for every asset you use. Do not assume that permission to use a track or clip in an ordinary video also covers a live stream. Review YouTube’s current policies and notices for the channel and content involved.
