Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream is a multiplayer-focused action RPG with an offline Story Mode for solo play. Its strongest case is the combination of large co-op raids, character switching and a broad roster of familiar characters. Its clearest limitation for solo players is that the game’s headline raid structure is built around online play, with raid access unlocked through story and rank progression.
There is no verified multi-outlet critic consensus to cite here. The assessment below separates the game’s documented features from the player-review snapshot and an individual outlet’s impressions.
What kind of game is Fractured Daydream?
Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream is an action RPG that puts online co-op and large-scale raids at the center of its design, while still offering a story campaign that can be played offline. Bandai Namco’s premise has a system malfunction bring together worlds and timelines from across the Sword Art Online universe, creating a crossover story with characters from different arcs.
The official feature overview describes 21 playable characters at launch, organized into six classes: Fighter, Tank, Rogue, Mage, Ranger and Support. Combat also lets players swap between party members, giving the roster a mechanical role beyond simply collecting familiar faces. These are publisher-stated features, not a measure of how well each character plays in practice.
#1 Best Overall
- Team up with up to 20 players around the world (cross gen support)
- Original Storyline and All-Star Roster
- Take down menacing monsters alongside your favorite heroes and villains
- Developed for new and previous Sword Art Online fans
- For SAO fans, this is a dream come true experience to commemorate the IP's 10th Anniversary
Bandai Namco lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and Steam/PC. Steam lists an October 3, 2024 release date, while Bandai Namco’s launch announcement gave October 4 as the worldwide release date; the dates reflect different platform or regional timing rather than one universal storefront date.
Is Fractured Daydream mostly multiplayer?
Yes: multiplayer is the game’s defining focus, especially in its raid structure, but it is not online-only. The Bandai Namco Europe FAQ says Story Mode can be played offline, and Steam lists both single-player and online co-op. A player can therefore experience the story alone without a connection, though that does not make the game’s large co-op encounters a solo substitute.

- Time and space, displaced - Galaxia, a new system allowing players to relive the past, has been added to ALfheim Online; however, Galaxia spins out of control causing players from all over time and space to be displaced! To set the timeline back on track, Kirito must work with fallen friends...and foes.
- Choose your character and join the fight - Each with their own specific role on the battlefield, SAO characters from various arcs are gathered to fight. Team up with a total of 20 players from around the world in 1 of 5 parties comprised of 4 players each for multiplayer co-op action!
- Defeat high difficulty bosses in Raids - True to the SWORD ART ONLINE series, join a raid party and prepare for a fight with high difficulty bosses together! How you prepare for the fight is the key to victory!
Bandai Namco describes raids for up to 20 players, with cross-play supported across the listed platforms. The Europe FAQ also says fixed parties of two to four players can be formed across platforms. The larger raid scale is the game’s distinctive multiplayer pitch; the smaller party option is more relevant if you want to play with a regular group.
How do raids and progression work?
Online content is not all available immediately. In the official FAQ’s example, the Skull Reaper Boss Raid requires players to complete Chapters 1 and 2, clear Woods of Recollection and Abandoned Facility, and reach Player Rank 15. That gives the online mode a progression ramp, but means players looking to jump straight into that raid need to work through the listed milestones first.

Meristation’s Spanish-language review, published December 2, 2024, describes three online variants: co-op quest, boss raid and free mission. It found online play entertaining, while noting that some large encounters could become visually chaotic. That is one outlet’s assessment, not a universal verdict. Meristation also mentions a challenge tower after campaign completion.
What do reviews and player ratings say?
Steam’s English-language user reviews were labeled “Mostly Positive” at the time of access on October 8, 2026: 71% of 782 reviews were positive. This is a dated snapshot of Steam user sentiment, not a professional critic score; the rating and review count can change.
No broad professional critic aggregate or multi-outlet consensus is established in the cited sources. The available evidence supports a clear description of the game’s modes and features, but not a definitive judgment about combat feel, performance, matchmaking, mission variety, progression pacing or how enjoyable it is with a quiet player base.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Fractured Daydream have crossplay or cross-save?
Cross-play is supported across the listed platforms, so players on different systems can join raids and form fixed parties together. Cross-save is not supported: progress does not transfer between platform versions, according to Bandai Namco’s FAQ. If you play on more than one system, choose the one where you expect to keep your main save.

Is the solo story enough reason to buy it?
The offline Story Mode makes Fractured Daydream a possible choice for someone who wants to play alone, but it does not change the game’s co-op-first identity. Solo-focused buyers should weigh their interest in the crossover campaign and character roster against the fact that the most prominent raid content is online. Players who want regular group action have a stronger fit, particularly if their friends play on different platforms.
The base game is the entry point; additional character and story content is optional. Bandai Namco’s official page lists Character Pass Vol. 2, including Moonlit Night Fragment and Worlds Beyond 4, alongside additional characters, scenarios, costumes, weapons, stamps and player-card backgrounds. The publisher says the base game is required and warns that some contents may also be sold individually. Store availability and bundle contents can vary by platform, so check the local store and avoid paying twice for add-ons you already own.
