You can find the sword in a locked tower room inside Caria Manor, in the northwest part of Liurnia of the Lakes. The chest is not reached through a normal ground-level entrance. You must approach the room from the manor’s elevated walkways and drop onto the roof above it.

How to reach the chest
- Start at the Manor Lower Level Site of Grace in Caria Manor.
- Follow the elevated stone walkways through the manor. You will pass the area’s hostile puppet enemies and several branching platforms.
- Continue until the route opens toward the surrounding rooftops. Look down for a roof positioned below the walkway rather than searching for a door at ground level.
- Drop onto that roof, then locate the ladder leading down into the locked tower room.
- Climb down and open the chest inside. It contains the Sword of Night and Flame.
The important navigation clue is vertical: if you are trying doors on the lower level, you are looking in the wrong place. Follow the manor’s upper paths, identify the roof below, and descend into the tower room from above.
Because Caria Manor is in the base game, the sword is obtainable without entering Shadow of the Erdtree. It also counts toward the Legendary Armaments achievement or trophy, which requires collecting all of the game’s legendary armaments.

Press the strong-attack follow-up to release a broad burst of flames forward. The fire sweep is useful when enemies are grouped in front of you or when fire is a better damage choice for the target. Its forward coverage also gives the weapon a way to pressure several nearby enemies without relying only on ordinary sword swings.

The stance itself can be held, but the two follow-up attacks are not chargeable. Plan your FP supply accordingly: a character that rarely invests in Mind or carries limited blue-flask charges will get less practical value from the weapon’s defining feature.

The clearest home for the sword is a hybrid Intelligence/Faith build that can meet both 24-point requirements and still has enough FP to use Night-and-Flame Stance regularly. Its listed scaling is better aligned with Intelligence and Faith than with Strength or Dexterity, while the weapon’s attack profile includes physical, magic, and fire damage.
Why the dual-stat requirement matters
Meeting 24 Intelligence and 24 Faith is a meaningful investment. A pure Intelligence character, pure Faith character, or conventional Strength or Dexterity build does not naturally reach the weapon’s requirements without diverting levels from its main priorities. That opportunity cost is the main reason the sword is a specialized choice even though it can be found comparatively early in Liurnia.

In other words, early availability does not mean early usefulness. You can reach Caria Manor and obtain the sword before the later portions of the game, but a new character may not yet have the attributes, FP, or upgrade investment needed to make it perform as intended.
Magic and fire are separate considerations
The two stance attacks do not simply represent two animations for the same damage type. Night Comet deals magic damage, while the flame sweep deals fire damage. Different enemies can respond very differently to those damage types, and equipment or buffs that improve one channel may not improve the other in the same way.
That makes the sword adaptable, but it also makes simplistic damage comparisons unreliable. Whether the magic or fire follow-up is better depends on your attributes, supporting equipment, buffs, target defenses, and the patch version being used. A claim that one attack is always superior needs a defined build, enemy, and testing method.
Is the Sword of Night and Flame still good?
It remains appealing for the right character, particularly because no other weapon duplicates its exact two-mode stance. The sword can switch between a ranged magic attack and a forward fire attack without changing weapons, which is valuable for players who enjoy adapting to enemy positioning and resistances.
It should not be judged by launch-era videos alone. Bandai Namco’s official version 1.03 patch notes explicitly state that the damage of the Sword of Night and Flame’s weapon skill was decreased. Older guides may therefore present damage or conclusions that do not represent the post-nerf weapon.
