The 60-second answer
sync20.dll is the Network HotSync Module, a legacy component of Network HotSync Manager from Palm Computing, Inc. Palm Desktop, HotSync Manager, PalmOne-era desktop packages, and third-party Palm conduits may depend on it.

The safest repair is:
- Identify the program showing the error.
- Back up your Palm databases.
- Repair or reinstall the matching Palm Desktop/HotSync package.
- Check whether Windows Security quarantined a legitimate file.
- Avoid downloading a DLL from a random website.
- Do not copy the file to
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not use
regsvr32unless the DLL documentation specifically says it is a self-registering component.
The correct replacement must come from the same Palm or conduit installation that originally supplied the application. Historical records show multiple sync20.dll versions, so a file with the right name is not necessarily the right file.

The file is associated with the Network HotSync® Module and the Network HotSync® Manager. It belongs to Palm’s application software, not to Windows.

The exact path depends on the Palm Desktop generation, Windows architecture, installation choices, and any third-party conduit involved.
A Palm-related program may fail with messages including:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- “This application has failed to start because SYNC20.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”
- “The program can’t start because sync20.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading sync20.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: sync20.dll.”
A missing sync20.dll may not be the only problem. Related Palm files, including HotSync logging, table, and conduit modules, may also be missing or incompatible. Windows can sometimes report a dependency problem as if the named DLL itself were absent.
Which program installed it?
Look at the title bar, shortcut, or executable named in the error. Likely sources include:
- Palm Desktop
- HotSync Manager
- PalmOne desktop software
- Network HotSync components
- Palm backup or synchronization utilities
- Java conduits
- E-book, organizer, or other Palm applications that use HotSync
Sunrise XP is one documented example of a Palm-related application that has reported missing HotSync files. That does not mean every sync20.dll error comes from Sunrise XP. The calling program is more useful than the DLL filename alone.
Why did the error begin?
The timing usually identifies the cause.
| When the error started | Likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| Immediately after installing Palm software | Incomplete installation | Run the installer repair option |
| After upgrading HotSync | Version mismatch | Reinstall the matching Palm package |
| After installing a conduit | Conduit expects another HotSync build | Repair or reinstall the conduit and HotSync together |
| After antivirus activity | File was quarantined or deleted | Check Windows Security Protection history |
| After moving the Palm folder | Registry or path references are broken | Reinstall to the original or intended path |
| After cleaning old files | Required Palm modules were deleted | Restore the complete installation |
| After a Windows or driver change | Separate system or USB issue | Check drivers and use system repair only if other programs also fail |
Fix 1: Repair Palm Desktop or HotSync
This is the safest first repair because it restores the DLL together with its related files, registry entries, paths, and dependencies.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Try repair from Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Palm Desktop, PalmOne, or HotSync.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the Palm application again.
The repair option depends on how the old software was packaged. If Windows does not show it, use the installer or Control Panel method below.
Try repair from Control Panel
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select Palm Desktop or the relevant HotSync entry.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, if offered.
- Complete the installer.
- Restart the computer.
- Test Palm Desktop or the program that produced the error.
How to tell whether it worked
The repair worked if the affected program opens without the sync20.dll message and HotSync components load normally. If the same error appears, or another Palm DLL is immediately reported as missing, the installation is probably incomplete or mismatched. Continue with a clean reinstall rather than copying only sync20.dll.

Fix 2: Reinstall the complete matching package
A complete reinstall is more reliable than replacing one file. It restores the application version that belongs with the DLL and avoids mixing modules from different HotSync generations.
Protect Palm data first
Before uninstalling anything, back up your Palm data folders. Look for folders associated with your Palm user name, Palm Desktop, or the selected synchronization profile. Copy them to another drive or a removable device.
Do not assume that uninstalling Palm Desktop will preserve every database. The safest approach is to make a manual backup before changing the installation.
Reinstall Palm Desktop or HotSync
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Remove Palm Desktop, HotSync, or the related utility.
- If the program is not listed there, open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Programs and Features.
- Select the Palm software and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer from Palm media or the installation package supplied with the device or conduit.
- Install the complete package, including HotSync components.
- Restore or reconnect the Palm user profile only after the program starts successfully.
- Test the application before adding third-party conduits.
There is no currently verified Microsoft redistributable that supplies sync20.dll. No current official Palm download page should be assumed to provide a safe, universally compatible replacement. Use original installation media or a package obtained from the organization that supplied the Palm software, and verify that it matches the application and conduit version.
If the installer will not run
Try these steps:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode.
- Choose an older Windows version appropriate to the software.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Run the installer again.
Compatibility mode may help the installer start, but it does not make every Palm application fully compatible with modern Windows.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old application file. That does not prove the detection was a false positive. Restore a file only when you know it came from a legitimate Palm installation and the rest of the system is clean.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving Palm Desktop, HotSync, or
sync20.dll. - Open the entry and review the detected path and action.
- Run a Microsoft Defender scan before restoring anything.
- If the file is confirmed as part of your original Palm installation, choose Restore or the available restore action.
- Start Palm Desktop again.
Microsoft documents Protection history and restoration here: Windows Security Protection history.
Do not disable antivirus protection just to install an unknown DLL. If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file, reinstall the complete package from a trusted source and investigate the detection instead of forcing the file back.
Fix 4: Resolve a Palm Desktop or conduit version mismatch
A DLL with the same filename can belong to a different HotSync release. Historical Palm software reports include more than one sync20.dll version, and third-party conduits have required particular HotSync builds.

- Powerful, yet affordable, with 32 MB of memory (26 MB actual storage capacity)
- Create and edit Word, Excel, Adobe PDF, and PowerPoint compatible files
- Supports SD, SDIO and MultiMediaCard expansion-cards to add extra memory, features or content
This is especially likely when:
- Palm Desktop was upgraded without upgrading the conduit.
- A Java conduit installed its own HotSync-related files.
- Two Palm Desktop versions were installed on the same computer.
- The error began after replacing HotSync Manager.
- The application works only when started from the Palm installation directory.
Rebuild the version combination
- Write down the Palm Desktop version shown in Control Panel or the program’s About screen.
- Record the name and version of every installed conduit.
- Temporarily remove the conduit that was installed or updated most recently.
- Repair Palm Desktop and HotSync.
- Restart Windows.
- Test HotSync before reinstalling the conduit.
- Reinstall the conduit version documented for that Palm Desktop release.
- Test synchronization again.
Do not copy sync20.dll from one Palm installation into another. The DLL may rely on companion files, registry settings, or a specific HotSync build. Replacing only the named file can turn a missing-file error into an entry-point, loader, or synchronization failure.
Fix 5: Check the installation path
Older Palm software may expect files in a particular directory. Moving the folder manually can leave shortcuts, registry entries, and conduit settings pointing to the old location.
- Right-click the shortcut that produces the error.
- Select Properties.
- Review Target and Start in.
- Check whether the target points to an old
Palm, palmOne, or custom directory. - Open File Explorer and confirm whether that directory still exists.
- If the folder was moved, avoid manually copying files back and forth.
- Repair or reinstall the Palm package to establish the path again.
- Test the program from its installed shortcut.
If compatibility settings are required, apply them to the actual Palm executable rather than to sync20.dll.
Fix 6: Check 32-bit software on 64-bit Windows
sync20.dll is historically associated with legacy Win32 Palm software. A 64-bit Windows installation does not require, or benefit from, a 64-bit replacement DLL.
Important points:
- A 32-bit application normally uses its own 32-bit DLLs.
C:WindowsSystem32is not a general-purpose storage location for application DLLs.C:WindowsSysWOW64is also not a safe place for manually copied Palm files.- A 64-bit-labelled download may be incompatible with the Palm program.
- The correct architecture is supplied by the complete Palm or conduit installer.
If the program reports that the DLL is missing even though it is visible in the Palm folder, another dependency may be absent. Repair the full application rather than copying the file into a Windows directory.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Fix 7: Update or reinstall USB HotSync drivers only when detection is the problem
Driver work is relevant when Windows cannot detect the Palm device, USB synchronization fails, or Device Manager shows an error. It is not normally the primary repair for a missing sync20.dll.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Also check Portable Devices, Other devices, and any Palm-related category.
- Look for a warning icon or an unknown device.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test USB HotSync again.
If the device is listed incorrectly:
- Right-click the device in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Disconnect the Palm device.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the driver package supplied for your Palm hardware and Windows version.
- Reconnect the device and test synchronization.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale hardware drivers; its free scan shows what it detects, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the matching Palm package remains the definitive fix for sync20.dll.
Do not install a USB driver simply because sync20.dll is missing. Fix the application first unless Device Manager shows a separate hardware problem.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only if other software is failing
DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Palm DLL, so use them as secondary checks when other Windows programs also fail or system corruption is suspected.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
bat
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the Palm application.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of checking for broader Windows problems easier; its free scan shows detected issues, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling Palm Desktop is still the definitive fix when only this application reports sync20.dll.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore may help when the error began immediately after installing software, changing drivers, or removing Palm files.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Follow the wizard to start the restoration.
- Sign in to Windows and test Palm Desktop.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal documents. Microsoft’s instructions are available in its System Restore guidance.
Should you download sync20.dll separately?
No. Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong Palm version
- The wrong architecture
- A file with missing companion dependencies
- A DLL that causes a different loader error
- A replacement that breaks an otherwise working HotSync installation
The safe source is the original Palm Desktop, HotSync, device, or conduit installation package that matches the affected application. If the Palm software is no longer available and the application is no longer needed, uninstalling it is safer than trying to reconstruct it with an isolated DLL.
Does regsvr32 fix sync20.dll?
Normally, no.
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair command for application DLLs, and there is no verified evidence here that sync20.dll should be registered this way.
Avoid commands such as:
regsvr32 sync20.dll
unless the Palm package documentation specifically requires registration and provides the correct file path. If the command reports that the entry point is missing, that does not mean Windows needs another copy of the DLL. It means the DLL is not designed for that registration method.
Microsoft describes the command’s intended behavior in its regsvr32 documentation.
What to record if the error remains
If repair and reinstall do not resolve the problem, record:
- The exact error text
- The executable that displays it
- The full path of that executable
- The Palm Desktop or HotSync version
- The Windows edition and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether a conduit was recently installed
- Whether Windows Security quarantined a file
- The file version shown under
sync20.dll→ Properties → Details - Any other DLL named by the error
This information distinguishes a missing file from a missing dependency, wrong installation path, incompatible conduit, or architecture mismatch.

FAQ
Is sync20.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Palm Network HotSync software and should not normally be present in System32 or SysWOW64.
Can I copy sync20.dll into System32?
Do not do that. Palm applications should load their matching files from the Palm installation directory. System-folder copying can create version conflicts and does not repair the application.
Which program needs sync20.dll?
Palm Desktop, HotSync Manager, PalmOne-era packages, and some third-party Palm conduits or utilities may need it. Check the executable named in the error rather than guessing from the DLL filename.
Is there one universally correct version?
No. Historical records identify multiple versions, and those records are not sufficient to establish one universal replacement. Use the version supplied with the matching Palm or conduit package.
Will Windows Update or Visual C++ Redistributables fix it?
They are not established default fixes for this Palm DLL. Start with Palm Desktop or HotSync repair and reinstall.
What if I no longer use Palm software?
Uninstall Palm Desktop, HotSync, and unused conduits. If another application still reports the file afterward, identify that application before deleting remaining Palm folders.
Can modern Windows run Palm software?
Some legacy Palm programs may run with compatibility adjustments, but support varies. A 64-bit Windows installation does not make a 64-bit replacement appropriate. Use the complete legacy package and address USB driver compatibility separately.
What if reinstalling Palm Desktop produces another missing DLL?
That usually indicates an incomplete or mismatched installation, a missing dependency, or a conduit conflict. Do not download each reported DLL separately. Reinstall the matching package and its related components together.
