System Shock (2023) is a strong fit if you want a tense, old-school sci-fi immersive sim with refreshed visuals and controls—but not if you expect modern objective markers or a streamlined route through its levels. Reviews broadly praised Nightdive Studios’ faithful remake, while maze-like navigation and backtracking remain meaningful caveats.

What is System Shock (2023)?

Released on May 30, 2023, System Shock is Nightdive Studios’ remake of the 1994 game. The Steam listing describes updated HD visuals, controls, interface, sound, and music, while retaining the original’s core identity as a single-player science-fiction adventure. Steam’s product page also notes the return of SHODAN’s original voice actor.

The remake’s central trade-off is clear: it modernizes presentation and some interactions without rebuilding the experience around contemporary conveniences. It is still a game of close observation, exploration, and figuring out where to go in a complicated environment.

What did reviews say about the remake?

PC Gamer’s 2023 review gave the game 80 and called it “a smart, faithful remake,” while noting that its conservative approach leaves many of the original’s strengths and weaknesses intact. The review praised SHODAN’s renewed presence, the updated interface, and Citadel Station’s atmosphere, but found the station’s vertical layout, repeated elevator trips, and backtracking could become laborious. #1 Best Overall
System Shock - PlayStation 5
  • Face off against the forces of a rogue AI gone mad
  • Improve your skills and adapt to take on your foes
  • Discover a non-linear story unfolding at your own pace
  • Jack into cyberspace to hack the system and open alternative routes
  • Innovative art style combines retro future design with modern technology

That positive response is not the same as saying every old design choice works for every player. PC Gamer’s staff later named System Shock its favorite remake of 2023, praising its fidelity, exploration, gunplay, and modernization of controls and systems. The staff comments also captured the key disagreement: one writer wanted a larger creative departure, while another enjoyed the navigation challenge. PC Gamer’s 2023 favorite-remake feature.

How positive are player reviews?

Steam showed “Very Positive” English-language reviews, with 90% positive from 7,815 reviews, when accessed on October 8, 2026. Its recent reviews were 86% positive from 81 reviews at that time. These are live platform figures, not critic scores or independently audited survey results; Steam’s percentages and review counts can change. Check the current Steam review snapshot.

Does the navigation make it frustrating?

Citadel Station is a layered maze rather than a sequence of clearly signposted missions. PC Gamer noted the absence of an objective screen and mission markers, as well as the need to revisit areas and use elevators repeatedly. Players who enjoy mapping a space mentally, noticing environmental clues, and making their own route may find this part of the appeal. Players who want a clear next objective and minimal backtracking may find it a persistent annoyance.

This is a taste question, not simply a matter of whether the remake is “faithful.” The same friction can feel like satisfying old-school exploration to one player and unnecessary inconvenience to another. Consider how much guidance you want before choosing the game.

Is cyberspace a problem?

Cyberspace is a distinct gameplay mode, and its difficulty has been a specific point of frustration for at least one reported player. In April 2025, PC Gamer reported that immersive-sim developer Raphael Colantonio got stuck in cyberspace and stopped playing there, despite finding the rest of the game “really cool.” That is one informed player’s reaction, not evidence of a broad consensus, but it is a useful warning if difficult shifts in gameplay are a deal-breaker for you. Read PC Gamer’s report on Colantonio’s reaction.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

  • Good fit: You want a faithful remake of a foundational sci-fi game, enjoy exploring interconnected spaces, and are comfortable working out your own route.
  • Proceed with caution: You like immersive sims but have limited patience for repeated traversal, sparse direction, or a separate mode that may test your patience.
  • Probably not a fit: You rely on mission markers, want a briskly guided campaign, or expect a remake to substantially replace older design conventions rather than refresh them.

For the PC version it reviewed in 2023, PC Gamer recommended keyboard and mouse because navigating menus with a controller felt cumbersome. That advice reflects its review experience at the time; it is not a verified assessment of every later platform version or current compatibility status.

Should you play System Shock (2023)?

Play it if its particular balance sounds appealing: a remade presentation wrapped around demanding exploration and much of the original’s design. The positive reception is well supported, but the most important decision is whether you want to navigate Citadel Station on the game’s terms. If you do, its fidelity is a strength. If you need frequent direction and low-friction traversal, that same fidelity may be the reason to pass.
