Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
systemdetection.dll is a real Ubisoft game component, not a Windows system DLL. If systemdetection.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the Ubisoft game that owns the file rather than copying a replacement into a Windows folder.

Recommended Free Tools
- The message says “missing,” “not found,” or “Cannot find systemdetection.dll”: verify the game files, then reinstall the game if verification fails.
- The file disappeared after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection History and restore it only if the installation is trusted and the detection is a false positive.
- The file exists, but the game closes, shows “Bad Image,” or names
systemdetection.dllas the faulting module: treat it as an old-game compatibility problem. Rename the game-local DLL as a reversible test. - The error names
d3dx9_*.dll,XInput1_3.dll, orXAudio2_7.dll: install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX components. That is a separate dependency problem. - The error names
vcruntime*.dllormsvcp*.dll: repair the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. - The game fails after a graphics-driver or overlay change: disable the overlay and reinstall or roll back the graphics driver.
- The path points to
C:WindowsSystem32or another unrelated application: stop and identify the owning program before replacing anything.
What systemdetection.dll belongs to
The file’s embedded metadata identifies it as System Detection DLL, published by Ubisoft Entertainment, with the comment “System Detection DLL Powered by Gear.” The name suggests system or hardware detection, but Ubisoft does not publicly document every internal check performed by the module.

- Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction
- Splinter Cell Blacklist
- Assassin’s Creed Revelations
- I Am Alive
- Some Far Cry-related installations
This is not a complete product list. The path in your error is more useful than the filename alone. Common locations include:
<Game folder>srcSYSTEMsystemdetection.dll
<Game folder>binsystemdetection.dll
Public records show both a 32-bit systemdetection.dll and a separate 64-bit systemdetection64.dll. Observed 32-bit releases include version 1.0.0.8 and version 1.0.0.10, with different file sizes between packaged builds. Do not assume that a DLL from another release is interchangeable.
Check the full path and exact message
Before changing files, capture the complete error.
- Press Ctrl+C while the error dialog is open, then paste the text into Notepad.
- Record the game title and storefront.
- Note whether the path is inside the game directory.
- Check whether the message says:
systemdetection.dll is missingsystemdetection.dll was not foundCannot find systemdetection.dllsystemdetection.dll could not be loadedBad Image- Open Event Viewer by pressing Win+R, entering
eventvwr.msc, and pressing Enter. - Go to Windows Logs → Application and inspect the error at the time of the crash.
- Look for Faulting module name. If it names
systemdetection.dll, the file may be present but incompatible. If it names another DLL, repair that dependency instead.
A missing-file dialog and a crash naming the DLL are not the same problem. The first usually needs game-file restoration. The second may need a compatibility workaround.
Fix 1: Verify the game files
This is the safest first repair because it restores the exact file supplied with your game release.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the scan.
- Start the game from Steam.
If Steam reports that files were reacquired, test the game again. If the same error returns, close Steam and restart Windows before testing once more.

Verification may restore a DLL that you deliberately renamed for compatibility. If the game previously launched only after renaming the file, apply that workaround again after verification.

- Open Ubisoft Connect.
- Select Games.
- Choose the affected title.
- Open Properties.
- Select Verify files.
- Allow the repair to finish.
- Launch the game from Ubisoft Connect.
If you own the game through Steam but it also uses Ubisoft Connect, verify it in Steam first. Then repeat the check in Ubisoft Connect if the Ubisoft launcher still reports damaged files.
Fix 2: Reinstall the owning game
Reinstall when verification cannot restore the file, repeatedly removes it, or reports that the installation cannot be repaired.
- Back up saved games if the title stores them outside cloud synchronization.
- Uninstall the game from Steam, Ubisoft Connect, or Windows Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the game again from its original storefront or physical installation media.
- Run the game before adding mods, overlays, or custom DLL files.
- Verify the installation again if the launcher provides that option.
Do not download systemdetection.dll from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, may be the wrong architecture or packaged version, and often does not fix the damaged installation that caused the error. The safe sources are the game’s original Steam, Ubisoft Connect, or physical-media installer.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a game file after an update or a scan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Expand recent detections and look for an entry involving the game folder or
systemdetection.dll. - Do not restore the file automatically. Confirm that the game came from a trusted installer and that the detection is a false positive.
- If it is confirmed safe, use the available Restore action.
- Return to Steam or Ubisoft Connect and verify the game files.
- Start the game again.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat is unsafe. If the file is quarantined again, do not keep downloading replacements. Leave the file removed and contact the game vendor or security-software vendor with the detection details.

Fix 4: Test the old-game compatibility workaround
Some older Ubisoft games crash because their system-detection code does not behave correctly with modern Windows or hardware. This is different from a genuinely missing file.
Use this test only when:
- The DLL already exists beside the game executable.
- Event Viewer names
systemdetection.dllas the faulting module. - The game began failing after a Windows, graphics-hardware, driver, or overlay change.
-
You are working with a documented older Ubisoft title such as Splinter Cell Conviction or Splinter Cell Blacklist.
-
Exit the game.
- Exit Ubisoft Connect completely. Right-click its notification-area icon and choose Exit if available.
- Open the game’s installation folder.
- Locate the game-local
systemdetection.dll. - Right-click it and choose Rename.
- Rename it to:
systemdetection.dll.bak
- Start the game.
This preserves a backup and does not modify Windows. In Splinter Cell Conviction, the game may show the missing-file warning during startup even after the rename. Dismiss the warning and test whether the game reaches its menu.

If the game launches, the rename is a compatibility workaround, not a general repair. It may disable system validation, change graphics behavior, or fail on another title or release. If the game refuses to start, close it and rename the backup back to systemdetection.dll, then verify the files.
Verification can restore the original file. Apply the rename only after confirming that the restored copy causes the same compatibility crash.
Fix 5: Disable overlays before changing more files
Overlays can interfere with older games that perform hardware detection or use legacy rendering paths.

- Use these credits in-game to purchase the newest Operators, uniforms, weapon skins, charms, and more!
- R6 Credit code will be delivered via email from Amazon and redeemed in the Ubisoft Connect launcher
- Disable NVIDIA ShadowPlay or the NVIDIA in-game overlay in the NVIDIA app.
- Disable overlays in other recording, chat, or performance-monitoring software.
- Restart the game.
- If the problem disappears, re-enable overlays one at a time to identify the conflict.
For Assassin’s Creed Revelations, reports associate flickering and graphics problems with video-capture software, particularly ShadowPlay. That does not make every systemdetection.dll error an overlay problem, so test the overlay separately from the DLL rename.
Fix 6: Install the separate runtime named by the error
Do not install every runtime merely because a DLL is missing. Read the filename in the message.
Legacy DirectX files
If the error names d3dx9_*.dll, XInput1_3.dll, or XAudio2_7.dll:
- Download Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer,
dxwebsetup.exe, from the Microsoft Download Center. - Run the installer as administrator.
- Accept the license and allow it to install the legacy side-by-side components.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
This package supplies older components and does not replace the core DirectX version built into Windows.
Visual C++ files
If the message names vcruntime*.dll or msvcp*.dll:
- Download the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft Learn.
- For a 32-bit game, run
vc_redist.x86.exe. - Choose Repair if it is already installed, or complete the installation.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game again.
vc_redist.x64.exe is a separate package for 64-bit applications. Installing the x64 package does not replace the x86 package required by a 32-bit game.

Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated Windows applications report missing or corrupted system files. These commands normally will not recreate a missing Ubisoft game DLL.

- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the game.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run the two commands again. If only this Ubisoft game still reports systemdetection.dll, return to game verification or reinstall the game.
If you are tired of repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Ubisoft game remains the definitive fix for a missing game-local DLL.
You can also check Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install available updates, and restart.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 8: Reinstall or roll back the graphics driver
Use this branch when the crash began after a GPU-driver update, graphics-hardware change, or overlay installation.
- Press Win+X and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- If Roll Back Driver is available, use it when the problem started immediately after an update.
- Otherwise, download the current driver from your GPU manufacturer and install it.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game with overlays disabled.
Device Manager can identify the adapter, but the manufacturer’s installer is usually the correct place for a clean driver repair. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify the relevant package; the driver installation is completed by the full version. It is optional, and a game-file repair is still required when systemdetection.dll itself is absent.
Do not use these DLL fixes
- Do not copy
systemdetection.dllintoC:WindowsSystem32. - Do not copy it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not substitute
systemdetection64.dllfor the 32-bit file. - Do not mix builds from different games or releases.
- Do not run
regsvr32 systemdetection.dll. This private game module has no documented need for COM registration, andregsvr32applies to DLLs that provide registration entry points such asDllRegisterServer. - Do not use registry cleaners to solve a missing app-local file.
- Do not enable random Windows Features. To inspect them, open Settings → Apps → Optional features → More Windows features, or press Win+R, enter
optionalfeatures, and press Enter. There is no Windows feature that normally suppliessystemdetection.dll.
Last-resort recovery
If the failure began after a recent Windows, driver, or hardware change and game verification does not help:
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and complete System Restore.
System Restore cannot fix a game-specific version mismatch if the restore point predates the game installation. Reinstall the game afterward if its files are missing.
Prevention and final checklist
Before making another change, confirm:
- The error path points to the Ubisoft game that needs repair.
- The exact message is recorded.
- The game was verified through its storefront.
- Windows Security Protection History was checked.
- The game-local DLL exists, when testing a compatibility crash.
- The game is using its matching 32-bit or 64-bit build.
- Separate DirectX or Visual C++ errors were handled separately.
- Overlays are disabled during testing.
- Event Viewer was checked for the faulting module.
- Any renamed DLL was restored before verification or reinstalling.
If the problem remains, record the game title, storefront, full path, Windows version, exact message, Event Viewer status code, faulting module, antivirus action, and overlay status. That information distinguishes a missing package from a corrupted runtime, a security quarantine, and an old-game compatibility failure.
