systeminfo.dll Missing: Trace the App and Repair It Safely

“The program can’t start because systeminfo.dll is missing from your computer.”
A systeminfo.dll error means an application cannot load the required systeminfo.dll file or one of its dependencies.

The safest repair is usually to identify the program showing the error and repair or reinstall that program. Do not begin by downloading a file with the same name and copying it into C:WindowsSystem32.

  • The message names a particular program or game: Repair or reinstall that exact program.
  • The error appeared after an update or failed installation: Run the application’s repair option, then reinstall it if repair fails.
  • Windows Security quarantined the file: Check Protection history and verify the file’s path, publisher, and origin before restoring anything.
  • The application starts but reports “The specified module could not be found”: The DLL may be present but a dependent DLL may be missing.
  • The error began after moving the program to another computer: Reinstall it from its original installer, launcher, or OEM recovery source.
  • Several Windows components are also failing: Install Windows updates, then use DISM and SFC.
  • The error followed a driver or system change: Roll back the relevant change or use System Restore.
  • You found systeminfo.dll in System32: Do not assume it is genuine. The filename alone does not establish ownership.

What systeminfo.dll belongs to

systeminfo.dll is not a standard Windows component in the normal System32 or SysWOW64 installation. It is also not the same thing as Microsoft’s built-in systeminfo.exe, a command-line utility that displays Windows and hardware configuration. Microsoft documents that command separately in its systeminfo command reference.

The filename is ambiguous because unrelated applications can use it.

Public file records associate one 32-bit SystemInfo library with Goutier SystemInfo, attributed to Goutier. Other records identify a separate 32-bit System Information Library associated with HP System Diagnostics. These should not be treated as the same binary, and the filename does not tell you which one your application needs.

No authoritative current Goutier download page or supported standalone download for the Goutier-associated file has been established. There is also no verified 64-bit Goutier or HP copy to use as a general replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is why the application that is failing matters more than the DLL filename. A 32-bit application needs the matching 32-bit library, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.

Step 1: Identify the application that owns the file

Start with the error dialog.

Check the program named in the message

Read the complete dialog and write down:

  • The application name
  • The executable name, if shown
  • Whether the message says the file is missing, cannot load, or has an entry-point problem
  • When the failure started

The timing often identifies the cause. Pay particular attention if the error followed:

  • An application update
  • An interrupted installation
  • Antivirus quarantine
  • Disk cleanup
  • Migration to another PC
  • A Windows upgrade
  • Removal of an OEM utility
  • Moving a game or application folder manually

If the dialog does not name the program, open Task Manager while launching the application:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. Select Processes.
  3. Start the affected application.
  4. Watch for the process that appears briefly or becomes unresponsive.
  5. Right-click it and choose Open file location, if available.

Do not assume that a program installed the DLL simply because its shortcut is on the desktop. The executable that raises the error is the useful lead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the application folder

In File Explorer, locate the folder containing the affected executable. Common locations include:

  • C:Program Files...
  • C:Program Files (x86)...
  • A game library folder
  • An OEM utility folder
  • A custom folder selected during installation

Look for systeminfo.dll beside the executable or in a nearby subfolder. A correct application-private DLL may be stored there rather than in a Windows folder.

Right-click the file, choose Properties, and inspect:

  1. General: Check the file location.
  2. Details: Check the description, product name, company, and file version when present.
  3. Digital Signatures: Check whether a signature exists and whether Windows reports it as valid.

A file in an application directory may be legitimate. A file in System32 is not automatically legitimate, and a file in a temporary or download directory deserves extra scrutiny.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the architecture

Check the application’s installation location and documentation where available. A program under Program Files (x86) is commonly 32-bit, although the folder alone is not absolute proof.

The known public records for both the Goutier-associated and HP-associated identities describe 32-bit files. Do not insert a 64-bit replacement into a 32-bit application, or copy a 32-bit file into a different program simply because the names match.

Fix 1: Repair the affected application

Repair is the safest first action because it restores the files expected by that application and preserves its configuration when the installer supports it.

Windows 11 installed-app repair

  1. Open Start.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find the application showing the error.
  6. Select the three-dot button beside it.
  7. Choose Advanced options.
  8. Select Repair, if available.
  9. Wait for Windows to finish.
  10. Start the application again.

If the program opens normally, the missing or damaged private file was likely restored.

Some desktop programs do not expose Advanced options or Repair in Settings. In that case, use the program’s own installer or the classic Control Panel path.

Classic desktop program repair

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the affected program.
  5. Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows if requested.
  8. Test the application.

If the installer asks whether to repair or remove the program, choose repair. Do not delete the application folder first, because that can remove configuration or uninstall information needed by the repair process.

Repair a game

Use the game launcher’s Verify, Repair, or equivalent file-checking option. The exact menu differs between launchers, so use the launcher’s current interface rather than copying a DLL from another game installation.

After verification, launch the game from its normal shortcut or launcher. If the error remains, reinstall the game from the same official launcher or installer and confirm that the installation completes without interruption.

Fix 2: Reinstall the owning program

If repair is unavailable or does not restore the application, reinstall it.

  1. Back up the application’s settings or saved files if they are stored outside the normal cloud or game-save location.
  2. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  3. Select the affected application.
  4. Choose the three-dot button.
  5. Select Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Download or run the installer supplied by the application’s publisher, game launcher, OEM recovery media, or a verified backup.
  8. Install the same application again.
  9. Start it before adding unofficial modifications or copied files.

For a classic program:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Select the program.
  5. Choose Uninstall or Change.
  6. Complete removal.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Run the official installer again.

If the original installer includes prerequisites, allow it to install the versions it specifically requests. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because a DLL error appeared. Those components may be relevant to a particular application, but the filename alone does not prove which dependency is missing.

If reinstalling the application restores systeminfo.dll but Windows Security immediately removes it again, stop and investigate the detection instead of repeatedly restoring the file.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software may quarantine a legitimate application file, or malware may be impersonating a familiar filename.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open the app.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Choose Protection history.
  6. Find the event involving the affected application or systeminfo.dll.
  7. Expand the event and review the file path, detection name, and action.

Only consider restoring a file when you can verify all of the following:

  • It came from the application’s legitimate installer or a known-good backup.
  • Its path belongs to the expected application.
  • Its publisher and digital signature are appropriate.
  • The application vendor confirms the file is required.
  • A current security scan does not identify it as malicious.

Microsoft warns that restoring a genuine threat can expose the device. If the file was downloaded separately, appeared in a temporary folder, or has no credible application relationship, leave it quarantined and reinstall the parent program from its official source.

After a verified restore, update the application and run a full Windows Security scan. If the same file is quarantined again, do not keep adding exclusions. The application may be damaged, outdated, or compromised.

Fix 4: Resolve a missing dependency

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that systeminfo.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load another library that it requires.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is especially likely when:

  • systeminfo.dll is visibly present beside the executable.
  • The error appeared after copying only part of an application.
  • A runtime or prerequisite installation was interrupted.
  • The application was moved from another PC.
  • The message changes between launches.

The practical fix is still the application’s official repair or reinstall process. Its installer knows which dependent files belong with that build.

Do not guess by downloading individual runtime DLLs. If the application explicitly requires a Microsoft runtime, install it from Microsoft’s documentation or from the application’s official installer. Microsoft’s Visual C++ guidance applies to applications built with the relevant Microsoft compiler toolsets, not automatically to every systeminfo.dll error.

When the application vendor provides a repair log or prerequisite installer, use that instead of replacing files manually.

Fix 5: Install Windows updates

Windows Update is useful when the failure is part of broader operating-system instability, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling a third-party application DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Test the affected application.

If only one third-party application fails and other programs work normally, return to repairing that application rather than repeatedly checking Windows Update.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

Use these commands when Windows itself shows signs of corruption, such as multiple built-in tools failing, damaged system components, or update problems. They normally do not restore a third-party systeminfo.dll belonging to Goutier, HP, a game, or another application.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to complete.
  3. Restart Windows.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. Microsoft documents this process in its DISM repair guidance.

Run System File Checker

After DISM completes:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
  2. Enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Test the affected application.

SFC checks protected Windows system files. Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions explain how to interpret its result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running SFC repeatedly without identifying what changed rarely repairs a private application DLL. If Windows reports that it found no integrity violations, focus on the parent application instead.

When the manual process of hunting through Windows repair results becomes time-consuming, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; repairing them is handled by the full version, and it is not required for this fix or a replacement for reinstalling the application that owns systeminfo.dll.

Fix 7: Check a driver or recent system change

A driver is not the default explanation for a systeminfo.dll error. Consider this path only when the error began immediately after installing, removing, or updating a device driver or OEM utility.

Roll back a recent driver

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the recent change, such as Display adapters, System devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Test the application.

If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, obtain the correct driver from the computer or device manufacturer and install it using the vendor’s instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not remove unrelated devices because an application happens to mention systeminfo.dll. The DLL name is not evidence that a display, chipset, storage, or audio driver is responsible.

When identifying stale drivers manually means comparing hardware models and package versions one by one, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the driver issues it detects; installing updates is handled by the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when the DLL belongs to that program.

Fix 8: Use System Restore for a recent change

System Restore is appropriate when the failure clearly began after a recent installation, driver update, or system change.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Choose Next.
  3. Select a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that may be reverted.
  6. Select Close, then Next.
  7. Confirm the restore.
  8. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can revert applications, drivers, and system settings. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use regsvr32 unless the installer requires it

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. Most application runtime and helper DLLs are loaded directly by their programs and do not contain a self-registration entry point.

Blindly running this command:

regsvr32 systeminfo.dll

can produce an error such as “The module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found.” That does not repair a missing dependency or restore the correct application version.

There is a historical exception: Intel Express Installer documentation refers to SYSTEMINFO.DLL as a registered SystemInfo component. That does not mean every systeminfo.dll requires registration. Use registration only when the specific installer or vendor documentation explicitly requires it, and follow that installer’s repair procedure.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

Downloading systeminfo.dll from an unrelated DLL archive can fail in several ways:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The file may belong to a different product.
  • It may be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • It may be incompatible with the application’s version.
  • It may be modified or malicious.
  • It may be placed in the wrong directory.
  • It may hide the missing dependency that caused the error.
  • It can create conflicts when copied into System32.

The correct source is the affected application’s original installer, official publisher or game launcher, OEM recovery media, or a verified backup of that same installation. Manual copying is appropriate only when the original vendor explicitly specifies the file and destination.

If the error remains after reinstalling

Collect these details before trying more replacements:

  • The exact error text
  • The executable path
  • The path where systeminfo.dll is located
  • The file’s Properties → Details information
  • The Digital Signatures result
  • Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • The date and event that preceded the failure
  • Any Windows Security detection
  • Whether the same error occurs under another Windows user account

If the application works under another account, the original user profile may be damaged. If it fails for every account, investigate the installation, dependency chain, permissions, disk health, and compatibility with the current Windows version.

FAQ

Is systeminfo.dll a Windows file?

No authoritative evidence identifies it as a normal Windows System32 or SysWOW64 component. It is a third-party application DLL name. Do not confuse it with Microsoft’s systeminfo.exe command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is systeminfo.dll always part of Goutier SystemInfo?

No. Public records associate one 32-bit identity with Goutier SystemInfo, while other records associate a separate 32-bit System Information Library with HP System Diagnostics. The erroring application must be identified before choosing a repair.

Should I copy systeminfo.dll into System32?

Generally, no. The correct file may belong in the application’s own directory, and copying an unrelated DLL into System32 can cause version and security problems.

Is there a safe 64-bit version?

No verified 64-bit Goutier or HP version was established here. Treat architecture as an application-specific requirement and restore the copy supplied with that application.

Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file is present?

The named DLL may depend on another missing or incompatible DLL. Repair the parent application and its official prerequisites rather than replacing only the visible file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I register systeminfo.dll?

Only when the specific application installer requires registration. regsvr32 is not a universal fix, and most runtime DLLs do not support it.

Will DISM or SFC restore systeminfo.dll?

Normally, no. DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but a third-party application’s private DLL normally comes from that application’s installer.

What is the correct fix?

Identify the executable that reports the error, inspect the DLL’s path and signature, then repair or reinstall that exact application from a trusted original source.
