It is not the only credible choice, because realism changes with the question you are asking. Squad emphasizes communication and combined-arms scale; Ready or Not models SWAT procedure and bullet penetration through interiors; Insurgency: Sandstorm makes muzzle aim, suppression, stamina, sound and very short time to kill immediately consequential; Gray Zone Warfare offers an open-world extraction sandbox whose core systems are still changing in Early Access.
The comparison below separates those kinds of realism instead of pretending that one game reproduces every part of real firearms use equally well.

What “realistic gunplay” actually measures
A convincing tactical shooter can be realistic in one layer and deliberately game-like in another. Projectile behavior is different from weapon handling, and both are different from the way a squad communicates or clears a building. Use these seven questions to decide which simulation matters to you:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Projectile and penetration modeling: Do bullets follow a physical trajectory, and can they penetrate walls, furniture or bodies?
- Weapon handling: Does the muzzle, rather than the center of the screen, determine where a shot goes? Do optics, reloads and attachments behave plausibly?
- Lethality: How many hits normally end a fight, and does armor or hit location change that result?
- Movement and suppression: Do stamina, incoming fire and carrying a weapon affect aim and visibility?
- Audio and information: Can you identify direction, distance, room acoustics, footsteps or weapon types from sound?
- Tactical scale: Are you solving a room, a patrol or a battlefield with vehicles and a chain of command?
- Stability and access model: Is the game a mature release, or can an update change its ballistics and movement?
There is no universal winner because each title chooses a different answer to those questions.

Arma Reforger: the strongest military-simulation answer
Choose Arma Reforger when your definition of realism starts with a battlefield rather than a doorway. Bohemia Interactive describes it as an authentic Cold War military sandbox with highly realistic weapons and gameplay systems. Its documented feature set includes detailed ballistics, map-and-compass navigation, recreated Cold War weapons and vehicles, multiplayer, co-op, single-player and extensive mod support.
Why its gunplay feels simulation-first
Detailed ballistics make projectile behavior part of planning instead of a cosmetic effect. Map-and-compass navigation removes the assumption that every objective is marked by a floating interface icon, so range, bearing and terrain become relevant to a shot. Vehicles and a broad Cold War arsenal place each engagement inside a larger military context.
Where the recommendation has limits
“Most realistic” here is an editorial judgment from the systems the official listing documents, not a measured real-world firearms test. The sandbox and mod ecosystem also mean that scenarios can vary considerably. If you want tightly authored room-clearing procedures or instant, repeatable infantry matches, another game may better fit your definition.

Squad is the better choice when realism means functioning as one unit in a large battle. Its official description says it bridges the gap between an arcade shooter and military realism. Matches support 100 players, organized as 50-versus-50 teams, with infantry, vehicles, base building and faction-specific weapons.

What makes the weapons credible
Realistic faction-specific weapons give each side a distinct equipment identity, while Picture-in-Picture scopes reproduce the way a magnified optic occupies only the scope’s view rather than enlarging the entire screen. Those details matter, but the defining realism is contextual: a rifleman’s decision is shaped by squad communication, support weapons, vehicles and objectives spread across a large map.
Who should pick Squad
Select Squad if you want a coordinated 50-versus-50 battle in which information and logistics are as important as recoil control. It is less suited to someone seeking a solitary ballistics laboratory or a short, self-contained breach. The weapon model supports the team game; it does not replace it.
Ready or Not: the realistic room-clearing specialist
Ready or Not is a modern SWAT shooter released on December 13, 2023. Its realism is procedural: you equip real-world weapons and gear, select a squad, breach spaces methodically and follow rules of engagement while trying to keep officers and hostages alive.

Penetration changes every shot
The game’s description says bullets from known and concealed threats react realistically with the environment and can pass through walls, furniture and bodies. That means cover is a material question, not a universal safe zone. A suspect behind a door, a teammate in a hallway and a hostage near the target all affect the risk of firing.

Why it is not a battlefield simulator
Its focus is tactical interior work rather than combined-arms warfare. Squad selection, breaching choices and the consequences of squadmate or hostage deaths create pressure that is closer to a police operation than a military sandbox. If your question is “Is Ready or Not realistic?”, the precise answer is yes for room-clearing procedure and environmental threat management, not as a complete model of infantry combat.
Insurgency: Sandstorm: the most immediate lethal gunfight
Insurgency: Sandstorm is the clearest pick when you want realistic handling to be felt in every second of a fast infantry engagement. A developer feature published by Xbox Wire on September 13, 2021 explains the systems behind that intensity.
Muzzle aim, optics and reloads
The muzzle—not the center of the screen—determines bullet direction. If the weapon is offset or the muzzle is blocked, your shot does not magically travel through the crosshair. Scopes magnify only the scope portion of the view, and the weapon and attachment models in the Xbox Wire feature published on September 13, 2021 reflect their real counterparts. Reloading also retains unfinished magazines instead of treating every reload as an abstract full refill.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Stamina, suppression and lethality
As stamina falls, weapon sway increases. Incoming suppression increases sway and obscures vision, so staying exposed can degrade your ability to return fire even before you are hit. The developer describes the time to kill as very low: one or two shots is usually all it takes. That combination rewards controlled movement, short exposures and accurate first shots rather than prolonged bullet sponges.

Audio is part of aiming
Sound communicates footsteps by material and floor, weapon types, whether gunfire is indoors or outdoors and the direction of the shot. A gaming headset with positional audio can therefore reveal information the visual interface does not provide. This is not a claim that any particular headset was tested; it is a direct consequence of the audio cues the developers describe.
Match variety
Focus Entertainment lists four PvP modes, three PvE modes and 14 maps. That gives the gunplay a faster match structure than a persistent military sandbox while still offering different objectives and combat spaces.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Gray Zone Warfare: promising systems with an Early Access warning
Gray Zone Warfare is an open-world, PvE-first extraction shooter released on April 30, 2024. Its appeal is the combination of exploration, missions and a large weapon-customization space: the current update listing describes more than 380 weapon parts.
Why its realism is version-sensitive
The game remains in Early Access, and its Steam listing warns that the product is incomplete and may change. Recent update notes specifically mention rebalanced ballistics, core movement, sound design and health. A recoil or penetration impression from one build may therefore be obsolete after a later patch.

Who should play it
Choose Gray Zone Warfare if you want PvE-first extraction tension and are comfortable adapting to a moving target. Do not choose it solely because you want a settled benchmark for realistic ballistics; its core systems are still being tuned.
Which tactical shooter has the best realistic ballistics?
For a military-simulation interpretation, Arma Reforger has the strongest documented case because its official description explicitly combines detailed ballistics, highly realistic weapons and map-and-compass navigation. Ready or Not is the more relevant answer for penetration inside buildings, where walls, furniture and bodies can all affect a bullet. Insurgency: Sandstorm makes lethality and muzzle alignment more immediately visible, but its strength is the complete handling model rather than a claim to be a laboratory ballistic simulator. Gray Zone Warfare should be judged only against a stated build because its ballistics are being rebalanced.
Is Arma more realistic than Squad?
Arma Reforger is more simulation-oriented in the narrow sense of weapon systems, ballistics, navigation and a broad military sandbox. Squad is more realistic when the desired experience is a 50-versus-50 force operating through communication, combined arms and faction-specific equipment. The choice is therefore about emphasis: Arma for systems and sandbox depth; Squad for organized battlefield teamwork.
How to choose by the experience you want
- Pick Arma Reforger if you want Cold War weapons, vehicles, detailed ballistics, navigation and mod-enabled sandbox play.
- Pick Squad if you want 100-player, 50-versus-50 battles where communication and combined arms define success.
- Pick Ready or Not if your priority is realistic room clearing, penetration through interior materials and strict rules of engagement.
- Pick Insurgency: Sandstorm if you want the fastest feedback from muzzle aim, stamina, suppression, directional sound and one-or-two-shot kills.
- Pick Gray Zone Warfare if an open-world PvE extraction structure matters more than a stable, finished ballistics model.
Practical habits that make realistic gunplay work
- Use cover selectively: In Ready or Not, assume walls and furniture may not stop a round; in other games, verify what the specific system models rather than trusting visual thickness.
- Control exposure: Insurgency’s low lethality and suppression punish standing in the open, while stamina loss makes repeated sprinting harm your aim.
- Read the environment: Directional audio and indoor-versus-outdoor reports can reveal an opponent before a visual contact.
- Coordinate before firing: Squad and Arma reward shared bearings, roles and support more than isolated marksmanship.
- Check the build: Gray Zone Warfare players should read current update notes before comparing movement, health or ballistics with older videos.
Final verdict
There is no single most realistic tactical shooter across every dimension. Arma Reforger is the clearest overall military-simulation recommendation. Squad is the large-scale teamwork alternative. Ready or Not is the specialist for procedural SWAT clearing and penetration. Insurgency: Sandstorm delivers the most immediate, lethal infantry handling, with sound and suppression treated as core mechanics. Gray Zone Warfare is the evolving open-world option, but Early Access updates make any realism verdict temporary.
