For the cleanest listed exposure to advanced chips, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is generally the stronger choice. Its dedicated-foundry model, leading-edge manufacturing scale and direct connection to AI-accelerator demand make the investment case easier to isolate. Samsung Electronics is the broader, more diversified option: it combines memory, foundry, logic and consumer businesses, which can add upside during strong memory cycles and cushion a semiconductor downturn, but also makes results more cyclical and execution harder to assess. Your final choice should incorporate live valuation, currency, tax, market-access and geopolitical considerations.

TSMC or Samsung: the short answer

TSMC is usually the better fit if “chip exposure” means owning the companies that manufacture leading-edge logic for other chip designers. It does not design, manufacture or market semiconductor products under its own name, so it does not compete with its customers. That pure-play structure ties its economics closely to outsourcing, advanced nodes and packaging used in AI accelerators, smartphone processors and high-performance computing.

Samsung Electronics is a different type of holding. Its Device Solutions division includes Memory, Foundry and System LSI, while the company also sells phones, displays, appliances and network equipment. That breadth gives shareholders exposure to DRAM, HBM, NAND, logic manufacturing and electronics demand at the same time. It also means that a Samsung share is not a pure semiconductor position.

Neither stock is universally superior. TSMC concentrates technology, capacity and geopolitical risk in one manufacturing franchise. Samsung spreads risk across businesses but adds memory-price cycles and more varied execution. The right answer depends on whether you value exposure purity or diversification.

What each company actually owns

TSMC: a dedicated foundry

TSMC manufactures chips designed by customers rather than selling chips under a TSMC product brand. Its 2025 annual report records 12,682 products made with 305 technologies for 534 customers. That customer breadth lets TSMC participate in several end markets without betting on one chip designer’s product roadmap.

The model is capital intensive: TSMC managed more than 17 million 12-inch-equivalent wafers of annual capacity in 2025. Its competitive proposition is the combination of process technology, yield learning, manufacturing scale and advanced packaging. For an investor, revenue is therefore linked to customers’ willingness to outsource increasingly complex chips and to pay for leading-edge capacity.

TSMC shares trade on Taiwan as ticker 2330 and in the United States as NYSE American depositary shares under ticker TSM. The two listings represent the same underlying company but can differ in trading hours, liquidity, currency exposure, fees and tax treatment.

Samsung Electronics: semiconductors plus devices

Samsung’s Device Solutions organization spans Memory, Foundry and System LSI. The company describes this as a “one stop solution” that also includes advanced packaging. Its memory business gives it direct exposure to DRAM, HBM and NAND pricing and demand; Foundry and System LSI add logic manufacturing and chip design capabilities.

Outside semiconductors, Samsung sells mobile devices, displays, appliances and network products. Those operations can support consolidated earnings when one chip segment is weak, but they dilute the sensitivity of the stock to foundry growth. A rise in Samsung’s share price cannot automatically be attributed to advanced-logic demand because memory, phones, displays, foreign exchange and consumer spending may be larger drivers at a given time.

2025 operating evidence—and why the figures are not like-for-like

The latest full-year figures show strong scale at both companies, but they measure different businesses and use different reporting currencies.

Measure TSMC Samsung Electronics How to interpret it
2025 revenue Up 35.9% year over year in U.S.-dollar terms; record revenue KRW333.6 trillion TSMC’s percentage growth reflects a foundry-focused company; Samsung’s won figure consolidates memory, devices and other operations.
2025 operating profit Record EPS was reported; an operating-profit figure is not stated here KRW43.6 trillion Do not compare the amounts without aligning accounting scope, currency and segment mix.
Manufacturing scale More than 17 million 12-inch-equivalent wafers of annual capacity Capacity figure not stated here TSMC’s number describes foundry manufacturing scale rather than total semiconductor output across all product types.
R&D investment Not stated here KRW37.7 trillion in 2025 Samsung’s figure covers the diversified group and should not be read as foundry-only spending.
Customer/product breadth 12,682 products, 305 technologies and 534 customers in 2025 One-stop logic, memory, foundry and packaging offering TSMC’s disclosures quantify customer and process breadth; Samsung emphasizes an integrated portfolio.

TSMC also estimated worldwide semiconductor revenue excluding memory at US$611 billion in 2025, up 19% from 2024. That market estimate is supplied by TSMC and is not the company’s own revenue. Samsung’s 2025 revenue and profit are reported in Korean won, so exchange rates matter when an investor compares them with TSMC’s U.S.-dollar growth.

Which stock gives purer AI exposure?

TSMC offers the more direct connection to AI infrastructure. AI accelerators and related processors are designed by customers and manufactured at advanced logic nodes; TSMC earns from the manufacturing and packaging demand regardless of which customer’s branded accelerator wins. Its scale and customer breadth reduce dependence on a single chip designer, although they do not eliminate concentration in a small number of very large customers or in advanced-node capacity.

Advanced packaging is part of this exposure. Modern AI systems often require high-bandwidth memory integration and unusually large or complex packages. TSMC’s foundry and packaging capabilities therefore participate in more than the transistor wafer itself.

Samsung can benefit from the same AI buildout through several channels. Its Memory business can supply DRAM and HBM, while Foundry and System LSI pursue logic opportunities. Samsung’s 4Q 2025 presentation says it began mass production of first-generation 2nm products and initial shipments of 4nm HBM base dies. Its 2026 foundry objective is double-digit revenue growth and improved profitability while ramping second-generation 2nm.

That creates potentially greater upside if memory pricing and HBM demand accelerate, but it also introduces more variables. A Samsung investor must judge HBM qualification and production execution, memory supply-demand conditions, foundry yields and the performance of non-chip divisions. For a single-theme AI allocation, TSMC is easier to analyze; for an AI-plus-memory-and-devices portfolio, Samsung is broader.

Foundry strength: how to compare the two

TSMC’s advantages

  • Dedicated customer model: TSMC does not sell competing branded chips, reducing channel conflict with chip designers.
  • Leading-edge concentration: A large share of the investment case is tied to advanced logic and packaging rather than mature consumer products.
  • Scale and learning: More than 17 million 12-inch-equivalent wafers of annual capacity and thousands of products support process learning and utilization.
  • Customer diversity: 534 customers and 12,682 products in 2025 spread demand across applications, even though the largest customers still matter disproportionately.

Samsung’s foundry opportunity

  • Integrated offering: Samsung can combine logic, memory and advanced packaging in a single supplier relationship.
  • 2nm ramp: First-generation 2nm mass production began in 2025, with second-generation 2nm ramping as part of the 2026 objective.
  • HBM adjacency: Initial shipments of 4nm HBM base dies connect the foundry roadmap to the memory stack used in AI systems.
  • Turnaround potential: If yields, customer qualification and utilization improve, foundry profitability could grow faster from a lower base.

The key distinction is maturity versus optionality. TSMC’s foundry is the established core of the company. Samsung’s foundry offers a potentially valuable second source and integrated stack, but its investment outcome depends more heavily on successful ramps and customer wins.

Memory cycles and diversification

Samsung’s memory exposure is the main reason an investor might prefer it over TSMC. DRAM, HBM and NAND prices can rise sharply when demand outpaces supply, producing earnings leverage that a pure foundry does not receive in the same way. AI servers increase demand for HBM and conventional server memory, while smartphones and PCs influence broader memory consumption.

The same leverage works in reverse. When memory supply exceeds demand, prices and margins can fall quickly. Samsung’s consolidated results can therefore swing more with the memory cycle than TSMC’s foundry results.

Samsung’s phone, display, appliance and network businesses provide additional diversification. They can cushion a semiconductor downturn, but they bring their own exposure to consumer demand, competition and foreign exchange. Diversification lowers dependence on one business while making the stock less precise for an investor who wants only chip manufacturing.

Company Reported 2025 dividend information What is and is not comparable
TSMC NT$18.0 per share in total cash dividends, compared with NT$14.0 in 2024 TSMC says it has never reduced dividend per share since beginning cash dividends in 2004. The amount is in New Taiwan dollars and applies to the local share basis.
Samsung Electronics KRW1,668 per common share in total annual dividends; KRW11.1079 trillion total payout and a 25.1% payout ratio The figures are in Korean won and refer to Samsung’s common-share reporting. They do not state the yield for an investor buying at today’s price.

TSMC’s uninterrupted per-share history may appeal to income-focused investors, while Samsung’s payout ratio provides a disclosed measure of distributions relative to earnings. Neither statistic proves that future dividends will rise. Risk comparison

TSMC risks

  • Geopolitical concentration: Manufacturing is concentrated in Taiwan, so cross-strait tensions, trade restrictions or disruptions could affect production, logistics and valuation.
  • Capacity and technology execution: Advanced-node transitions require large capital commitments, high yields and timely customer ramps. Delays or weak utilization would pressure returns.
  • Customer concentration: TSMC has many customers, but the largest AI and smartphone customers can still have an outsized effect on demand.
  • Valuation sensitivity: The market may price in years of AI growth. A strong business can still produce a poor return if purchased at an excessive multiple.

Samsung risks

  • Memory cyclicality: DRAM, HBM and NAND prices can change rapidly as supply and demand move out of balance.
  • Foundry ramp execution: Second-generation 2nm progress, yields, customer qualification and profitability are central to the 2026 objective.
  • HBM execution: Initial 4nm HBM base-die shipments are a milestone, but sustained demand depends on qualification, volume and competitive performance.
  • Business-mix dilution: Phones, displays, appliances and networks can offset semiconductor weakness or obscure it, depending on the quarter.
  • Macro and policy exposure: Samsung’s 2025 report highlights trade-policy, foreign-exchange, macroeconomic and technology uncertainty.

How valuation changes the answer

The operating comparison does not identify which stock will deliver the higher return at a particular price. A disciplined decision requires refreshing valuation immediately before purchase because share prices, exchange rates, earnings estimates and risk premiums change.

  1. Use comparable measures: Compare forward and trailing earnings, free-cash-flow yield, enterprise value and return on invested capital using the same currency convention.
  2. Separate segments: For Samsung, estimate the value and earnings contribution of Memory, Foundry, System LSI and non-chip businesses instead of applying a pure-foundry multiple to the whole group.
  3. Stress the cycle: Test Samsung under lower memory prices and TSMC under weaker advanced-node utilization. A valuation that works only at peak margins is fragile.
  4. Check growth assumptions: Identify how much of the price depends on AI accelerator demand, 2nm adoption, HBM growth or packaging expansion.
  5. Account for ownership frictions: Include listing currency, brokerage access, depositary-share fees where applicable, taxes, dividend withholding and foreign-exchange movements.

When TSMC trades at a premium that already discounts flawless execution, Samsung’s diversified assets and memory optionality may offer better risk-adjusted value. When Samsung’s memory cycle is priced for peak conditions or its foundry turnaround requires optimistic assumptions, TSMC’s more focused business may justify a higher multiple. The numbers must be checked with current market data; the 2025 operating figures alone cannot settle that question.

Choosing by investor objective

Choose TSMC if you want

  • The most concentrated listed exposure to advanced foundry manufacturing.
  • A direct financial link to customer-designed AI accelerators, high-performance computing and advanced packaging.
  • Less dependence on consumer-device sales and memory-price swings.
  • A business model that avoids competing with its own chip-design customers.

Choose Samsung Electronics if you want

  • A diversified semiconductor-and-electronics holding rather than a pure foundry.
  • Meaningful exposure to DRAM, HBM and NAND cycles alongside logic and foundry.
  • Potential upside from successful first- and second-generation 2nm ramps.
  • Non-chip businesses that may cushion a semiconductor downturn.

Consider owning both when the objective is balance

An investor who can tolerate two different risk profiles may combine the companies: TSMC for advanced-logic and foundry concentration, Samsung for memory-cycle and integrated-device exposure. That is not a risk-free hedge. Both remain exposed to Asian manufacturing, semiconductor demand, trade policy and global technology cycles, and their weights should reflect the portfolio’s existing currency and regional exposure.

A practical pre-purchase checklist

  • Confirm whether you are buying TSMC’s Taiwan-listed share or its NYSE depositary share, and understand the currency and fee differences.
  • Refresh both companies’ share prices, earnings estimates, valuation multiples and dividend yields on the day of the decision.
  • For TSMC, review advanced-node utilization, packaging demand, capital spending and geopolitical risk.
  • For Samsung, review DRAM/HBM/NAND pricing, inventory, foundry yields, 2nm customer qualification and the contribution of non-chip divisions.
  • Calculate after-tax dividend income using your country’s withholding rules rather than comparing NT$18.0 with KRW1,668 directly.
  • Set a position size that reflects the possibility of a semiconductor downturn, not only the AI-growth case.

Verdict

For most investors specifically seeking chip exposure, TSMC is the clearer default because its entire economic engine is advanced contract manufacturing and packaging for chip designers. Samsung Electronics is preferable when diversification, memory upside and a broader electronics franchise matter as much as foundry purity. The evidence supports that conditional preference—not a permanent winner—and current valuation, currency, tax and geopolitical checks should decide whether either stock is attractive today.
