Take-Two announced a $460 million agreement to acquire Gearbox in March 2024, and said Gearbox and 2K were already developing the next Borderlands. That game is Borderlands 4, which released on September 12, 2025. The announced deal value was to be paid entirely in newly issued Take-Two shares—not cash.
What did Take-Two agree to buy?
On March 27, 2024, Take-Two announced a definitive agreement to acquire The Gearbox Entertainment Company from Embracer Group for $460 million. Take-Two described the value on a debt-free, cash-free basis with normalized working capital; Embracer separately described the $460 million (SEK 4.9 billion) purchase price as subject to customary adjustments. The announced consideration consisted entirely of newly issued Take-Two common shares, so the figure was not a stated cash payment. The agreement was subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. (Take-Two; Embracer)

Which Gearbox assets were part of the transaction?
The deal covered Gearbox Software and the Borderlands and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands franchises, among other listed assets. Embracer’s announcement also identified Gearbox Montréal, Gearbox Studio Quebec, and Gearbox Software as divested assets. Gearbox was to operate as a studio within 2K, led by founder and CEO Randy Pitchford and his management team. (Take-Two; Embracer)
Not every company or publishing right associated with the Gearbox name transferred. Embracer said it retained Gearbox Publishing San Francisco, including publishing rights for Remnant and Hyper Light Breaker, as well as Cryptic Studios, Lost Boys Interactive, and Captured Dimensions. (Embracer)

What did the acquisition mean for Borderlands 4?
At the time of the March 2024 announcement, Take-Two said Gearbox and 2K were actively developing the next Borderlands installment. That project became Borderlands 4, which 2K says launched on September 12, 2025. It is no longer merely in development. (Take-Two; 2K)
2K’s official description sets the game on Kairos, introduces a new cast of Vault Hunters with Action Skills, skill trees, and dynamic movement abilities, and names the Timekeeper as the opposing force. That is the publisher’s description, not an independent assessment of the game. (2K)

Where can you play Borderlands 4?
2K lists Borderlands 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The official launch announcement likewise names those platforms. The reviewed official game page does not list a Nintendo Switch 2 version. (2K game page; 2K launch announcement)

Take-Two Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick called the acquisition a way to strengthen the company’s creative talent and owned intellectual property, including Borderlands. That was his stated rationale for the deal, not a guarantee about how future games would be made or received. (Take-Two)

In a June 16, 2025 preorder announcement, Gearbox founder and president Randy Pitchford described Borderlands 4 as “the best entry point for new players” and “a heartfelt love letter to fans of the original games.” Those are promotional remarks, not a neutral review verdict. (Take-Two)
