The improvements are practical rather than transformative: faster movement, destination markers, encounter controls and earlier Grade Shop access do not turn this 2016 RPG into a remake. A PS5 review by TechRadar’s Michael Murphy praised the story and combat, while noting rough textures and limited character customization.
What is Tales of Berseria Remastered?
Bandai Namco describes Tales of Berseria Remastered as a remastered version of the action RPG first released in 2016. Its story follows Velvet Crowe on a journey of vengeance connected to her brother’s murder, with the conflict framed around emotion and reason. In combat, players customize skills and take “souls” from enemies to extend combos. Bandai Namco’s launch announcement confirms the original game’s release year and the remaster’s premise.

This is a remaster, not a remake: the publisher’s listed changes focus on navigation, settings and gameplay adjustments. The available evidence does not establish a new story, new environments or a wholesale visual rebuild.
What changes in the remaster?
The most tangible upgrades are quality-of-life features intended to make exploration and repeat play smoother. Bandai Namco’s feature breakdown lists the following:
Recommended Free Tools
#1 Best Overall
- A Tale of Emotion Versus Reason - Follow the journey of Velvet as she embarks on a journey of vengeance towards the murderers of her brother, torn between the person she was and the path her rage has set before her. Can she hold onto who she was, or will vengeance consume all that remains?
- Exhilarating Battle System - Customize your skills to create unique playstyles and defeat your foes by unleashing a flurry of attacks. Engage in exhilarating battles by stealing “Souls” from your enemies to empower your combos.
- A Modern, High-Quality Retelling - Play with new quality-of-life updates, including destination icons, the ability to toggle encounters, early grade shop access, and more.
- An All-Around Experience - Enjoy the immersion with the DLC*, which was launched alongside the original release, including costumes, useful items, and other fun extras.
- Faster movement: Default movement speed is increased by 20%, and the change also applies to the Geoboard.
- Destination icons: Markers make it easier to locate objectives.
- Encounter controls: Players can toggle encounters.
- Earlier Grade Shop access: The shop is available from the beginning with 11,200 Grade.
- Additional adjustments: The publisher also describes navigation, saving and gameplay changes.
The Grade Shop offers a half-price shop-purchase option. However, level carryover cannot be purchased on the first playthrough, and some settings can only be changed when starting a game. These restrictions matter if you expect every option to be freely adjustable mid-run.
The launch announcement summarizes the additions as early Grade Shop access, destination icons and encounter toggling. The publisher describes the release as an enhanced remaster with optimized gameplay; it does not claim a complete visual overhaul.

- Realistic diorama style battle scenes - Richly detailed depictions of the environments of the island of DioField combined with unique "diorama" style visuals as you command your forces like a general
Does it include all the original DLC?
No. Bandai Namco says many original DLC items are included, including costumes and bonus items, but explicitly excludes some content. Treat the DLC selection as a collection of included extras, not the complete original add-on library.
Is Berseria Remastered worth playing?
The case for returning is strongest if Velvet’s story and the combat are what you remember most—or if you missed the 2016 release and want to play it on a current platform. Navigation markers, faster movement and encounter controls address everyday friction, while the story and combat remain the principal draw.

- ATLUS' newest fantasy JRPG with beautiful anime cutscenes
- Free demo with save-data carry over
- Awaken 40+ "Archetypes," magical powers that lie dormant in your heart
- Innovative battle system that blends strategic turn-based combat and dynamic real-time combat
For a platform-specific outside perspective, TechRadar reviewer Michael Murphy’s PS5 review, published February 26, 2026, praises the revenge story, dynamic combat, map markers, autosave and quick save, and improved frame rate. Murphy reports playing about 40 hours, finishing the main story with some side content, and exploring islands and optional bosses. He also points to rough textures and limited character customization. Those are his observations from the PS5 version, not a comparison of every platform.
That mix makes this an easier recommendation for players who value the narrative and combat over modern visual polish or extensive character-build variety. If you already own the original and mainly want a visual remake, the documented changes may not meet that expectation.

This is the latest update information located here, not confirmation that no later patch exists; check your platform’s update status before playing.
At launch on February 27, 2026, Bandai Namco recommended applying the available update before playing. Its launch-day notice listed initial versions as Switch 1.0.3 and PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam 1.0.2. The notice gave approximate update file sizes of 90 GB for Switch, 1 GB for PS5 and 13 GB for Xbox Series X|S including the base game. These are launch-day figures, not current install-size guarantees; the notice also said an internet connection was required for the update.
Verdict
Tales of Berseria Remastered is a worthwhile return to a compelling revenge story and action RPG, made more convenient by targeted quality-of-life changes and current-platform availability. Its improvements do not make it a remake or erase the dated textures and customization limits noted in the PS5 review. If you want Velvet’s story with smoother navigation, it has a clear appeal; if you are looking for a substantial visual rebuild, temper your expectations.
